East Mooresville Intermediate School Mission Statement The mission of East Mooresville Intermediate School is to enable students to develop the skills necessary to become responsible global citizens, compete in the international marketplace, and become lifelong learners.

Belief Statements Education is a lifelong process. Every child can learn, be successful, and has value. Children have the right to learn in a safe and secure environment. A home/school community partnership is essential for student success. Strong, positive relationships enhance teaching and learning. Children learn respect for others and self by valuing individual differences. The success of our school depends on the commitment of all staff to high quality standards and performance. Varied instructional and assessment strategies enhance student learning and growth. Students learn best when they are actively engaged in the teachinglearning process. Technology is an essential tool for students to access and to demonstrate knowledge.
School Description East Mooresville Intermediate School (EMIS) is located at 1711 Landis Highway and serves approximately 625 students in grades four through six. When the school opened in 2005, it bordered a rural community and served several older neighborhoods and apartment complexes representing the lower income levels of the city. Significant growth has occurred in the area surrounding the school in the last five years, and it is now surrounded by large, upscale neighborhoods, resulting in a diverse socioeconomic student population. The school is comprised of 26 general education classrooms: 9 fourth grade classrooms, 8 fifth grade classrooms, and 9 sixth grade classrooms. Inclusion and pullout services are provided to approximately 70 students . Students identified as academic intellectually gifted, grades four through six, receive services in the classroom setting by AIG certified teachers. Enrichment/exploratory classes are provided to all students in the areas of music, art, physical education, health, and foreign language. In August 2009, each student at EMIS received a laptop computer. Since the deployment, teachers continue to use laptops as an instructional tool to integrate technology throughout the school day and to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in a global community. Each summer since 2010, teachers have participated in a summer staff development focusing on utilizing technology effectively in the classroom and to promote student engagement in learning in all content areas. Over the past year, the school has focused on PLC collaboration and aligning instruction throughout each grade level. Professional Learning Community groups meet weekly and discuss instructional strategies and student data. In addition, the staff has focused on developing school wide behavior and grading plans as well as a plan to increase relationship building with students. This year, to address specific instructional needs Language Arts and Math teachers will take their students to the media center for standards based station work planned by the PLC and media center specialist. Math teachers will do the same by taking students to the STEM lab and working on standards based manipulative stations each month with the technology facilitator.

Needs Assessment Strengths: 4th ELA proficiency increased from 51.5% to 63.8% (+12.3%). 5th ELA proficiency increased from 44.5% to 68.2% (+23.7%). 6th ELA proficiency increased from 61% to 68.5% (+7.5%). 4th Math proficiency increased from 67.4% to 68.4% (+1%). 5th Math proficiency increased from 58.3% to 72.0% (+13.7%). 6th Math proficiency increased from 60.6% to 67.6% (+7.0%). 5th Science proficiency increased from 49.8% to 80.1% (+30.3%). 5th Reading, Math, and Science moved from “does not meet” to “met growth” as measured by EVAAS. 6th Reading and Math met “high growth” on as measured by EVAAS. Needs (Areas for Improvement): Concern that 4th Math proficiency increase did not match the rest of the school (only 1% improvement). 4th grade ELA and Math did not meet growth as measured by EVAAS. 173 discipline incidents were reported during the 201314 school year.
