Precautions On safety • Caution – The use of optical instruments with this product will increase eye hazard. • This unit operates on 100 – 240 V AC, 50/ 60 Hz. Check that the unit’s operating voltage is identical with your local power supply. • To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the apparatus. • Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the player and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further. • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 10 V (external power input) jack. • To prevent fire, do not cover the ventilation of the apparatus with newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc. And don’t place lighted candles on the apparatus. • Do not install the appliance in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet. On temperature increases • Heat may build up inside the unit during charging or if it is being used for a long time. This is not a malfunction. • If the surrounding temperature is very high, the protective function will turn off the player automatically. Leave the player in a cool location for about 30 minutes before using it again. On handling the player • Keep the lens on the player clean and do not touch it. If you do so, the lens may be damaged and the player will not operate properly. • Do not put any heavy object on top of the player. The player and the disc may be damaged. • Do not leave the player in a location near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand, moisture,
rain, mechanical shock, on an unlevel surface, or in a car with its windows closed. • If the player causes interference to radio or television reception, turn off the player or move it away from the radio or television. • If the player is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp place, moisture may condense on the lenses of the player. Should this occur, the player may not operate properly. In this case, remove the disc and leave the player for about half an hour until the moisture evaporates. • Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart, square, star) cannot be played on this player. Attempting to do so may damage the player. Do not use such discs. On the rechargeable battery • Charge the rechargeable battery before you start using it. • Do not allow dust to come into contact with the battery terminals of the player and rechargeable battery. • Do not short the terminals. • Do not leave the battery in a place subject to direct sunlight, or in a car with its windows closed. • Keep the battery dry. xTo store the rechargeable battery The rechargeable battery is consumed gradually as time elapses even if it is not used. In order to prevent the battery from deteriorating, store the rechargeable battery as follows: • Remove the rechargeable battery from the player after use. • Use up the battery completely on the player before storing it. • Keep the rechargeable battery in a cool location to prevent it from deteriorating. • Charge and use the rechargeable battery at least once in 6 months. xTo dispose of the rechargeable battery Certain countries may regulate disposal of the battery used to power this product. On handling the LCD screen • The LCD is manufactured using highprecision technology. You may, however, see tiny black points and/or bright points (red, blue, green) that continuously appear on the LCD. This is a normal result of the manufacturing process and does not indicate a malfunction. • Do not scratch the LCD or exert pressure on it. This could cause a malfunction. • Using the player in low temperature conditions may produce a residual image on the screen. This is not a malfunction. When the player returns to normal temperature, the screen returns to normal. On charging the rechargeable battery • Use only the rechargeable battery supplied with this player. Other rechargeable batteries supplied with other models cannot be used with this player. • The rechargeable battery may become warm during charging, however this is normal and is not a malfunction. • When the battery life of a fully charged rechargeable battery becomes about half the normal life, you may need to replace the battery with a new one. • Disconnect the rechargeable battery from the player as soon as the battery has been charged. Leaving it connected may result in reduced battery performance. On power sources • Use only the supplied AC power adaptor. Do not use any other AC power adaptor. It may cause a malfunction. Polarity of the plug
• If the AC power adaptor causes interference to radio reception, move it away from the radio. • Do not touch the AC power adaptor with wet hands. • Connect the AC power adaptor to a wall outlet within your reach so that you can

disconnect the AC power adaptor as soon as something unusual occurs. • For the customers in the U.S.A.: Use a commercially available AC plug adaptor [a], if necessary, depending on the design of the wall outlet [b].
AC power adaptor
On headphones • If the supplied headphones cause any skin trouble, immediately stop using them and consult a doctor. • Sound will leak from the supplied headphones if you turn up the volume too high. Keep the volume at a moderate level so that you do not disturb other people around you and you can hear when you are being called. Keep this in mind especially in noisy places where one tends to turn up the volume. On adjusting the volume Do not turn up the volume while listening to a section with very low level inputs or no audio signals. If you do, the speakers may be damaged when a peak level section is played. Road safety Do not use the monitor unit and headphones while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous to play your headsets at high volume while walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations. Preventing hearing damage Avoid using headphones at high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue use.
Consideration for others Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.
For the customers in the U.S.A. and Canada Replace the AC power adaptor with model AC-E1020 only, if replacement is necessary.
On cleaning
Replace the Car battery cord with model DCC-E8 only, if replacement is necessary.
xCasing Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine as it may mar the finish of the casing. xLCD of the monitor unit Wipe the LCD lightly with a soft cloth. Using the LCD cleaning kit (page 76, not supplied) is recommended. xPlugs of the monitor unit and headphones Clean the plugs of the monitor unit and headphones periodically so that you can always enjoy good picture and sound. On cleaning discs Do not use commercially available cleaning discs. This may cause a malfunction. IMPORTANT NOTICE Caution: This player is capable of holding a still video image or on-screen display image on your television screen indefinitely. If you leave the still video image or on-screen display image displayed on your TV for an extended period of time you risk permanent damage to your television screen. Projection televisions are especially susceptible to this.
RECYCLING LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES Lithium-Ion batteries are recyclable. You can help preserve our environment by returning your used rechargeable batteries to the collection and recycling location nearest you. For more information regarding recycling of rechargeable batteries, call toll free 1-800822-8837, or visit http://www.rbrc.org/. Caution: Do not handle damaged or leaking lithiumion batteries. Never expose the battery pack to temperatures above 140 °F (60 °C) such as in a car parked in the sun or under direct sunlight.

This Player Can Play the Following Discs
xWhen you view video on the monitor unit VIDEO CDs and DVDs in either the NTSC or PAL color system can be viewed on the LCD screen of the monitor unit. xWhen you connect the supplied AV output adaptor and view video on the TV monitor • VIDEO CDs in either the NTSC or PAL color system can be viewed irrespective of the TV color system. • DVDs in the same color system as the connected TV can be viewed, i.e. NTSC DVDs on an NTSC TV and PAL DVDs on a PAL TV. • For Hong Kong, China and tourist models only: Set the NTSC/PAL switch on the player to the appropriate TV color system. Note Some DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, CD-Rs or CD-RWs cannot be played on this player depending upon the recording quality or physical condition of the disc, or the characteristics of the recording device. Furthermore, the disc will not play if it has not been correctly finalized. For more information, see the operating instructions for the recording device.

Your player has a region code printed on the bottom of the player and will only play DVDs labelled with identical region codes. DVDs labeled ALL will also play on this player. If you try to play any other DVD, the message “Playback prohibited by area limitations.” will appear on the TV screen. Depending on the DVD, no region code indication may be labeled even though playing the DVD is prohibited by area restrictions. Region Code

Terms for discs Title The longest sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD; a movie, etc., for a picture piece on a video software; or an album, etc., for a music piece on an audio software. Each title is assigned a title number enabling you to locate the title you want. Chapter Sections of a picture or a music piece that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate the chapter you want. Depending on the disc, no chapters may be recorded. Track Sections of a picture or a music piece on a VIDEO CD or a CD. Each track is assigned a track number enabling you to locate the track you want. xDVD structure Disc Title
Scene On a VIDEO CD with PBC functions, the menu screens, moving pictures and still pictures are divided into sections called “scenes.” Each scene is assigned a scene number enabling you to locate the scene you want.

Index
Index (CD)/Video Index (VIDEO CD) A number that divides a track into sections to easily locate the point you want on a VIDEO CD or a CD. Depending on the disc, no indexes may be recorded.
Also, the player cannot play the following discs: • A DVD with a different region code (page 74). • A disc that has a non-standard shape (e.g., card, heart). • A disc with paper or stickers on it. • A disc that has the adhesive of cellophane tape or a sticker still left on it.

Notes on playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs • Some playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs may be intentionally set by software producers. Since this player plays DVDs and VIDEO CDs according to the disc contents the software producers designed, some playback features may not be available. Also, refer to the instructions supplied with the DVDs or VIDEO CDs. • CDs and VIDEO CDs may be heard louder than DVDs even at the same volume setting. This is due to the recorded volume level intended by the producers. Set the volume lower in advance.

Notes about the Discs On handling discs • To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its edge. Do not touch the surface. • Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.
On storing • Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts, or leave it in a car parked in direct sunlight as the temperature may rise considerably inside the car. • After playing, store the disc in its case. On cleaning • Fingerprints or dust on a disc may cause deteriorated image or sound quality. Leave the disc clean. • Wipe the disc with a soft cloth from the center out.
• If the disc is very dirty, first wipe it with a damp cloth, then wipe it again with a dry cloth. • Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.

Guide to On-Screen Displays (Status Bar and Control Menu) The following explains the 2 types of on-screen displays used with this player: Status Bar and Control Menu. To change the language for the on-screen display You may change the language for the on-screen display to your desired one. See “Using the Setup Display” on page 63.

Inserting batteries into the remote You can control the player using the supplied remote. Insert two size AA (R6) batteries (not supplied) by matching the 3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using the remote, point it at the remote sensor on the player. Insert the #
end first.
Notes • Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place. • Do not drop any foreign object into the remote casing, particularly when replacing the batteries. • Do not expose the remote sensor to direct light from the sun or lighting apparatus. Doing so may cause a malfunction. • If you do not use the remote for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage and corrosion.

Measured during DVD playback in “NORMAL” sound mode, BRIGHT knob at the minimum Battery life may differ depending on the surrounding temperature or conditions under which the player is used.
When the battery power becomes low The status bar automatically appears and flashes. The power is automatically turned off after a few minutes. When the battery is discharged completely, you will hear short beeps from the headphones and the POWER indicators on the player and monitor unit will flash in red. To confirm the remaining battery power You can check the battery power remaining on the status bar. If starts flashing, connect the player to an AC outlet and recharge the battery. Notes • If you press NX (H on the remote) during charging, charging is suspended until you turn off the player. • Do not touch the jacks on the player or those on the rechargeable battery. Doing so may cause a malfunction. • The indicator sections of roughly shows the remaining battery power. One section does not always indicate one-third of the battery power, however.
z If you do not intend to use the rechargeable battery for a long time, use up the battery completely and keep it in a cool location to prevent the battery from deteriorating. Charge and use the battery at least once in 6 months. To use the player with the AC power adaptor Remove the rechargeable battery when using the player with the AC power adaptor. Connect the power cord after all other connections are completed.

Step 3: Playing a Disc A Make sure the power is turned off. Securely connect the monitor unit to the player, and the headphones to the monitor unit.

Getting Started
You can connect the supplied headphones to the i jack on the player. By connecting headphones to the i jacks on both the monitor unit and player, two people can listen together.

z If you keep the player in stop mode for 3 minutes, the player is turned off automatically (Auto Power Off).

When you stop the disc, the player remembers the point where you pressed x. As long as you do not remove the disc, Resume Play works even if the player is turned off.
z To play from the beginning of the disc, while pressing SHIFT, press x when the player is stopped. You can play from the beginning also by opening the buckle and fasten again. Notes • Depending on where you stopped the disc, the player may not resume playback from exactly the same point. • The point where you stopped playing may be cleared when: – you disconnect the rechargeable battery or power cord. – you change the play mode. – you change the settings on the Setup Display. – you disconnect the AV output adaptor and connect it again.

Using the DVD’s Menu A DVD is divided into long sections of a picture or a music feature called “titles.” When you play a DVD which contains several titles, you can select the title you want using the TOP MENU button. When you play DVDs that allow you to select items such as the language for the subtitles and the language for the sound, select these items using the MENU button.

Playing Discs
With PBC (Playback Control) functions, you can enjoy simple interactive operations, search functions, and other operations. PBC playback allows you to play VIDEO CDs interactively by following the menu on the TV screen.
Number buttons
Press X/x or the number buttons to select the item number you want. Press ENTER. Follow the instructions in the menu for interactive operations.
To go back to the menu Press b while pressing SHIFT. On the remote, press ORETURN. To play with PBC turned off Press ./> while the player is stopped to select a track, then press NX (H) or ENTER. “Play without PBC.” appears on the TV screen and the player starts continuous play. You cannot play still pictures such as a menu. z To return to PBC playback, while pressing SHIFT, press x when the player is stopped. You can return to PBC playback also by opening the buckle and fasten again. Notes • Depending on the VIDEO CD, “Press ENTER” in Step 3 may appear as “Press SELECT” in the instructions supplied with the disc. Press ENTER also in this case. • The PBC functions of Super VCDs do not work with this player. Super VCDs are played in continuous play mode only. • The OGT (Overlay Graphics and TEXT) function of Super VCD does not work with this player.

Searching for a Scene

Sound Adjustments
If the DVD is recorded with multilingual tracks, you can select the language you want while playing the DVD. If the DVD is recorded in multiple audio formats (PCM, Dolby Digital, MPEG audio or DTS), you can select the audio format you want while playing the DVD. With stereo CDs or VIDEO CDs, you can select the sound from the right or left channel and listen to the sound of the selected channel through both the right and left headphones. (In this case, the sound loses its stereo effect.) For example, when playing a disc containing a song with the vocals on the right channel and the instruments on the left channel, you can select the left channel and hear the instruments from both headphones.

For example, while playing a scene of a train in motion, you can display the view from either the front of the train, the left window of the train, or from the right window without having the train’s movement interrupted.

Setting the Alarm When the preset time has elapsed, you will hear beeps from the headphones.
The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function keeps down the maximum volume to protect your hearing.

Troubleshooting If you experience any of the following difficulties while using the player, use this troubleshooting guide to help remedy the problem before requesting repairs. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Power The power will not turn on. , If you are using the player with the rechargeable battery, you cannot turn on the player using the remote. Press NX on the monitor unit or player. , Check that the rechargeable battery or power cord is connected securely. , The rechargeable battery is not charged. , Check that the rechargeable battery is connected correctly (page 18).

A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and doublesided DVD is 9.4 GB, and double-layer and double-sided DVD is 17 GB. The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 (average) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture. Audio information is recorded in Dolby Digital as well as in PCM, allowing you to enjoy a more real audio presence.
