Driving in Italy

Munich 4‐5hrs

All valid UK driving licences should be accepted in Italy. This includes the older all‐green style UK licences, although the European Commission appreciates that these may be more difficult for Europeans to understand and that drivers should update them before travelling abroad, if time permits. Application form D750 is available from most Post Offices. See 'European Motoring Advice' at www.bit.ly/DrivingInTheEU by the AA. Warning triangles are compulsory ‐ It is recommended that visitors equip their vehicles with a warning triangle, a set of replacement bulbs. Motorcycles under 150cc are not allowed on motorways. Any vehicle with overhanging load (e.g. carrying bicycle at rear) must display a reflective square panel. Fluorescent jackets must also be carried and worn in the event of an accident. Snow Chains are highly reccommended ‐ In some parts of Germany, France and Austria it is required by law to carry snow chains or have winter tyres. It is highly reccommended to carry snow chains if you are self driving. These can be added to your booking if you are hiring a car.

Insurance Documents ‐ Make sure you take your insurance documents with you (Travel and Motor). It is compulsory to have third party motor insurance. It is also compulsory to carry your motor insurance in your car along with your driving licence. Lights ‐ use of dipped headlights during the day is now compulsory outside built‐up areas. Dipped headlights are also compulsory when passing through tunnels irrespective of their length or lighting. Italian signs ‐ generally don't indicate cardinal direction (N/S/E/W) or road (SS 7, etc.), but rather which major towns they lead to. Thus, it is useful to know roughly what towns are in what direction. For example, Belluno and Cortina are north of Venice, so if you want to go north, follow the signs for Belluno or Cortina. Drinking and driving ‐ If the level of alcohol in the bloodstream is 0.051 per cent or more, severe penalties include fines, confiscation of vehicle and imprisonment. Drivers with less than three years driving experience, the alcohol limit is zero, it is prohibited. Fines ‐ On‐the‐spot. Fines are particularly heavy for speeding offences. The police can impose the fine and collect 1 quarter of the maximum fine, and must give a receipt for the amount of the fine paid. Serious offences include speeding, going through a red light etc. Illegally parked vehicles can be clamped or towed away and a fine imposed. Speed limits ‐ Standard legal limits, which may be varied by signs, for private vehicles without trailers: In built‐up areas 31mph (50km/h), outside built‐up areas 55mph (90km/h) on ordinary roads, 68mph (110km/h) on dual carriageways and 80mph (130km/h) on motorways.

Driving Directions, Hints & Tips Directions From Venice Marco Polo & Treviso Airports To Arabba, Corvara & Badia 1. If driving from Treviso Airport, go to Instruction No. 7. If driving from Venice Marco Polo, on leaving the airport, get into the right‐hand lane and go to instruction 2. 2. At airport exit, turn right and prepare to get into left‐hand lane. You should follow the green sign 'AUTOSTRADE' (also signed in blue to TREVISO). 3. After a few hundred metres, get into the left‐hand lane and at the traffic lights turn left, signposted in green 'AUTOSTRADE'. 4. Once through the traffic lights, your only task is to follow signs to BELLUNO. You'll see the Dolomites in the distance on a clear day. 5. After about 10 km, you will arrive at the tolls. Approach these in any lane NOT MARKED TELEPASS or VIACARD. No money required at this point ‐ just press the red button and take a ticket, which you will present on leaving the motorway at Belluno. 6. Now go to Instruction No. 12. 7. From Treviso Airport ‐ On leaving the car hire car park opposite Treviso Airport, turn left. You will immediately arrive at some traffic lights, where you should turn right. 8.You are now on the Treviso ring‐road. Follow this for about 3 km until you come to a roundabout, at which you will go straight on over the fly‐over. This roundabout is currently being replaced by a fly‐over but we are not sure when this will be completed. 9. Shortly after the roundabout (or fly‐over!), turn right following the green 'AUTOSTRADE' sign to VENEZIA. 10. After a short distance, you will arrive at another roundabout, where you will turn right. You will immediately arrive at the tollbooths for the motorway. Approach these in any lane NOT MARKED TELEPASS or VIACARD. 11. No money required here ‐ just press the red button, take a ticket, which you will present on leaving the motorway at Belluno. Follow the signs for Belluno, which is now about 65km away. 12. On arriving at the Belluno end of the motorway, approach the tolls in one of the lanes furthest right. Cost approx. € 5,10. 13. Immediately after the tolls, you will enter a tunnel,at the end of which is the exit to Belluno.Keep following signs to Belluno. 14. After about 3 or 4kms, you will arrive at a junction with traffic lights where BELLUNO is signposted both straight on and also to the right. It is a few hundred yards past the Q8 garage, which you will pass on the right. Turn right at the traffic lights following signs to BELLUNO NORD, immediately going over a bridge. 15. Follow the road for not even 2km, getting into the left‐hand lane just after an AGIP petrol station on your right. 200m beyond are some traffic lights, where you will turn left. This left turn is signposted to BELLUNO & AGORDO. 16.You are now heading towards the centre of Belluno on a main road that eventually becomes flanked by warehouses and big out‐of‐town shops. (Self‐caterers might want to stop here to do a pre‐holiday shop ‐ look out for the hypermarket Emisfera on your right). 17.From this point, you should follow signs to AGORDO. After about 5 km,when almost at the centre of Belluno, AGORDO will be signposted off to the right where the road forks. (The fork is controlled by traffic lights). 18. 1km later having crossed quite a spectacular bridge, you will arrive at a crossroads with traffic lights, where you should turn right. You are now on your way to Agordo, which is about 35km from Belluno. Agordo is a charming little town and a good place to stop for a drink and a leg stretch. From Agordo, it will take about 45 mins to get to Arabba. This road is the SS203. 19. Continue on the road through Agordo (and then the lakeside town of Alleghe) following signs to CAPRILE. 20. In Caprile (3km after Alleghe), turn right towards ARABBA in centre of the village (it is well signed ‐ 21kms to go) Follow the signs and windy roads up to ARABBA. 21. Driving Directions, Hints & Tips From Milan, Bergamo, Brescia & Verona Airports To Arabba, Corvara & Badia 1. Ultimately you need to make your way to the A22 motorway that goes north from just west of Verona to Trento, Bolzano, the Brenner Pass and into Austria. 2. If you are driving from Milan, Bergamo or Brescia, simply get onto the A4 motorway that goes west/east from Milan to Venice. You will probably be following signs to Verona or perhaps Padova, Venezia (Venice) & Trieste too. When looking to get onto a motorway, watch out for green road signs and the word 'AUTOSTRADA'. 3. If you are in good time, the weather is good and you enjoy driving you can also take the SS45 which heads north just after Brescia and flanks the west coast of Lake Garda before giving you access to the A22 motorway at Trento. If you are driving from Verona Airport the A22 motorway is well signed from the airport and not very far either ‐ follow green motorway signs to Brennero (May also be signed to Rovereto,Trento and/or Bolzano). 4. Once on the A22 motorway, which, like the A4 is a toll road, head north past TRENTO until the junction for ORA/AUER.This junction is almost midway between Trento and Bolzano ‐ in fact, a little nearer Bolzano. The junction may also be signed to Cavalese. 5. Leave the motorway here and join the SS48, following signs to Cavalese. This is, in fact, the Great Dolomites Road and it takes you to Arabba via the Val di Fassa and the towns of Predazzo, Moena, Pozza, Campitello and Canazei, where you are 22kms from Arabba. From Canazei, you will ascend to the Pordoi Pass amidst spectacular mountain scenery, drive through the pass, 9kms after which you will descend into Arabba. If your destination is Pedraces Badia or Corvara, see Instruction No. 8. 6. Follow the road towards the village centre. Before you get there, you will see the Sport Hotel on your right. Go to page 5 for directions to our meeting point in Arabba. 7. In Arabba, turn left just past the church, following signs to CORVARA ‐ go through Corvara (10kms from Arabba & 6kms from BADIA) if you are staying in Corvara, go to page 6 for directions to Chalet Verena, our resort office. If you are staying in Badia follow the road through CORVARA, then LA VILLA and soon you will arrive in BADIA. Now turn to Page 7 for directions to Haus Valentin. Driving Directions, Hints & Tips Directions From Calais & Munich Airport To Arabba, Corvara & Badia 1. If you are driving from Munich, go straight to Instruction No. 2. If driving from Calais or other North Sea ports, we usually drive to Munich by motorway via the following cities ‐ Brussels, Liege, Aachen, Koln, Frankfurt,Wurzburg & Nuremburg. (If you prefer French motorways and don't mind paying the tolls, Munich via Reims, Strasbourg Karlsruhe and Stuttgart is an attractive alternative ‐ in fact this is the route reccommended by AA Autoroute). We recommend overnighting somewhere in Germany to break up your journey. 2. Once at Munich, follow signs to Salzburg until you pick up signs to INNSBRUCK, which should then override any signs to Salzburg. 3. About an hour south of Munich and shortly before the Austrian border, there are some motorway services called INNTAL. They are recommended. The facilities are clean and the food is good. Here you can also purchase your Austrian motorway toll 'sticker'... and enjoy a walk round the lake. Austria's motorways are subject to toll. As in Switzerland, motorway drivers are now required to display a 'toll' sticker (or ‘vignette’) on their windscreen ‐ they can be bought at German motorway service stations near the Austrian border. Prices ‐ 10 day sticker ‐ approx. €10.60 ‐ 2 month sticker ‐ approx.€25.80 (Subject to change). 4. You will cross the Austrian border at Kufstein, pass Innsbruck about 50 minutes later ‐ keep following signs for the BRENNER PASS or BRENNERO but don’t leave the motorway, you will then arrive at the Europabrucke tollbooth (at the start of the ascent to the Brenner Pass). Here you will be required to pay the equivalent of about £7.00 (€9.00, Euros and credit cards are accepted). 5. Once through the Brenner Pass and its largely redundant border control area, you are in Italy and after a few downhill kilometres you will arrive at an Italian motorway tollbooth. No money is required here, as you will pay on leaving the motorway. Just take a ticket. 6. You will leave the motorway after about 20 mins. at the junction signposting ‐ VAL PUSTERIA, BRESSANONE, BRUNICO. (N.B. All place names in the South Tyrol are signposted in both Italian and German so you will also see the above as follows ‐ Pustertal, Brixen & Bruneck). 7.At the kiosk, you will be required to pay approx. €4.20. 8. Now follow signs to BRUNICO / BRUNECK ‐ you are on the SS49. You will follow the Brunico road for about 30km and when only 3km short of Brunico, you will turn right onto the SS244. It is signposted to either CORVARA, GADERTAL or ALTA BADIA ‐ either way, it is in the village of San Lorenzo and is immediately after an attractive wooden pedestrian bridge, which crosses a river running alongside the road. You are now 42km from Arabba and about 28kms from Pedraces. (Self‐caterers, who would like to do a pre‐holiday shop, should ignore this right hand turn to Corvara and continue along the road following signs to Brunico, as if driving to Brunico itself. After about 2kms on the outskirts of the town shortly after a roundabout, you will see a supermarket on the right called SUPERTIP ‐ opposite the Shell petrol station). 9. There is currently the possibility of a diversion along this road, as a huge tunnel building programme has recently been completed. If you are diverted, it will be at least picturesque and well signposted. Simply follow the signs saying UMLEITUNG/DEVIAZIONE. After a few miles, it will bring you back onto the SS244 and after a further few miles of hairpins etc. you will come into Pedraces Badia (also signposted as Abtei Badia). 10. We should be grateful if you would report to our office (regardless of where you are staying) at any time after 2pm on the day of your arrival. If there happens to be no one there, we might be showing other new arrivals into their accommodation. Someone will return to the office soon. There is a small amount of paperwork to be done, so please have your passports ready. 11. If you are destined for Arabba or Corvara go to Instruction No. 12. If your destination is Badia go to page 7 for directions to Haus Valentin. 12. Follow the road through Badia, and then La Villa, taking you in to Corvara (see Page 6 for directions to Chalet Verena). For Arabba continue on and up to the CAMPOLONGO PASS (not the Gardena Pass), (where you will pass from the South Tyrol into the Veneto), from here you will drop down into Arabba. Now turn to Page 5 for directions to ourmeeting point in Arabba. Suggested 2 Day route via Gasthof Krone www.bit.ly/CalaisToTheDolomites ‐ Google Maps

Driving Directions, Hints & Tips Directions to Chalet Haus Valentin in Badia

Munich 4‐5hrs

Innsbruck 2hrs

Badia ‐ Chalet Haus Valentin sits just above Badia village centre. Turn in to Via Runcac. It is not obvious to you that this is Via Runcac, but the turning in question is just past the Tourist office (on your left if you are travelling north). If coming south, it is the first turning on the right once you are in the village (opposite the Hotel Dolomia and a small collection of shops with a parking area in front). It rises quite steeply and there is a large yellow sign to lots of hotels and guesthouses ‐ although Haus Valentin is not actually mentioned on this sign. Follow this road round to the left and all the way along to the end, over a couple of sleeping policemen, where you will see Haus Valentin, home of our resort office in Pedraces Badia.
