An Alumni Newsletter for Manhattan Christian School
Dear Alumni, Over the course of the past four years, I have been privileged to meet many of you alumni. It always brings me joy to see alumni come back for a visit. It does not matter if it is at some event that happens or if you just stop in for a visit, as some do. We continue to see an increase in the number of alumni who are enrolling their children at Manhattan Christian for the first time. This is so rewarding to see. It tells me that there are folks out there who value Christian Education so much that they are willing to make that investment in their children’s lives, just as their parents did in the past. It is a blessing to see that people understand that we are blessed to have a school like Manhattan Christian available to their family. Our school was founded in 1907 and at the completion of this coming year, we will have been in existence for 110 years. As alumnus of Manhattan Christian, you are part of a long tradition of strong Christian Education in the Gallatin Valley. With your support, MCS will, with God’s blessing, be in existence for another 110 years.

I encourage you to stay connected to what is going on around school. It really is easy to do. Our Facebook page is updated regularly and we send out our Weekly newsletter every Thursday during the school year. You can also receive the monthly Connections newsletter. Both of these newsletters are available electronically. If you are interested in receiving these newsletters, you may contact our school office.

Our enrollment continues to increase. In 2012, we had a total enrollment just around 245 (PK-12). At the beginning of the 2016 school year, we should top that number around 315 (PK-12). We continue to pray that we can sustain this steady growth rate. God has been good. (Continued on page 11) 12

Tim Cole graduated from MCHS in 1977 and spent the next five years driving truck and working in a warehouse in Bozeman. At the end of those five years, he decided to move on and go to college. He then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from what is now Kuyper College, in 1984. Once graduated, he took his first job in an inner-city ministry and held the position of Chaplain’s Assistant for one year. After that, he moved to another ministry where he was Program Director for ten years. Here, his responsibilities included reaching out with the compassion of Christ to the homeless– most of whom suffered from a mental health diagnosis. “40 percent of the people either are or were Veterans who had seen combat and never fully recovered, or women who got caught up in the extremely dangerous world of prostitution.” He developed relationships on a personal level and taught these people tools to help with deliverance from homelessness and addition.

(Continued from page 2) While running this ministry, Tim also seeks out to help people who may be living in the woods and in abandoned buildings with the hope of getting them medical care. This medical care may be provided to everyone including expectant mothers, as well as elderly. Tim Cole poses with one of the families he has assisted.

“All of this is difficult work, but I look back to my MCHS years and the lessons I learned in sports from Coach Ray Leenstra, and the tutelage of Dave Snapper, Darrel Wright, and Leroy Logterman who taught me to not back down from rejection and the importance of not being effected by rudeness and certain peoples attempts to try to make me feel as though I would never amount to much.” “While there were many problems throughout my years growing up in the school, I believe the doubt helped build me to be a stronger person, a person who proved to myself if one is willing to serve our Great Heavenly Father and be open to the leading of His Holy Spirit. Walking through deep valleys, you will find the strength to serve in His Kingdom and use the gifts He has given you if you are willing to follow. Thank you Manhattan Christian for preparing me with the God-driven experiences and strength to carry on. Thank you so much for your time. My prayer is that you are blessed as you attempt to train God’s children to be the best they can be in our Father’s Kingdom. (Continued from page 1) We have not lost more than five percent of our student population within any year, which is great!
Following that, Tim had the privilege of doing independent consulting with Servants Center– whose outreach was exclusively dedicated to severely mentally ill individuals and helping them with housing and personal care to help make their lives the best they could possibly be. “God blessed all of these efforts despite my own weaknesses and times where I felt defeated.”
Please do not hesitate to stop in at the school for a visit, even if it is just to say hello. Our staff truly enjoys seeing alumni stop in for a visit. It is always great to watch people’s expressions when they come back.
After three years, Tim began an independent ministry and founded Tim Cole Ministries whose mission statement is “Serving Christ by helping rural homeless and impoverished connect with their own needs.” This is an effort to help connect these extremely needy people and families to move on from homelessness and to help them establish themselves so they have an opportunity to move beyond the defeat and devastation of homelessness.
[email protected] with your e-mail information! We would love to save on printing costs and deliver information more quickly.
One of the things that Tim Cole Ministries has done is established a small ministry at a slum housing motel in Rockford, Michigan. While supported by private donations, they are able to rent a 12x15 room. Here, they are able to provide a small library, three small sofas, and a small supply of food for those who find themselves unable to purchase food and who may not have transportation to the nearest food pantry (2 miles away). They also have an optional finance management class, Bible studies, and fun social activities to give families a break from their rooms. At any given time, there may be families in there from anywhere from one to six children.

Alumni Event Report
January 2, 2016 was the date for a special event at Manhattan Christian. Our second annual alumni gathering was held in the MEC. At 11:00AM we kicked off the day with our first ever Alumni Volleyball games. We had 10 come to play with Coach Ayers, son Brody making the 11th. All had a great time. Following Vball we had a men’s B-ball contest and women’s game following the men. We had 24 folks come out to play, and also had many spectators. Lunch was served for those who came out for the games. At 4:00PM we opened the gates for the Ennis vs. MCS Basketball games. We had a huge crowd come out for the exciting games. The Boy’s Varsity came from behind to win the game 52-51. The girls trailed for much of the game but in the second half come roaring back to beat the Mustangs. In our JV games our boys prevailed and the girls JV lost. We had 134 Alumni register at our guest table this year. This is up from last year. The following decades were represented:

rememberwhen
Class of 1965 Carol DeYoung Class of 1965– It was a stellar year. Prompts many memories of things we hold dear. Memories that stick and are hard to erase. Things we recall when we ponder this place. First grade– old school– that wooden slanted floor. There Miss Koeman founded our educational core. Miss Omta and Miss Wierda came next in the row. Of teachers attempting to keep us in tow. Mostly, though, we’d often rather be outside. Swinging, sliding, or on a merry-go-round ride. Jump rope jingles with “Mamma calling the nurse.” And then too “the lady with the alligator purse.” Miss Kamps took her turn with us in grade four. She’d read after lunch and we’d always beg for more. Our favorites were Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. We read all, or most, or at least quite a few. Miss Jansen– grade five– not a favorite of ours. For punishment we’d copy textbook pages for hours. Then came sixth grade– Mrs. Nellie Gray. At recess we played Darebase almost every day. We did experiments in petri dishes in which mold grew. We published a newspaper and memorized speeches too. Seven and eight– Medendorp, Haak, DeJong, DeMaster. We even took Latin– must have been cuz we were faster. DeMaster threw a shoe at Margaret with a frown. Rev. Tadema– to find his money– turned Terry upside down. Then came high school and we matriculated well. With a plethora of events and stories to tell. Teachers like Kamps, Kooima, Haywook, Riemersma. Magee, DenBesten,m and Fisher, and Hiemstra. Evenhouse, Ostendorp, Timmer and Brink. All trying to teach us to reason and think. There’s Hulst and Alberda, and VanderKooi too. Imparting knowledge with assignments to do. We study hard to get these all done. But also found time to have plenty of fun. We played battleball during lunch in the gym. A wild game– that often would risk life and limb. We attempted drama in “The Thread That Runs So True.” In “HMS Pinafore” we added singing too. Junior Senior Banquet– cotton balls and flowers to make. Basketball games and a Senior trip to Salt Lake. Was there a naked man running in the hotel hall? And water balloons falling from second story windows– I recall? We always followed fashion trends of the day. So we liked short skirts, but faculty said “nay”. The rule was that skirt length had to reach the knee. They put us on our knees to check this our, you see. Surprisingly, each one of us, our skirts just touched the floor. The waistband got rolled up again, soon as we were out the door. Then there was that dreaded ineligibility list. When academically the mark we had missed. My name appeared there– that day for me was tough. Mr. Kamps said that I hadn’t tried hard enough. Our time at Manhattan Christian– past and done. The education we received was a quality one. The memories and stories are part of the past. We’re richly blessed by the Lord with values that last. With thankfulness in our hearts for the way we were raised. For God’s faithfulness always, may He be praised! 5

2016-2017 MS/HS Principal Introduction– Matt Kamps Mr. Matt Kamps will be joining the Manhattan Christian Staff in the Fall of 2016 as our new middle and high school principal.
First, for myself and my wife Missy, we are so grateful for the opportunity to serve the Manhattan Christian School community in the coming years. The first things you should know about me are that I love Jesus, I love kids, and I am excited about the advancement and growth of Christian education. We have lived for the past year and a half in Escondido, California, and before that we lived for 7 years in Everett, Washington. For most of both our childhoods, we both lived in the Lynden, Washington area. Our children are Elijah (8), Micah (6), Zechariah (4), Lily (2), and Samuel, who is 5 months old. Missy and I are both teachers, and I have been an administrator for the past 9 years, while Missy has done the important work of being a mom. We taught together in the country of Honduras for 2 years and that is where our oldest son was born. I am a graduate of Trinity Christian College with a major in history. We have some roots in Montana, not least of which is my grandpa George Kamps who lives in the Churchill Retirement Home. We are humbled by the call to serve at MCS and we look forward to meeting you and serving together for God's kingdom.
Congratulations To Our Seniors Congratulations to our senior class of 2016 for graduating from Manhattan Christian School! We wish you the best in your future endeavors and pray for God’s blessings on your lives! (*denotes National Honor Society) ·Lindsay Benson* ·Kevin Blanksma* ·Austin Bos

Farewells to Staff Members Patrick DeJong Teaching Staff Deidre Klompien—Miss Klompien came to Manhattan Christian as a teacher in the fall of 2012. Miss Klompien is also a graduate of Manhattan Christian. She returned to teach at MCS with a great deal of enthusiasm and dedication. Miss Klompien brought with her a fantastic work ethic and love of teaching that has had an incredibly positive influence on our community. Miss Klompien has a can do attitude that is infectious to those who work on projects with her. Her students love her dearly and I know that some of the students who were hoping to have her in the near future are sad to see her leave MCS. Miss Klompien’s personal witness of being a true woman of God with a deep commitment to her Lord and Savior has been a blessing to MCS. A desire to passing that on to the next generation through teaching has been evidenced in her classroom on a daily basis. We wish her well as she embarks on her next adventure in life. We thank Miss Klompien for sharing her teaching skills and life with us for the past 4 years. Administrative Staff Helen Emmelkamp—This year will mark the end of a nearly 50+ year educational association with Manhattan Christian School for Mrs. Helen Emmelkamp. Mrs. Emmelkamp was born and raised in the valley and she graduated High School from Manhattan Christian. Aside from a brief teaching assignment at Millbrook Christian School in Michigan, Mrs. Emmelkamp has really spent her entire life associated with MCS. There was a period of interruption to begin a family and raise children, which took her out of the classroom, however she still remained an active volunteer at school. In 1996 Mrs. Emmelkamp returned to MCS teaching full time . She began her Master’s program in Educational Leadership while teaching and became the MS / HS Principal in 2008. She has anchored that leadership position since that time. Mrs. Emmelkamp has served Manhattan Christian well. Being a Principal is often a lonely job because of the sometimes unpleasant decisions that have to be made when dealing with teenagers. Helen has demonstrated a deep love for Manhattan Christian and dedicated herself to doing the best job possible with reliance upon her Lord and Savior. Helen has demonstrated a deep concern for the welfare of each student and staff member under her care. The hours spent on reports, observations, supervisions, student interactions, parent interactions, staff interactions and general school management could not be counted.
·Luke Young* “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
We want to THANK MRS. EMMELKAMP from the bottom of our hearts for her consistent and dedicated service to Manhattan Christian School and community she has served so faithfully. In retirement Mrs. Emmelkamp indicated to me that she is not leaving the valley and hopes to remain active in the school as her grandchildren are just starting school.
