Driving towards a future

BRIEFLY Ross Sea adventure

BY DEAN TAYLOR

Next Wednesday, Dr Julie Hall from NIWA will ‘take’ members of Te Awamutu Continuing Education Group on the research ship ‘Tangaroa’ as it travels to the Ross Sea in Antarctica. The ship will search for and find sea creatures never seen before. This interesting address with illustrations will be open to anyone who is interested in a journey of discovery. Details of the meeting are included in today’s Public Notices section.

Travel tip Local resident Weyman Ballantyne was targeted by a telephone travel fraudster recently and wants to warn other Courier readers. Mr Ballantyne says the caller from Australia knew his Christian name and other personal details and wanted a Visa card number to provide a ‘travel package’ (which included a quantity of Australian dollars), which he declined. The incident was reported to Police. Mr Ballantyne has had an interesting time recently — about six week ago his wife was advised that an ATM she had used at Glenview had been the subject of a scanner for theft purposes, but fortunately it was detected and the financial threat eliminated.

Billy TK Jnr is one of New Zealand’s best guitar exponents — and he is passionate about bringing road safety messages to young Kiwis. Both traits were obvious when the Kiwi music star visited Te Awamutu College yesterday to spread the ‘Driving Towards a Smokefree Future’ to the students. Over two sessions, Billy TK was able to touch on three key ingredients of road safety — crossing roads, wearing seatbelts and preventing drink driving. Billy TK Jnr put together the school’s package as his way of using his profile and skills to help young people survive. He plans to take the message to every student in New Zealand. Te Awamutu College was his 112th school, and he hasn’t finished the top half of the North Island yet. His message was simple — ‘you can do anything yo want if you live long enough to do it’. He says the Smokefree sponsorship is part of the message. ‘‘It’s about making healthy and sensible lifestyle choices —

whether it is to do with not starting smoking or being a good and responsible driver.’’ The presentation used reasonably graphic and shocking visuals to get the message across — but at Bill TK said, ‘that’s the reality’. In fact he told the students about his preparation for the programme, saying he worked for a week at the Auckland Morgue and that no-one should ever have to see a deceased person killed in a road crash. The public presentation concluded with a short show by Billy TK Jnr and the Groove Shakers — the hard working band that is touring his new album ‘Presenting Billy TK Jnr’ between ‘Driving Towards a Smokefree Future’ commitments.Students were then given a chance to work on an interactive computer programme which promotes the ‘Practice’ programme developed by LTNZ and ACC. The Practice programme aims to provide learner drivers and their coaches with a structured plan for getting two or more hours driving practice a week. This free programme enables the learner driver to develop tools for safe driving

Research indicates that a learner driver with 120 hours supervised driving practice under their belt is 30% less likely to have a crash when they start driving

alone. The school programme is supported by a number of national sponsors. Waipa District Council also provided sponsorship to bring Billy TK Jnr to Te Awamutu College and Cambridge High School.

What a buzz! Te Awamutu Plumbing and Drainage recently received a call from a distressed resident. ‘‘My pipes in the handbasin are making a buzzing noise — can you hear them?’’ She duly held out the phone so the noise could be heard. A plumber was dispatched immediately to investigate the problem. On arrival a close inspection was made of the offending pipe work, then the vanity drawer was opened and the cordless razor turned off. Silence reigned from the embarrassed lady...

No doubt others will be suggesting activities for children in response to Kim Dove’s letter in Tuesday’s Courier. In the Memorial Park there used to be a putting green where I took some old golf clubs and a van load of children. I also used to take them to play on the old engine and to light an illegal barbecue fire nearby. I heaved them up into the trees in Anzac Green, where I have also seen

families playing cricket. Suburban street cricket happens, but needs carwatch people on duty at both ends of the pitch. Sometimes I took children to the tennis courts or to the netball courts, along with the necessary gear. We made up games in the parks, in the rotunda at Teasdale Street and around the pathways. Wet weather, soggy ground and a rising river didn’t deter over 100 people turning out to help plant the Eileen Montefiore Reserve. Spokesperson for the organisers, Betsy Bryant of the Lower Mangapiko Stream Care Group says it was a wonderful response. ‘‘Thanks to all of those hardy people who turned out.We even had the nephew of Eileen Montefiore, Andrew Kay, helping. With so many people it didn’t take long to put in the 420 plants.’’ Amongst the group were Te

Awamutu College, KTAB, Honda, WDC and Environment Waikato representatives. Environment Waikato King Country councillor Andra Neeley was also amongst the group and says she applauds the efforts of the local farmers in the care group. ‘‘They are obviously passionate about looking after the environment. The whole community will benefit from the time and effort they have invested in this project. ‘‘Trees will improve the habitat for native plants and animals, stabilise stream banks to reduce erosion and sediment pollution, and

planting season for the Lower Mangapiko Stream Care Group. Environment Waikato is working with the care group to restore the Mangapiko Stream by fencing it off from stock and planting native trees along the banks. The next stage is the planting of about 12,000 trees and shrubs, funded by Fonterra, which will be planted on private properties over the next few months. Fonterra staff helped with planting days on farms last year and will be helping again this year. ‘‘They feel its a great project to be associated with and a great team

building opportunity.’’ Mrs Bryant is keen to hear from any other businesses that would like to take part in planting days. ‘‘Plantings will be carried out on ten properties this year and further weed clearing, fencing and planting work is planned for this summer and next year.’’ She says about 25,000 natives will have been planted along the banks of the Mangapiko Stream and its tributaries in the first three years of the project. For more information about planting days or the care group, call Mrs Bryant (ph 871 8989).

Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust wants feedback on future direction and funding future — as an eco experience with tree top walks, an information centre, the chance to see the wildlife up close, or, as a more natural experience without the tourism frills,’’ says Trust chief executive Jim Mylchreest.

‘‘That input will help determine which funding avenues the Trust explores over the next five years.’’ Maungatautari is the largest multi-species pest proof fenced area in New Zealand. Takahe, kiwi, kaka and kokopu have already been

She’s lucky number seven in hairdressing family BY CATHY ASPLIN When you are the youngest of a highly successful hairdressing family, going to your first competition must be fairly daunting. But Bianca Karam-Whalley (17) from Team 7 showed she is just as talented as her six older siblings (and her mother Lynnette) by making a big impression at the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers’ competitions in Auckland. ‘‘I felt the pressure and was really nervous before the competition - I couldn’t even eat. ‘‘The rest of the family have been so successful in competitions that I had a hard act to follow!’’ Bianca entered the Directional Men’s Cut, with her model Te

Awamutu College student Johnny Burn, and admits she didn’t see or hear much going on around her during the event. ‘‘I had tunnel vision really - I just tried to concentrate totally on what I was doing and hoped it was good enough.’’ So when the results were announced and she had won her section she felt a huge sense of relief. ‘‘The judges said the cut was well balanced and modern, with strong points. ‘‘I relaxed after that and so was totally suprised when I was also announced Top Cutting Apprentice and Overall Junior Champion.’’ Normally this would mean she would also represent the region,

but as she is from a different area she needs to compete in her own Waikato - on August 17. Bianca is entering several sections and if successful there she will be part of the Waikato Supreme Team. She is still searching for some models for this event. Anyone interested in being a model for competitions should contact Bianca at Team 7 (phone 871 6583). TC300708CA01

Kihikihi Rotarians are certainly a generous bunch

TC300708SP11

INCOMING Kihikihi Rotary Club president, Dave Southcombe (left), receives the chain of office and congratulations from his predecessor, Ian Wards.

Kihikihi Rotary Club is the second most generous club in the wide ranging Rotary District 9930 on a per capita basis. This fact was revealed by District Governor, John Tarbutt in reviewing the 2006/07 year. A review of the past year’s activities at the club’s recent change of officers night by outgoing president Ian Wards illustrates the Kihikihi Club’s excellent output. Paul Harris Fellowships awarded to Mayor Alan Livingston and Roger Peake saw contributions made to Rotary International’s fund for ‘Health, Hunger and Humanity’.

There was funding for two Shelter Boxes for overseas aid valued at $1500 each and two Emergency Boxes valued at $700 each to assist victims of natural disasters. One Shelter Box was in recognition of club members Tony and Esme Bashford, who returned to England, and the other in memory of the late Hugh Donaldson, a charter member of the club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) benefitted from the garden concert organised by Peter Robertson, with a club top up seeing $1,000 donated. The club assisted in the purchase of a lawnmower

for Pirongia Forest Park Lodge and towards the cost of the new Wheelchair Wagon for Te Awamutu. A raised garden was built for Te Awamutu Residential Trust (for people with disabilities) on the District 9930 work day programme. The telephone directory is still popular and well supported, thanks to the devotion of Stuart Law and his staff. The can collection is not as well supported, but continues to generate funds, as does manning the gates for polo and Waikato Rodeo at Kihikihi. Mr Wards thanked club members for their efforts and loyal support over the

past two years, including secretary Beth Wallace, treasurer Ian Maxted and other officers. He then handed over the presidential chain to incoming president, Dave Southcombe. Other officers elected were: Secretary Beth Wallace, treasurer Kathryn Badrick, sergeant at arms Ruth Cunningham, public relations Ian Wards and Kathryn Badrick, bulletin editor Peter Robertson. The new president thanked Mr Wards for his leadership of the club over the past two years and presented Mr Wards’ wife, Maree with a bouquet of flowers for her support.

Takahe head home The two takahe on Maungatautari are returning to the Tautari Wetland now that the pest eradication operation has been completed in their wetland ‘home’. On May 14 the birds (which are pictured right) were temporarily transferred to the pest free southern enclosure while the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust removed mice and rabbits from the 3ha wetland as part of the overall pest eradication programme on the mountain. ‘‘The habitat in the enclosure has certainly suited the birds with Gahnia (bush cutty grass) proving a particular favourite during their two month stay,’’

says Trust fauna ecologist Chris SmutsKennedy. ‘‘We now want the birds settled back into the locked wetland before breeding begins in September." Last year the takahe produced a fertile egg but it unfortunately

failed to hatch. While initial pest monitoring rounds indicate that all pests have been eliminated from the wetland, the area will continue to be monitored to ensure the ongoing safety of these critically endangered takahe.

Rivers coping well with heavy rainfall Environment Waikato’s river management systems are coping well as a burst of severe weather moves over the region. Overall this event has been greater than the MetService was predicting, but rivers are generally handling it well and flood management schemes are operating as designed, Environment Waikato emergency management officer Adam Munro said. Mr Munro said rain had been heavy, particularly in the Coromandel, Hauraki and north Waikato areas. There has been a lot more rain than forecast. As at 10am yesterday morning, the Golden Cross rainfall monitoring station in the hills behind Waihi had recorded about 300mm of rain over

a 24-hour period, about double what was predicted. Heavy rainfall also triggered flood alarms in the Lower Waihou and Piako rivers. Because catchments were already saturated following last weekend’s weather, rivers have reacted faster than they would have otherwise. Widespread surface flooding will continue to impact low lying areas for some time after this event has passed and this will require ongoing management and monitoring. More information about rainfall and river levels is available on the website, www.ew.govt.nz and for Waipa on 0832 25 336 (12c a minute from a standard telephone).

He says the move to be part of Master Builders was a good choice. Mr Davies says the process to join is rigorous, but the results are worthwhile. Master Builders keep members involved - with regular information about what is happening within the industry and opportunities to have their say about developments. The organisation lobbies on behalf of its membership and make sure members have opportunities to tender for work.

Te Awamutu recorded their fourth win in five games with a 2-1 away victory over Otorohanga in Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation Soccer League. The win not only avenged a loss to Otorohanga earlier in the season, it took Te Awamutu to the top of the bottom six section of the league. Team manager Ken Miezenbeek puts Te Awamutu’s purple patch of form down to the fact that coach Tim Ball has had a settled line-up to work with over the past few weeks. All the goals in the match at Otorohanga on Saturday were scored in the second half. Andrew Ryan and James

Maxwell both went close to scoring for Te Awamutu, only to see the home team break the deadlock. Playmaker Ryan set up both Te Awamutu’s goals, to Tim ball and Maxwell. Player of the day was young Liam Phillips. Te Awamutu have a home game against Huntly at Anchor Park this Saturday. The Cape Physio reserve team were beaten 5-2 by Hamilton North, while the Print House third team were 6-1 winners over Hamilton Wanderers. Waikato Cakes women’s reserve team beat Unicol B2 3-1 with goals to Angela Mourits, Tracey Reekers (2).

Vets, Eagles have fine time The weather greatly improved for a field of 41 Vets and Eagles to compete for the Frank Pinfold Tray at ASB Te Awamutu Golf Club. The Eagles pipped the local veteran golfers with a superior average stableford score of 30.3 to 28.9. Trevor Fleming, Mike Claydon and Russell Stuck (Eagles) headed the individual scramble with a hard earned 35 points, followed by Toby

Thomson, Barry Preece ( E a g les ) , Jer em y St u b b s (Eagles) and John Wood (Eagles) on 34. Colin Green reports that good humour and conviviality prevailed to end the day on the usual high note. The teams are now looking forward to next year’s encounter. The above event was the only competitive golf held on the course this week due to unfavourable weather.

Pirongia trophies decided Pirongia Golf Club’s women have been busy finalising three of their trophy events. Meredith Pengelly won the final of the Ngutunui Cup, while the Roma Maughan Tray went to Denise Goile. Pengelly finished the Cup competition all square on par. Goile topped the try field with a score of three down.Goile

was in the limelight again winning the final of the Papesh Rosebowl over Patti MacIntyre. The ladies’ day scramble was won by Bev Parsons with 2-up, from P. MacIntyre, J. Reakes, B. Staples all on -1. Division II was won by Jill Webber (all square), from N. Graham, D. Goile on -1. Longest putt: J. Webber.

Hukanui XIII extinguish Firehawks

G R E AT D E A L S in

Second placed Hukanui upset Te Awamutu Sports Firehawks 26-16 — ending their unbeaten run spanning 16 games in Waikato premier reserve rugby league. Firehawks’ Ray Spooner made a welcome return, after five weeks sidelined with injury, to score two tries in Hamilton on Saturday. The team’s third try went to A. Waho, with H. Raukawa and I. Howell landing one conversion each. Without the services of three regular props due to illness and work commitments, assistant coach Warwick Ratima donned the Firehawks’ jersey again to play a vital role in stabilising the front row alongside Richard Hunapo. Hukanui scored a last minute try to blow their lead out from four to 10 points. The test for the Firehawks now is how well they respond to the loss. They have five remaining games (three against formidable opponents) in the round-robin before the semi-finals.

Club championship resurgence at SA A new format to encourage more members to enter the men’s strokeplay championships is proving successful at Stewart Alexander Golf Club. The change from 72-holes to the ‘best three out of four rounds’ counting for this year’s championships has worked wonders, resulting in increased numbers in most divisions. Participation in the championships had been on the decline for a number of years, mainly because of work commitments. Members can now miss a round and still be in contention for the various titles. Last year’s senior club champion Atutahi Te Ao holds a slender one

shot lead over Ash Robertson (on best two out of three rounds) going in to the final round this Sunday. Te Ao’s best two rounds are 72, 77 and Robertson 73, 77. Ian Froggatt (80, 82) and Grant Easton (80, 83) head the intermediates, Ben Mylchreest (83, 85) and Sam Clements-Stewart (83, 91) are the leading juniors, and Hugh Littlewood (91, 102) is the likely junior B winner. Young Mylchreest is also the leading junior (under-18s). Grant Easton won Sunday’s scramble, sponsored by Ace Lawnmowers, with 42 stableford, from N. Johnston, B. Downie 41, K. Hawtin 40, B. Mylchreest 39, A. Robertson, N. Oakes, J. Hollinshead 38, A. Te Ao, S. Ashford, S. Hill, W. King 37.

Mixed Bowers Cup bag Te Awamutu recorded a win and a loss on Bowers Concrete Cup under-45kg rugby tournament opening day at Matamata. The Wayne Annan coached Te Awamutu team lost 30-7 to Hamilton Gold, after trailing 12-7 at halftime, and beat Morrinsville 24-10 at Bedford Park on Sunday. Cameron Petch scored a try, converted by Josh Malpas, against Hamilton Gold, while try scorers against Morrinsville were Ropata Taitoko, Hamish Sheridan and Daniel Henderson (2). Zak Gibson converted two of the tries.

‘‘The loss to Hamilton Gold showed the players the intensity required and us coaches what improvements were needed to turn the team into a competitive outfit,’’ says Annan. ‘‘There is a good quantity of skilled players around at the moment and I’m looking forward to seeing them go on to higher honours in the future.’’ The tournament is played over three consecutive Sundays. Te Awamutu host Matamata at Albert Park, 11am, this Sunday. Closing day takes place at Morrinsville on August 10, with Te Awamutu playing Ham-

COGS netballers in zone BY COLIN THORSEN COGS Inzone overcame cold, wet conditions to beat College Senior B 40-32 in Te Awamutu Premier Reserve netball. The students started positively on Saturday at the Mangahoe Street courts, being on equal terms (10-all) at quarter time. The winning and losing of the game came in the quarters either side of halftime. COGS Inzone won the second quarter by four goals to lead 21-17 at halftime and the third quarter by seven goals to lead 34-23. College Senior B battled away admirably to take the final quarter by nine goals to six. It was COGS Inzone’s third win from four games in the championship round. They also picked up a bonus point from their only loss of the round, getting within three goals of the unbeaten Tigers Royale, 38-35. All teams in premier reserve to E grade have three games remaining in the round-robin before the semi-finals on August 23 and finals day on August 30. There are three unbeaten teams at the halfway stage of the premier grade championship — last year’s winners OSC Bailey Ingham Wanderers, COGS I and RSN Henry Morgan Builders. The latter two of the above teams meet in a top-of-the-table clash at ASB Stadium at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre tonight, starting at 6.30pm. Marist one win away from final at Waikato Stadium

TC290708CT01

SLICK SERVICE: Kihikihi evergreen halfback Greg Te Huia passes under pressure from his Marist opposite number Richard McCandlish. passing in field for the halfback to bolt 20 metres to the line. Kihikihi stormed back, putting pressure on the Marist line but were denied any points. Marist finished the game in style with a try to centre Bill Ngauma after he caught the Kihikihi defence off guard. Pryor converted two of the second half tries. Coach Shane Crutchley would have been proud of his forward pack up against a bigger Kihikihi unit — particularly in light of the fact that he had three

of his usual starting forwards out injured. The Marist forwards played as a pack, creating crucial turn overs with superb driving play. Backs to shine were wing Daniel Curren, along with Ohutu and fullback Taurean McGurther. Ohutu was the Woolys Restaurant and Bar player of the day. Marist are home this week to Ngaruawahia at 2.40pm. When these two teams last met in the second round of the com-

petition, Marist won a close encounter 6-0. Local rugby buffs are being encouraged to turn out Saturday in support of Marist, helping them cash in on the home ground advantage. It promises to be an absorbing semi-final clash. The winner goes through to the final at Waikato Stadium on August 8, featuring in the curtainraiser to the Air New Zealand Cup match between Waikato and Tasman. Hamilton Old Boys play Te Akau in the other semi-final.

Te Awamutu Marist secured a berth in the Waikato second division rugby semi-finals with an emphatic 29-0 win over Kihikihi. The Murray Gane Plumbing sponsored Marist side had to weather a storm of attacks from the visitors in the first 10 minutes playing into a strong wind at Marist Park on Saturday. The Marist forwards got their hands on more ball in the second quarter, driving their way down field with the rain and wind in their faces. Dion Pryor missed two penalty attempts into a gusty wind before Marist’s nuggety halfback Bryce McCandlish drove over from a maul to score. Pryor converted for a 7-0 lead after 35 minutes. Pryor was on target again with a penalty on halftime for 10-0 scoreline at the break. Marist used the wind to better advantage in the second half than Kihikihi did. Nippy second five Cory Ohutu scored after 20 minutes, cutting back in field and beating a couple of would-betacklers to dot down under the posts. McCandlish’s second try stemmed from wing Cody Bowen making a telling break up the touch line, drawing the last line of defence and
