Matthew Flinders Anglican College has grown from an original enrolment of 161 students in 1990 to become one of Queensland’s larger schools with approximately 1300 students. The College provides a Prep through to Year 12 education and runs an Early Learning Centre for children from 3 years. The Flinders Early Learning Centre opened in 2007, catering for children from 3-6 years old. The Centre consists of a 48 week licensed long day Child Care Centre, delivering PreKindergarten and Kindergarten educational programs. Learning and Programs at the Centre are inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy of viewing children as capable, creative thinkers and learners. The FELC team are committed to creating a special place for children, one where children will learn about the world using reasoning, imagining, exploring. They discover the joys of learning through observing, listening, experimenting and sharing.

Early Childhood Educator Assistant PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: The Early Childhood Educator Assistant provides care and early learning experiences that meet the needs and interest of children in a safe, supervised environment. They support and implement the programs developed by the Teacher/ Director to encourage children to develop a love of learning, guiding them into the more formal processes of learning in a secure, nurturing and stimulating environment. The Early Childhood Educator Assistant creates an environment specifically designed to encourage children to develop their physical, emotional, intellectual, social, cultural and spiritual potential. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: No staff report directly to the Early Childhood Educator Assistant. ROLE OF THE POSITION: • The Early Childhood Educator Assistant supports the Teacher. Together they are responsible for their assigned group of children. • The Early Childhood Educator Assistant is responsible to the Director, FELC and reports to the Teacher. • The Early Childhood Educator Assistant cares for, nurtures, and educates children in their group with guidance from the Teacher and Director, FELC. • The Early Childhood Educator Assistant cares for and enhances the early learning and play environments. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Possess a genuine love of caring for young children and an appreciation of the service goals and philosophy of the Centre. 2. High level computer literacy, preferably within an Apple environment. 3. Experience working in centre based care for children aged 3 – 6 years, including knowledge and skills in programming/planning, observation cycles, and implementing and reflecting upon the early learning EYLF/ KQLG program. 4. Certificate III in Children’s Services and a demonstrated understanding of the National Quality Framework. 5. Educators will be encouraged to apply for Certified Supervisor’s Certificate. 6. Sound written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with staff, parents, and children. 7. Proven ability to work as a team player. 8. Possess an understanding of the ethos and ideals of an Independent College Education. 9. Hold a current First-aid Certificate and Suitability Card (Blue Card). Early Childhood Educator Assistant FA 2 TECHNICAL SKILLS & APPLICATION Demonstrated knowledge and application of the skills required for this position. This includes knowledge and understanding of appropriate equipment, legislation, policies and procedures. Programming • Assists in the programming, planning, implementation, reflection, and evaluation of the daily, weekly, and monthly EYLF/QKLG programs in consultation with Teacher and Director. • Assists in planning, monitoring, and preparing the inside and outside environment, setting up interest areas and preparing and clearing away materials and supplies. • Utilises any individual skills and/or interests relevant to the early learning program, in consultation with other staff. • Interacts responsively with the children during indoor and outdoor experiences. • Supports the morning and afternoon program and afternoon transitions for the mixed age group. Children • Takes responsibility for the children when the Teacher is not present. • Ensures that children feel content and secure on parent’s departure and settle into the experiences or routines of the centre. • Encourages children to develop a sense of independence and responsibility at a level appropriate to their ability and maturity. • Treats each child with dignity and respect taking into account any cultural or socioeconomic or other differences. • In consultation with the Director, Group Leader, and Teacher, helps prepare portfolios, learning stories and observations, and implements the agreed supportive behaviour management strategies and techniques with consistency. • Models appropriate behaviour and language, using active listening with individual children; speak in a friendly, courteous manner encouraging children to extend their vocabulary, communication, and use of language. • Takes note of special interests, talents, strengths, and disabilities that affect the daily routine of individual children and incorporate these interests into the program and learning cycle. • Follows the routine of the room and ensures the needs of all children are met in an appropriate way. Understands the daily medication requirements and administers medication under the strictest of guidelines. Parents • Develops good rapport with parents, ensuring they are always made to feel welcome and active contributors to the program. • Consults with the Teacher and/or the Director before discussing with a parent any issues related to child development or behaviour. Respects the confidentiality of all information and maintain high levels of discretion at all times, both on and off duty. Never discuss anything about a child to another parent.

Early Childhood Educator Assistant   FA 3 PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Demonstrated experience and understanding of the need for continuation of both personal and professional development. • Actively participates in one’s own wellbeing of body, mind and soul, striving for overall happiness and prosperity whilst also encouraging others in our community to reach their wellbeing goals. • Continually develops both personally and professionally to meet the changing needs of the College, its community and the education sector in general. • Attends all mandatory training sessions provided by the College and is actively involved in other training and development as required. • Actively participates in the Performance Development and Review process as required. • Evaluates own performance to identify strengths and areas where professional growth can occur. FA 4 TEAMWORK & COMMUNICATION Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, being an active member of the College community in a way that is consistent with the vision, mission and values of the College. • Maintains regular communication with parents acknowledging their arrival, departure through informal greetings etc. • Encourages the effective use of the Daily Journal, Blog, and Communication Books. This will accommodate parents that are unable to communicate directly with the Teacher/Group Leader. • Attends all staff meetings/staff professional learning opportunities held monthly or when required. • Assists the Teacher, Group Leader or Director where appropriate when the need arises. • Plans and implements, in conjunction with the Director and Teacher, methods of establishing positive liaison with the parents of the children attending the centre. • Works as a team member displaying patience, enthusiasm, and a sense of humour, maintaining confidentially at all times. • Shares relevant information about the children and their development with the appropriate staff. • Embraces the vision of the College and FELC. • Demonstrates and practices effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication. • Treats all individuals with respect and dignity at all times. • Performs other duties as directed by the manager/supervisor or Principal. Early Childhood Educator Assistant • Participates in and contributes to workplace health and safety activities to ensure a safe work environment for staff, students, and the College community. • Maintains a high standard of cleanliness, hygiene and order in all areas of the centre, including disinfecting of equipment and resources on a regular and consistent basis. • Helps ensure the security of the centre before leaving at the end of each day and complete safety checks at the beginning and/or end of each day. • Deals with stressful situations with professionalism. • Maintains a professional dress standard representing Flinders dress code. • Complies with the relevant work health and safety legislation. • Contributes to the assessments and rating process. FA 6 ADMINISTRATION & DOCUMENTATION Through the use of organisational processes ensure that administration and documentation requirements are initiated and completed in a professional and timely manner. • Ensures all documentation is accurate and completed in a professional and timely manner. • Assists in maintaining children’s records and observations and ensure they remain confidential, discussing only with other pertinent staff or parents. Consult with the Director, Group Leader, or Teacher before discussing any developmental/behavioural issues with parents. • Assists in the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and learning environment of the room, outdoor environments, and share in maintenance duties. • Regularly reads and implements centre policies, including infection control procedures, and assist in regularly evaluating and revising policies during staff meetings and at other times in consultation with the Director. • Participates in the National Quality Framework process. • Abides by the FELC and College Code of Conduct and Association of Early Childhood Code of Ethics and UN Convention for Children’s Rights. • Enjoys working in our purpose built Early Learning Centre where staff will be valued, nurtured, and listened to. • Ensures the FELC Philosophy and commitment to our Reggio approach are clearly reflected in the planned environments and relationships. Given the dynamic environment in which the College operates, the Principal reserves the right to alter roles and responsibilities of this position to most effectively suit the leadership and management requirements at any point in time.
