“The Use of Inhibitors of Mechanosensitive Ion Channels as Local Inhibitors of Peripheral Pain”. The major goal is to gain understanding of how mechanical stress activates mechaosensitive ion channels in nerve and how GsMTx4 and related peptides can suppress that response. I am a Sub-Investigator. The total grant is $1.3 million. International Service What is now Kaleida, entered into a partnership with the University Klinikal Center, Tuzla, Bosnia, to assist the latter to re-build its medical system. My involvement began in 1996 with the arrival of the first of two Bosnian Neurosurgical Residents. After the partnership was concluded in 1998, I continued to work with the Department of Neurosurgery and will continue that work as my health and energy permit. 1996 - 1998: Partnership agreement with support from the United States Agency for International Development. 1996 - June 1997: Dr. Mirsad Hadzic spent 6 months in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University at Buffalo. I coordinated his visit and clinical work. July – December 1997: Dr. Zlatko Ercegovic spent 6 months in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University at Buffalo. I coordinated his visit and clinical work. September 26 – October 1, 1998: I traveled to Tuzla with other Kaleida professionals. With the USAID, I solicited donations of surgical equipment for the Department of Neurosurgery, Tuzla. The most important piece of equipment was a stereotactic frame. While in Tuzla, I taught the Neurosurgeons, Scrub Techs and Radiologists how to use the frame. I did 2 operations using the frame, teaching Drs. Hodzic and Ercegovic. The closing ceremony of the Partnership was held during the trip to Tuzla. April 15 – May 10, 2001: I arranged for and financed a visit to Buffalo for Dr. Hodzic. He worked daily in the Department of Neurosurgery learning new operative techniques. May 9 - 12, 2002: I was invited to speak at the 1st Bosnia and Herzegovina Congress of Neurology. This was the 1st Medical Meeting held in Tuzla since the war. I also brought more donated surgical equipment and instructed surgeons and staff in its use. I provided consultation to Dr. Haun Brkic, Chairman of Neurosurgery, Tuzla. This resulted in a strategic Neurosurgical Development plan in Tuzla. We identified Carotid Endartesectomy as the next operative preocedure to be developed, due to their high-incidence of carotid atheroscleorsis. July 2004: I was an invited speaker at “Summer University”, Tuzla University Medical Center. I brought my partner, Dr. Jim Budny with me since he is an expert in carotid artery surgery. Dr. Budny worked with the surgeons, and I worked with the O.R. staff, Radiology, Neurology, and the Director of the Klinikal Center to prepare for the new cerebrovascular program. April 2005: Dr. Budny, Dr. Stockton and myself went to Tuzla. Several carotid endarterectomies were done by Drs. Budny, Hodzic and Ercegovic with EEG monitoring done by Dr. Stockton. I, again, worked with the Klinikal Director and Chairman of Neurosurgery on long-range planning, including the build-out of their new hospital. March – May 2007: Dr. Hodzic secured a traveling Fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and Dr. Ercegovic was supported by the Department of Neurosurgery, SUNY at 32

Buffalo. They spent 3 months on the clinical services of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Women and Children’s Hospital, Spinal Surgery (primarily) at Millard Fillmore Gates Hosopital, and Functional Neurosurgery at Buffalo General Hospital. In addition, they spent time at Roswell Park Cancer Institute to be introduced to Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Dr. Hodzic worked with Dr. Stockton to learn how to use a portable monitor, which was purchased with funds from a private foundation and myself. November 2007: Dr. Hodzic became Chairman of Neurosurgery in Tuzla. November 2009: I was invited to the opening ceremony of their new hospital. I gave multiple lectures and worked with Dr. Hodzic and the Clinical Director to plan 2 new areas of collaboration; Spasticity Management and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. These 2 projects are on-going. I am working with the 2 companies who make the necessary equipment. My partners and I will supply the clinical training.
