JUNIOR SAILING OPEN HOUSE SAVE THE DATE: June 25th On Thursday, June 25th at 6:00 PM Page McManus and her staff will hold an informational meeting where junior sailors and their parents will receive important details about the program, equipment information, ask questions and meet the instructors. This is a mandatory meeting for all parents to attend. This is our one opportunity to discuss important information about Jr. Sailing prior to the commencement of classes. It is an opportunity to meet your child’s instructor, learn about Opti drop off, hear about pick up and drop off of your child, what to do in the case of emergency, and/or how to contact your instructor during the day. Children are invited. We will meet at the Jr. Sailing “Hut” (next to the paddle courts). In the event of rain, the meeting will take place in the new Sailing Center (next door to the Galley Grill).

Session One will run from Monday, June 29, 2015 to Friday, July 24, 2015.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Daily Essentials The following items can be worn or stowed in a backpack; be sure to label everything well:  proper-fitting life jacket  sunglasses and/or hat  non-marking, skid-proof shoes (ex. Crocs, Tevas, water shoes)  sunscreen (apply before class)  water bottle  foul-weather gear  extra layers for wind or chill (ex. fleece, windbreaker, rash guard) Medical & Waiver forms—All sailors must have updated medical and waiver forms on file before the start of the program, which you will find on-line within the Policy & Rules section of the EYC Junior Sailing Web Page. Rain & Bad Weather—Classes will not be cancelled because of weather. In the case of bad sailing conditions, sailors will participate in off-water instruction and games/activities. We will sail in light rain so be sure to bring appropriate rain gear and a change of clothes. Safety—Safety first! Junior Sailing staff will err on the side of safety when making weather-related activity decisions. First aid kits are located in every Sonar, motorboat, and on the Opti Dock. Guests may not participate in regular classes for reasons of safety, skill expectations, and class flow. Please consider private or group lessons for guests. If your child has medical conditions, please be sure to alert and discuss protocols with The Program Director and your child’s instructors. Lifejackets are mandatory and must be worn at all times on the water. Swim Test --During the first week of each session sailors will be required to take and pass a swim test. The test is to ensure both comfort in the water and proper fitting of lifejackets. With lifejackets on, sailors will be asked to swim approximately 20 yards and tread water for one minute—while smiling, of course!

Optimist Information •

Junior Sailing Open House June 25th at 6:00PM at the “Jr. Sailing Hut” next to the paddle courts. If rains, will be inside the new Sailing Center (next to the Galley Grill).

Program sails off of the Opti Docks which are located at the back of the harbor near Riverhead Beach and the causeway.

Privately owned Optis must be on the Jr Sailing floats prior to the first day of class. Please note that EYC Junior Sailing cannot be held responsible for private Optis left on the EYC Floats. We do our best to police the floats but the harbor is a public place and we cannot watch the boats 24 hours a day.

Opti Drop Off is Friday, June/26th 9:00AM - 1:00PM. Boats and rigging can be dropped off on grass outside the Hut. Instructors with dollies will be on hand to assist in bringing boats down to the Pleon docks, launching and towing them to the Opti Dock. Optis can also be launched from Riverhead ramp.

Boats can also be dropped off after the Open House meeting on Thursday night and left on grass behind the Jr. Sailing Hut. Be sure to label your boat and all rigging with your child’s name and which class they are participating in so that we can identify your boat.

Be sure that all removable parts of your boat (rig, blades, etc.) are labeled with last name and sail number.

Attach a labeled bailer to your boat. Please check your parts inventory against the enclosed Opti description before your first class!

Space on the Opti Dock is extremely limited. When you are not registered for a sailing session, you need to find a place other than the Opti Dock to store your boat. Limited rack space is available in the EYC dry sail area – contact Dock Master Mike Smith for more info.

Please be aware that most Optis on the Opti Dock are privately owned. Several families have been generous enough to share their boats with others during class. Please do not use someone else’s boat outside of class, unless you have the owner’s permission.

Drop off and Pick up • Parents must “check out” their sailors at the Hut with the head instructor at the end of each day. •

Please be on time for drop off to allow the class to start on time and get to all the fun the staff has planned!

The sailing staff cannot be responsible for babysitting -- please pick up on time. The Hut will be unmanned during lunch hour. The time between morning and afternoon classes is reserved for instructors’ lunch, weather checks, and getting boats and lesson plans ready for the next class.

For the safety of your young children, the staff will not release your child to anyone other than you or a regular alternate without written permission. There will be a daily sign-out sheet at the Hut where you can note different arrangements.

Progress Reports At the end of each session, parents will receive a written progress report. Our staff is happy to answer quick curriculum or progress-related questions with parents at the end of class as well. Communications and Website Each week The Program Director will email the Junior Sailing community with recaps of the adventures of the past week and what the next week holds in store. Copies will be posted to the EYC website along with pictures, other communications and program updates. “Friday Fun Sail” Each Friday afternoon, the staff organizes an optional, first-come-first-serve sailing adventure which is open to all sailors. A sign up with details will be posted at the Hut. Past Friday Fun Sail adventures have included motor boating and/or sailing to Brown’s Island for the afternoon and sailing to The Landing and walking up to Coffey’s for ice cream! This is a fun event from 1:00 - 3:30 PM open to all junior sailors in that session. Cost is $15.00/sailor and will be separately billed. Float Parties There will be two Junior Sailing Float Parties, the latter of which will include the Awards Banquet. (The dates for the two float parties will be determined closer to the start of the season.) Details and sign up for help will be posted at The Hut. Families are welcome to motor under their own power or be shuttled out by the instructors to the Opti Dock and enjoy a beautiful evening of Opti sailing, potluck and fun. Pizza and juice/soda will be provided.

Private Lessons We encourage your children to develop their sailing skills and confidence with one-onone private lessons. Conducted on the weekends or evenings around your schedule, private lessons are the quickest way to hone their Opti sailing skills or develop confidence on the water with a group of friends in a Sonar with our fantastic staff. Lessons are also available to visiting nieces, nephews and friends. For more information, contact The Program Director. Adult Sailing Are your kids buzzing around in their Optis and you’re jealous of how much fun they’re having? Does your spouse go out racing and you wish you could join in the excitement? Well, this is your summer to learn to sail! Adult group and private sailing lessons are available all summer in the club Sonars or on your own boat. EYC Sailing Director Greg Wilkinson, wants to help you reach your goals and enjoy the breeze. Contact Greg with any questions through the club’s main number 781-631-1400.

Introductory class teaches basic boat handling skills for children 8+ with no prior dinghy sailing experience. The class will principally be taught with two junior sailors to a boat to maximize fun and confidence on the water.

Opti II

The class is designed for beginner, single-handed Opti sailors who have had an introduction to sailing through the Opti I class. The focus is on fun while building confidence and competence steering and maneuvering in their boat. Sailors can provide their own Opti or rent a club boat on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Opti III

The class is for those who are ready for longer harbor explorations and basic racing skills. Participants will have the opportunity to race in Marblehead Junior Race Week in the Opti Green Fleet. Sailors must have their own Optis.

Voyager Class (New offering) The class is being offered for children ages 10 – 12 and is intended for kids who love being on the water and want to continue to build their boating skills. The prerequisite for Voyager Class is that applicants must have completed Opti II class at EYC or at least oneyear at Pleon. There will be a limited number of slots available for this class in 2015.
