Actor’s Youth Theatre The Addams Family THE SHOW: Book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa, based on the characters created by Charles Addams. Not much can scare Gomez Addams, head of America’s first family of eccentric ghouls who find rapture in the macabre. But fear does strike when an adult Wednesday tells her dad that she’s in love. In love with some perfectly nice, normal guy named Lucas Beineke. And guess who’s coming to dinner. When The Addams Family meets The Beineke Family, it’s a night to die for. And all the Addams ancestors will rise to the big occasion, from their graves, in this entertaining musical that includes great humor, songs, and storyline. THE PRODUCTION: Actor’s Youth Theatre was the first local production in the Phoenix area to stage this one, and they made sure it got off to a memorable start. Directors Marcus Ellsworth and Julie Clement got it all going with the pre-show, as several ancestors planted themselves in random seats, completely unresponsive to any audience members around them (which ended up generating a number of selfies by amused audience members – partly because they looked amazing thanks to makeup by Cheri Lundgreen, wigs, and costumes by Aurelie Flores). They are reanimated soon enough with the opening number, lumbering out of their seats to the stage featuring a cool cemetery (Nathan Turley on sets) and all of it illuminated by the marvelous lighting of Tom Fitzwater who masterfully helps set the mood throughout. The show also attracted an exceptionally talented cast. Jessie Jo Pauley is a dead ringer as Morticia Addams whose demeanor is both passionate and cool, using her voice and humor to perfect effect. Tim Eversole is her beloved Gomez, doing a nice job as the torn father/husband with a mixture of nervousness and macabre humor, and including a touching Happy/Sad number at seeing his daughter grow up and find love. Gomez and Morticia’s Tango de Amour is fantastic. Brittney Peters is a unique blend of darkness and charm as romance softens her sadistic tendencies, while Rhett Nyman is younger brother Pugsley who does so well as he grows fearful of the changes taking place in the family, but is somewhat soothed by a little torture from his older and the promise by his mother that there is, indeed, a monster under his bed. And then there is the consummate normal family who prove that everyone is weird if you get to know them a little. Emma Welch is a hoot as the mother Alice Beineke – a straight-laced poet reacting to the craziness around her, and who then accidentally get served a potion that brings out her inner id during the Full Disclosure dinner game. Jordan Andress nails the role of the Southern businessman who realizes he’s forgotten about romance. And Jonah Carlson is the fun and kind Lucas who knows the key to piercing Wednesday’s heart – using a bit of William Tell to prove he’s Crazier than You in a darkly endearing number between the two.

Actor’s Youth Theatre The Addams Family (cont.) There are also some great character roles including an amusing India Rose Chudnow as Grandma and Jared Kitch’s Lurch as the slow-moving and mostly silent butler who exudes personality with unique grunts and noises. Zack Diepstraten is brilliant as Fester with remarkable use of expressions and voice, romantically inclined toward the moon as we see in The Moon and Me that he ends with quite a high note. While rounding out the production is that eccentric and eclectic group of ancestors who add much to the show’s group numbers as well as personality and atmosphere in this mentally and visually appealing night with The Addams Family. East Valley Children’s Theatre Little Red Riding Hood THE SHOW: Book by Bradley G. Carter, Music by Kathie McMahon. This entertaining new musical adaptation of Grimm’s Little Red Riding Hood takes us to 1930s France where Little Red (aka Marie) wears a red beret, the flowers just off the path to Grandmother’s house can do the can-can, and a quartet of mimes may just save the day. Little Red/Marie is a favorite with the kids in the village as a lovable storyteller, but to Marie the stories are just flights of fancy. She’s far more intrigued by real things like Madame Curie and the discovery of Pluto and her talking parrot friend Jacques, dismissing fairy tales about dangerous wolves in the woods. But The Wolf is very real. And when Marie purchases some items to take to her ill grandmother, items that The Wolf had hoped to purchase himself (including lavender candles that help him to relax), he grows determined to get his revenge and those lavender candles. THE PRODUCTION: East Valley Children’s Theatre gives this new musical its world premiere. Director Karen Rolston’s production looks great with welcoming village shops (sets by Thomas Gilseth) and nice costumes by Kathy Most. And the show is perfectly paced and staged, setting the characters while capturing the humor and the tension and the fantasy. A terrific cast brings the modernized fantasy to the stage. As Little Red, Ashlyn Riggs is intelligent, charming with the young fans of her storytelling, and fearful as a monster from the fairy tales attacks. She also delivers some impressive period vocals with the jazzy Stay on the Path. Brian Robertson sinks his teeth into his role as The Wolf, enjoying being the bad guy as he gets frustrated with his shopping spree, intimidates some flowers, tries to separate Marie and a kindly woodsman, and breaks the fourth wall as his search for tasty little human morsels includes the front rows of the audience (which at this showing was concerning enough to make one young toddler in the front row cry). Tyler Briggs is a thoroughly likeable woodsman Jean Claude with the soul of an artist, and Elizabeth Schaible is a fun, slapstick sidekick as Marie’s talking parrot friend Jacques who is none too pleased when the mimes make him a Jacques in an invisible box from which he cannot escape. Elsewhere, Emma Lovata is a hoot as a lively Grandma who makes The Wolf miserable, Landon Bowman shines as a melodramatic, la petite pirate, and Nikki Kamouzis is sweetly maternal as Marie’s mother. While the ensemble is deeply talented with friendly villagers, unfriendly woodsmen, excited village children, flowers that are at first lazily confident and then terrified, and mischievous mimes (Leonel Gallegos, Calvin Mugge, Bailey Mae Goins, and Jessica Hughes) who expertly and quietly go about their business of saving the village children from boredom and monsters. Fountain Hills Youth Theater Peter Pan and Wendy THE SHOW: Adaptation, Music and Lyrics by Julie Anna Ayers-Hackmann, story based on J. M. Barrie's novel “Peter and Wendy.” Somewhere there’s a land full of pirates and Indians and fairies and Lost Boys who never grow old. The land is Neverland, an island so small there is hardly any room between one adventure and another. Peter Pan leads his group of Lost Boys through the adventures and the battles against Captain Hook and his pirates. We catch a glimpse of Neverland through the eyes of the three Darling children as they fly from their home in London to join Peter in his latest adventures. This 1995 adaptation by Julie Anna Ayers-Hackmann isn’t the classic you’re likely to be familiar with, but it’s a pretty entertaining musical that offers some new angles on the iconic characters and features such songs as Night Lights, The Doodle Doo, and The Tick Tock Croc. It opens with Jane going to bed with her Uncle Michael’s old teddy bear and asking her mother Wendy for a bedtime story… THE PRODUCTION: Fountain Hills Youth Theater staged this one in their very intimate theatre space that doesn’t allow for flying, but does allow for plenty of creative staging by Director Ross Collins and his group. That includes having adult Wendy (Allison Brown) and her daughter Jane (Cara Richman), after starting off the show with the beginning of the bedtime story, watch in delight from the side of the stage as the bedtime story and reminiscing emerges on center stage. That’s where we get a charming introduction the Darlings in the form of The Darling Family and a Night Lights lullaby and waltz. The kids eager for adventure are Rebecca Steiner as Wendy, David Woods as John, and Connor Klein as Michael. Katie Male delivers the lovely, heartfelt lullaby as Mrs. Darling and a comical reaction to the possible adoption of all the Lost Boys (later also appearing as a very convincing pirate Starkey) and Nicholas Hambruch is the stuffy Mr. Darling who transforms hilariously into the villainous Captain Hook who vainly craves flattery, is oftirritated by his bumbling pirates (when really mad, he even rips out one of pirate Savoy Thompson’s yellow braids), and is still getting used to his hook as he keeps on nicking himself with it. That’s a hook he has courtesy of Peter Pan, in this show unusually played by a real boy with Sebastian Harris-Wylde who does a nice job trying to reunite with his Shadow (Elle Feinstein, who also shines as Tinker Bell). The Pan also does well leading his enthusiastic bunch of Lost Boys as they coax bedtime stories out of a delighted Wendy.

Fountain Hills Youth Theater Peter Pan and Wendy (cont.) Hunter DiGrazia squeezes a lot out of her smaller role as Tiger Lily, leading her athletic Indian Maids in Blood Brothers and having an amusing jealousy bout with Wendy over Peter Pan. While Emily Spets is a rip as Hook’s sidekick Smee with a nerdy laugh and voice, the duo leading a great crew of ditzy pirates. They all converge in a battle for Neverland that includes everything from Matrix-like combat and debilitating noogies. Studio 3 Seussical Photos by Nick Woodward-Shaw THE SHOW: Dr. Seuss’s zany thinks created a trove of books that inspired generations of children to learn to read, while also inspiring this fun and engaging musical by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Once On This Island). The story is based on Horton Hears a Who and Horton Hatches an Egg, intertwined with gazoogles of other Seuss books and characters, all as seen through the eyes of a young reader who gets named JoJo and our narrating Cat in the Hat who wears many hats throughout the show. It starts with Horton hearing voices, but are they real voices or does he just think he hears them? The lives of all the Whos down in Whoville depend on him believing in them and protecting them, as their precarious existence on a tiny speck of dust grows more precarious by the moment when the other animals of the Jungle of Nool decide Horton is nuts and that his precious speck has got to go. Will Horton risk everything to save these tiny people only he can hear and nobody can see? The loyalty of Horton and the imagination of a young daydreamer named JoJo may hold the key as the lives of the Whos hang in the balance, hovering just inches above a hot, steamy kettle of beezlenut oil. THE PRODUCTION: The Studio 3 group took us on one of the most inventive and memorable trips through the land of Dr. Seuss in a show that enchanted from beginning to end. Emma England and Marie South teamed up to both direct and choreograph the show, doing so with great insight and attention to detail. Their intimate Studio 3 space in Gilbert is transformed with some well-placed classical Seussical scenery pieces that include curtained holes from which characters can crawl in and out of (although the characters can also come in from behind the audience, as Faith Sterling a.k.a. The Grinch does to successfully sneak up behind and amusingly frighten an audience member). And all those characters draw us in to their world right from the top with a charismatic and wellchoreographed Oh the Thinks You Can Think. Guiding us along is thirteen-year-old Anna Iverson as the Cat in the Hat, using her voice to great effect including simulated underwater singing while coming up from behind the bathtub in McElligot’s Pool, playing the fake piano right past the keys, and with a fun and mischievous personality throughout. We see the world through young Jojo’s eyes, and remarkably talented fourth grader Olivia Woodward-Shaw provides those excited eyes brimming with wonder and imagination, into every moment of her journey through the new universe she’s dreamed up. A universe she shares with our hero, Savoy Thompson, as a loyal, sensitive, and entertaining Horton the Elephant. Such a nice guy that his neighbor Gertrude has completely fallen in love with him. Emily Woodward-Shaw is amazing in the role – a young Judy Garland with brilliant use of voice

Studio 3 Seussical (cont.) and a natural knack for comedy as she pivots between sweet and charming (including gaga eyes whenever Horton defends the whos at trial) and Exorcist-like as she craves the bigger tail in hopes of getting Horton’s attention. The cast is dynamite from top to bottom, including Katie Doty as the funny and vain Mayzie with terrific vocals, Angelina Cappellano knocking it out as the Sour Kangaroo with her voice and attitude, Kayla King as a happy-go-lucky Pillberry Bush who grows increasingly uncomfortable by an obsessed Gertrude, some tough Wickersham Brothers (Belemi Thompson, Makalo Thompson, and Rebecca Webb), and the whimsical Bird Girls (Kaitlyn Brecker, Gillian Elliot, Kaleigh Feuerstein, and Megan Longton) narrating with style. While the ensemble of whos and jungle animals are each individually into it and their various personalities, impressing with their dancing, acting and singing from the big opening number to the inspiring closing.
