Aviation Broward’s aviation industry is a multibilliondollar network including the airlines, general aviation, airports, airframe and engine manufacturers, component parts suppliers, allied industries such as banking and insurance, and government agencies. For every pilot and mechanic job in the aviation industry, there are 100 support positions in operations and management. Currently, 39,500 people are employed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) or work at businesses that support it. The annual economic impact is estimated to be $2.6 billion. Since its humble beginnings with grass runways, the airport has grown into a modern transportation complex that over the years has served more than 300 million travelers. One of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers – Brazil’s Embraer – operates two regional customer support facilities around the world: in Fort Lauderdale near FLL and Le Bourget, France.

Manufacturing Broward is home to more than 1,500 manufacturing companies, whose products include airplane parts, medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic tools, vitamins, jewelry, yachts, newspapers, concrete, computers and software. Many Broward manufacturers serve the commercial and residential construction sector –regionally, nationally and internationally. Two examples include Arch Aluminum and Glass of Tamarac, and Hollywood Woodwork. Arch Aluminum and Glass is one of Broward County’s largest manufacturers. With over 22 plants in more than a dozen states employing more than 1,600 people, Arch Aluminum pursues a market strategy of customizing almost everything it makes. Hollywood Woodwork is a high-end custom manufacturer of wood interiors, whose work is visible in leading hotels and resorts in Florida and the Caribbean. Clients include the Four Seasons Miami, Mandarin Oriental Miami, The Breakers in Palm Beach, Citrix headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, and the Miami Dolphins training facility in Davie. In addition to construction-based manufacturing companies, Broward continues to be home to an eclectic mix of manufacturers covering almost every major industry. Some examples include: • Cellular phones (Motorola has a major manufacturing facility in Plantation) • Food processing (R.L. Schreiber of Pompano Beach, makers and packagers of
spices and soup starter kits) • Military contracts (Point Blank Body Armor of Oakland Park, makers of bullet proof vests) • Health care (Home Diagnostics of Fort Lauderdale, a leader in diabetes management and blood glucose monitoring systems) • Clothing (Otabo of Pompano Beach, makers of fine custom shoes)

billion, according to the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF). It is one of Broward’s largest industries and employment sectors creating more than 134,000 jobs and representing $3.7 billion in wages and earnings. Broward County ranks third in the state in the total number of registered vessels, with more than 45,000 vessels cruising its 300 miles of navigable waterways and Atlantic shores. Boaters recognize Broward County as an internationally renowned port of call for megayachts as well as smaller vessels cruising or sailing the Caribbean and North American destinations. More than 1,400 megayachts (vessels measuring 80-feet or more) visit the county each year – and each visit generates an estimated $400,000 economic impact through boatyard and marina expenditures, purchases and related services from businesses that serve the marine industry. International megayacht crews benefit from Broward’s excellent crew training schools to upgrade their skills while in port. Broward’s marine industry encompasses manufacturing, marine products: wholesale and retail, dockage and every conceivable type of marine service. Boaters come to Broward year round for sun, fun, outfitting, refits and repairs, and provisioning. The 20

Technology Broward enjoys a warm climate for technology companies. From a large pool of skilled workers and educational institutions, to financial incentives and support, technology is a growing part of the state, regional and county economies. According to the American Electronics Association’s 2007 Cyberstates Report, Florida was the second fastest growing state in technology industry employment. In addition to strong employment growth, Florida also experienced an increase in both technology exports and venture capital investments. Tech exports, which represent 33 percent of Florida’s total exports, grew by $1.5 billion in 2005, the largest increase in the nation. Venture capital investments in Florida also grew by 23 percent in 2005.

Tourism With 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and a year round temperature average of 77 degrees, it’s no wonder that tourism is one of Broward County’s hottest industries. Beaches, golf, boating and shopping are among the favorite activities of leisure visitors. Many business travelers come for events at the 600,000 square-foot Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center at Port Everglades, the centerpiece of a mixed-use retail complex covering 33 acres. In 2006, Broward welcomed 10.35 million visitors, a 2% increase over 2005. The county’s average hotel occupancy was 73.5 percent with an average daily room rate of $114.26. The industry employs more than 112,000 workers, and has a collective economic impact of more than $8.7 billion according to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. Broward has more than 600 lodging establishments, with 33,400 hotel rooms, ranging from luxurious high-rises to smaller boutique motels. There are also more than 4,000 restaurants in Broward. Broward County enjoys the benefits of a highly diverse population, with a strong flow of newcomers from throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America and Europe. Recent figures indicate that the county’s population is 70 percent white, 24 percent African American and 6 percent Asian or “other.” But one of the most important demographic trends is the growing number of Hispanics (of any race), who now constitute more than 20 percent of the population. Broward’s strong Hispanic base is an important workforce asset for international companies doing business in the Americas. SOURCE: U.S. Census Bureau (2006 Data Profile)
