T H E ROYA L OA K F O U N D AT I O N Dear Members and Friends of Royal Oak, Art, aristocracy and commerce: the Saône and Rhône Rivers in France have seen plenty of all three. For more than one hundred years, in the late Middle Ages, the Dukes of Burgundy commissioned masterpiece after masterpiece and could do so because they ruled over a region rich in natural resources and clever traders. A little further south, the popes, who had moved to Avignon, were intent on keeping a splendid court; and Lyon itself was the site of one of the great medieval trading fairs, after which it became the greatest silk-weaving city in Europe. Joining us on this exceptional program will be architectural historian and noted garden author Patrick Bowe, who will lecture on the lovely Provençal gardens and landscapes we will be seeing. Our travels will also be enriched by erudite scholar and art historian Olivier Bernier, who was recently made a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. Begin in Lyon, a handsome city with extraordinary museums, where we embark the luxurious riverboat M.S. AmaDagio. Pass lush landscapes and famous vineyards on the way to Dijon, once the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy. Here, a visit to the Musée des Beaux-Arts will reveal masterpieces of 15th-century sculpture. As we cruise south, step ashore to see the spectacular ruins of the medieval Abbey of Cluny and walk through Tournon, a remarkably well-preserved town. Continuing on to Avignon, we will understand just what prestige demanded for the pope’s palace. A highlight of our time here will be a specially arranged visit to the home—once a Benedictine abbey—of a former Louvre curator. Finally, in Aix and Arles, move through time from ancient Roman monuments to the world of Vincent van Gogh. And in nearby Nîmes, admire the Carré d’Art Museum, a masterpiece of renowned architect Sir Norman Foster. Alternatively, spend a day in the Camargue to see its wild horses, flamingos and flora. Adding Paris to the many pleasures of this trip will be numerous opportunities to ensure that the region’s reputation for gastronomy and fine wines is still deserved. An optional prelude in Geneva features museum tours, gardens in full bloom and a visit to the Palais des Nations.
