BEST JUNIOR COLOUR IMAGE-MIKE VOLKMAN– YELLOW CHAIR

On a photo outing from the roof top of the Embassy building in Durban, whilst others were photographing the city landscape outside I managed to gain access to this vantage point inside a sky-dome overlooking an office suite with a mezzanine lobby below. As it was getting late in the day the available light was minimal and some sun, as well as light from a fitting under the walkway illuminated the chair making for a striking

BEST JUNIOR COLOUR IMAGE—BILLY MILLS- PERIWINKLE

The photograph of the reflections of a periwinkle flower was taken during a visit to Hogsback in spring last year. Water was sprayed onto the stigma of an azalea flower and placed in front of the periwinkle flower. Ambient light was used but small LED lights were positioned in order to create the optimum reflections. The photograph was taken with a Nikon D7100 and a Nikkor 105mm lens, set in aperture priority at F16, a shutter speed of 1/4sec and an ISO of 100 with exposure compensation of +0.33EV. The post processing was done in Photoshop CC

BEST JUNIOR MONOCHROME IMAGE—BILLY MILLS-”EGG AND FORKS”

While researching the various opportunities for the ‘household item’ theme this month, it was decided to experiment and photograph a combination of an egg with a couple of forks. I could not find a pure white egg so had to carefully spray paint one matt-white. The weight of the egg forced the points of the forks downwards so the ends of the forks had to be pinned down to prevent a Humpty Dumpty accident. After this balancing act, the photograph was taken with a Nikon D7100 and a Nikkor 105mm lens set in aperture priority at F11, a shutter speed of 1/10 sec, an EV of 0.0 and an ISO of 500. Ambient and strategically placed LED lighting was used. Post processing and conversion to a black and white image was conducted in Photoshop CC with TKv4 and NIK applications.
