As it gets warmer, our thoughts turn to tasty barbecues, happy holidays and lazing in the sun; topping up our tan. We are all aware of the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV LIGHT) on our skin, so we rightly apply dollops of sun cream, especially with our children, to protect ourselves. Unfortunately, we are less aware of the effects of UV light on our eyes and the exposure that UV can lead to: early cataracts, skin cancer and macular degeneration. As eyecare professionals, we advise patients to consider UV filters, transition (change with light), lenses and sunglasses with UV block. This protection becomes more important with children and older patients. Sunglasses can now be made by using your spectacle prescription. We are always pleased to give advice on any vision problems and how best to look after your eyes at no obligation. Come in and say hello or contact us on the numbers below.

EDS Support Group ~ Whetstone Pastures Farm hosts a knitting group every ursday 7-30 – 9 30pm called Knit pickers. Not many know of the group which welcomes all ages and abilities. ey charge £2 for tea/coffee and cakes but that goes to support EDS which is what my daughter suffers from. eDs or ehlers Danlos syndrome is a genetic disorder linked to weak collagen and collagen is everywhere in the body! e most obvious sign of the disease is lax ligaments and very hyper mobile joints which are oen dislocated and very stretchy skin. Widespread chronic pain, gastric problems, resistance to local anaesthetics and pain killers are also experienced. it takes a long time for many sufferers to get diagnosed and when they are, there are few medics who know enough about it. my daughter Lucy was diagnosed at 17 when i knew no one else with this condition. anks to eDs support UK there are now local groups around the country to give support and the Leicestershire one is held at my farm Whetstone Pastures Farm, quarterly. We have adults and children who find it great help meeting with others with the same condition and we will be hosting the Family Fun Day in OUR VETS CARE FOR YOUR PETS 24/7 may eDs support UK - more of that nearer the time. Please contact me Sandra Herbert for more information on 0116 277 4627 and www.ehlers-danlos.org Daffodil Sunday

The glorious carpets of daffodils can be enjoyed as you take the woodland & lakeside walks in the grounds that were designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. There will be hotdogs, locally made ice cream, teas and refreshments. Enjoy music from the Dunchurch Band and the Ocho Rios Steel Band. See exhibitions of Wood Turning and Bee Keeping. Revisit days gone by looking at the display of old tractors, cars and motorcycles, including military vehicles and the Leicester MG Car Club. Let the children try the slide and relive days at the seaside by having a donkey ride. Have a go at pottery, try out the Bungee Trampoline or visit the many stalls and exhibitions. Following our earlier REPORT on Lutterworth First Responders Mr B Singh makes a substantial donation to Mrs J Freeman one of the Lutterworth Area First Responders. The First Responders do a magnificent job in the Lutterworth Area. Acting under the authority of a ‘999’ call, under an emergency life and death issue where action is needed as soon as possible. The Lutterworth area is not only looking for further volunteer First Responders but also donations for updating and increasing the number of Defibrillators. To celebrate the opening and success of the New Waves Fish and Chip Bar in Linden Drive, Greenacres, Mr B Singh has made a donation to the First Responders via The Lutterworth Rotary Club after a wonderful talk given by Jeanne Freeman on the dedicated voluntary work given by the First Responders. Cedric Carnall 1928 – 2015 Cedric joined the staff of Lutterworth Grammar School in 1954 as a music teacher and during the next 36 years saw the school through many changes. However, one thing remained constant and that was his ability to generate enthusiasm for music in unlikely people and places. he was a very talented musician but his greatest love was his four part choir that became widely known, won festivals and appeared on national television in a Christmas broadcast. he also built an orchestra, a military band, musically directed a wide variety of shows

including many Gilbert and sullivan operas and organised successful, regular exchanges with schools in munster, Germany. he was a ‘one off ’, a different sort of teacher, a zany personality who oozed music, he possessed an oeat sense of humour but behind it all lay an intelligent, well-read man, however it was music that drove him. he will be greatly missed by his wife Gill, his three children and seven grandchildren, but there are also countless people now singing, playing, enjoying or working in music because of him and this is a legacy to be very proud of. Lutterworth and Leicestershire music were indeed well blessed when he came our way. Colin Horner

Sir Frank Whittle School Two students from Sir Frank Whittle Studio School in Lutterworth are enjoying learning the ropes of the hospitality business on work placement at Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre as part of their studies. Amy Betteridge aged 17 and Maisie McMahon Marsden aged 16, both Year 12 students are currently studying BTEC Level 3 in Business alongside their studies. Like all students at the Sir Frank Whittle Studio School, Maisie and Amy attend work placements every week alongside studies and have been experiencing first-hand what it’s like to be in the world of work through high quality work placements. Maisie explained, “Amy and I have been working both front of house and with the staff behind the scenes getting involved in all areas of hospitality. We have helped to seat guests in the dining room, serving drinks and afternoon teas. We have also helped with buffets for weddings and conferences”. Amy commented further, “It’s been great to meet so many different guests and to be able to make them feel relaxed and comfortable during their stay at Kilworth House Hotel and we have learned so much about the hospitality industry”.

The Lutterworth & District Journal

Alison Cant, Business Links Coordinator at Sir Frank Whittle Studio School explained, “Both Amy and Maisie are exploring their options for education and employment following their post 16 studies and the work placement at Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre gives them a real experience of the world of work to help them to make decisions about their futures”. Sir Frank Whittle Studio School opened its doors in September 2014 with a unique approach to education, helping students to combine high quality GCSE’s alongside highly valued BTEC qualifications. Its small school, big ambition philosophy is one that both Amy and Maisie stressed was one of the best things about their experience at the school. Amy commented, “Small class sizes suit me and having the independence to be able to organise events and the work placement has been fantastic”. Maisie agreed, “Small classes with lots of support when I need it is important and I feel like I get treated as an adult”. Although places at the school are filling up fast, the school is keen to hear from anyone who wants to find out more and school tours are available. Opticians Optical Oscar Edmonds & Slatter Opticians have recently received some fantastic news. They are finalists in the 2015 Opticians Awards. The Independent Opticians, with practices in Blaby, Glenfield and Lutterworth have been nominated in the category ‘Optical Assistant Team of the Year’. Partner Tim Cole said, “The category reflects the importance of the reception and support staff in our practices. You cannot run a successful practice with Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians alone. It shows outstanding teamwork, customer service and the ability to make all our patients feel welcome and cared for”.

Princess & the Pea

The Independent Opticians have been recognised by the prestigious awards ceremony previously in 2009 when Dispensing Optician Joanne Benfield was a runner-up in the category ‘Dispensing Optician of the Year’. The awards evening will take place in Birmingham on Saturday the 18th of April and almost the whole support staff team have been lucky enough to be able to attend. Fingers crossed for another great result!

Since we opened our two charity shops over 15 years ago, the support we have had from everyone has been tremendous and we hope you will continue to support us. All charity shops in the area are having problems with being able to recycle unsellable items and removing them to the refuse centres (tip). e tip, as you probably know, is now closed on tuesday and Wednesday and as a charity shop we are only allowed to make 2 tip runs a week. is presents us with a major logistical problem because we do not have the space to store the rubbish until it can be tipped. We are sorry if we offend anyone by turning away unsellable items; this is not our aim and we value your support to continue to raise the much needed funds. in the not too distant future the Lutterworth refuse centre (tip) will only be open saturday, sunday and monday and we the charity shops will have to pay to dispose all unsellable items. so we are asking you our loyal supporters to bear with us over the next few months until the Council makes it clear on how, what, when and where we can tip the unwanted and unsellable items. ere are over 100 types of blood cancers and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research works hard to find cures for them all. We will not stop until we have found the cures!!! We need funds not just for research but to help patients receive personal and targeted treatment for their needs. We want to help them to understand their disease and feel informed about their treatment options, to be able to play an active role in their recovery. it is essential to feel that there is support at every step they take. to enable us to achieve this we constantly need to raise funds, be it through our two charity shops or raising money through sponsored events like bike rides, running, sky dives etc. e Lutterworth Branch can help and support you with sponsor forms, so please pop in the shop for more information. Both Lutterworth Rotary Clubs entered candidates in the young Chef competition District Final North on Saturday 7th February. At short notice the venue was changed from the samworth Academy Leicester to Lutterworth College’s Food technology Deptartment. e event ran very smoothly nonetheless, organised by moira Bartlett the District organiser, with help from members of the Wycliffe Club and Dorothy Greaves liaising with the College staff and the competing students. each of the 16 students produced a three course meal for two people. ellie-mae Burke (pictured right) served chicken kebabs with mango salsa preceded by smoked salmon pots and followed with raspberry and kiwi tarts. e judges were impressed by the high standard of achievement but neither of the Lutterworth entrants gained a winning place. e first place went to the student entered by towcester Rotary Club who will proceed to the regional final at Grimsby.

2. With the tip of a sharp knife, make shallow scores through the outer layer of skin and fat of the lamb shoulder, but not into the meat, cross hatching the entire surface. 3. Mix the dried camomile, thyme, rosemary, sage and oregano together in a bowl. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Press a handful of the herb mixture into the skin of the lamb, massaging it in well all over the flesh of the lamb. 5. Sprinkle some of the herb mixture across the bottom of a casserole with a lid. Place the lamb into the casserole, then squeeze the lemon juice over the top, before sprinkling with any remaining herb mix. 6. Drizzle the honey over the top of the lamb and pour over a little olive oil. 7. Pour the water into the casserole, then put the lid on. Transfer to the oven and cook for 2½ hours. Check the dish after one hour - the lamb should be taking on a little colour. If the water has evaporated, add a little more to maintain the dish's moisture. 8. After the 2½ hours cooking, the lamb meat should pull away easily from the bone. 9. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 4-5 minutes. 10. To serve, using a knife and fork, pull large pieces of meat away from the bone and arrange on a large serving place. Drizzle the meat with any pan juices and allow guests to help themselves.

Ramble On... Lutterworth Ramblers have just finalised their programme of walks for the spring - so let’s hope the weather is kind to us. on 22nd march we travel to Warwickshire for a 6 ½ mile walk around newbold on Avon; a walk with varied terrain including going through the ‘newbold tunnel’. We end the month with a 7 ½ mile walk in Kenilworth on 29th march. starting and finishing at Kenilworth Castle, as well as views of the castle on the walk, there is the opportunity to visit the castle aer the walk. Whilst the walk is through a rural landscape there is a reminder of the proximity of Coventry and less peaceful times with the remains of a large anti aircra battery installed rather belatedly aer the destruction of Coventry in 1941. For the above walks, we meet at the town hall car park in Lutterworth at 9.30am and share lis where possible. moving into April, there is no walk on 5th

We meet at the Recreation Ground, Coventry Road, Lutterworth car park at 1.30pm. e walk on sunday April 19th is a 9am start as we go further afield to Derbyshire; a moderate walk of 11 miles in the edale valley. is is a spectacular walk with amazing scenery. starting from edale, the walk takes us to hollins Cross and along the ridge to Lose hill via Back tor before dropping down towards hope. We complete the circle back to edale via Crookstone Barns and, if we’re feeling energetic enough, Ringing Rogers. ere are lots of opportunities to admire the views with stops for coffee and lunch on the way. While this walk is ‘not flat,’ there are few stiles and it is to be enjoyed and not rushed. NEW OUTDOOR GYM EQUIPMENT

e town Estates Charity was set up many years ago to assist the sick and needy residents of Lutterworth. is year the town estates trustees decided it would be of benefit to a greater number of residents of the town to diversify and have provided outdoor gym equipment for the community. is equipment is sited on the Lutterworth Coventry Road Recreation Ground and can be used by all members of the public at no cost, creating a facility to encourage physical exercise to improve health and wellbeing. is scheme benefits the whole town and encourages people to live a healthier lifestyle. e equipment has been paid for from monies raised by the Charities’ trustees and the trustees hope that this enterprise will give years of pleasure and provide a means for the whole community to benefit from their local Charity. David Robinson in memory of a very much loved husband, father to ian and maxine and friend to many. David was born in London in 1946 and moved to Lutterworth 2 years later. he attended Lutterworth schools and served his apprenticeship in engineering at Alfred herbert machine tools. David was good at whatever he did, builder, plumber, mechanic, gardener, a fantastic cook, joker and entertainer. ere was never a dull moment in our house. he was a great ballroom dancer, i was the sack of potatoes! he enjoyed foreign holidays, swimming with stingrays in the Caribbean and fishing for piranha on the Amazon. he was the perfect travel guide and bag carrier! he was a keen angler and enjoyed track days on his bike at mallory. David always liked to end his day at the bottom of the garden with a pint and in the company of his girls (his chickens)! i would like to thank his many friends who all rallied round during his illness, their kindness was overwhelming. he will be greatly missed by his children, four grandchildren whom he loved to bits, his family and friends.
