This is not a malfunction. • If the surrounding temperature is very high, the protective function will turn off the player automatically. Leave the player in a cool location for about 30 minutes before using it again. On handling the player • Keep the lens on the player clean and do not touch it. If you do so, the lens may be damaged and the player will not operate properly. • Do not put any heavy object on top of the player. The player and the disc may be damaged. • Do not leave the player in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture,

On headphones • If the supplied headphones cause any skin trouble, immediately stop using them and consult a doctor. • Sound will leak from the supplied headphones if you turn up the volume too high. Keep the volume at a moderate level so that you do not disturb other people around you and you can hear when you are being called. Keep this in mind especially in noisy places where one tends to turn up the volume. On adjusting the volume Do not turn up the volume while listening to a section with very low level inputs or no audio signals. If you do, the speakers may be damaged when a peak level section is played. Road safety Do not use the monitor unit and headphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headsets at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations. Preventing hearing damage Avoid using headphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue use.

Consideration for others Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.

For the customers in the U.S.A. and Canada Replace the AC power adaptor with model AC-E1020 only, if replacement is necessary.

Glossary Chapter (page 14)

Sections of a picture or a music feature that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Depending on the disc, no chapters may be recorded. Dolby Digital (page 41, 52, 66)

Digital audio compression technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. This technology conforms to sound ranging from monaural to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. Dolby Digital provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Good channel separation is realized because all of the channel data are recorded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital. Dolby Surround Pro Logic (page 52)

DTS (page 41, 52, 67)

Digital audio compression technology that Digital Theater Systems, Inc. developed. This technology conforms to 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo and there is a discrete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio. Good channel separation is realized because all of the channel data is recorded discretely and little deterioration is realized because all channel data processing is digital.

A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and doublesided DVD is 9.4 GB, and double-layer and double-sided DVD is 17 GB. The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 (average) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture. Audio information is recorded in Dolby Digital as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy a more real audio presence. Furthermore, various advanced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD. Index (CD)/Video Index (VIDEO CD) (page 14)

A number that divides a track into sections to easily locate the point you want on a VIDEO CD or CD. Depending on the disc, no index may be recorded. MPEG audio (page 41, 52, 67)

International standard coding system used to compress audio digital signals authorized by ISO/IEC. MPEG 1 conforms to up to 2channel stereo. MPEG 2, used on DVDs, conforms to up to 7.1-channel surround.

Additional Information

Audio signal processing technology that Dolby Laboratories developed for surround sound. When the input signal contains a surround component, the Pro Logic process outputs the front, center, and rear signals. The rear channel is monaural.

DVD (page 8)

Parental Control (page 67)

A function of the DVD used to limit playback of the disc according to the age of the user and the limitation level in each country. The limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is activated, or playback is completely continued ,

73

prohibited, violent scenes are skipped or replaced with other scenes, etc. Region Code (page 8)

This system is used to protect copyrights. A region number is allocated on each DVD player or DVD disc according to the sales region. Each region code is shown on the player as well as on the disc packaging. The player can play the discs that match its region code. The player can also play discs with the ALL mark. Even when the region code is not shown on the DVD, the region limit may still be activated. Scene (page 14)

On a VIDEO CD with PBC (playback control) functions, the menu screens, moving pictures and still pictures are divided into sections called “scenes.” Title (page 14)

The longest section of a picture or music feature on a DVD, movie, etc., in video software, or the entire album in audio software. Track (page 14)

Sections of a picture or a music feature on a VIDEO CD or CD (the length of a song).
