Dr. Nivet presents diversity as a mark of excellence How does an organization measure its excellence? Diversity should be one marker—especially in health education organizations, according to Dr. Marc Nivet. Dr. Nivet, who is chief diversity officer for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), was the Allen College Office of Diversity Services (ODS) featured presenter on April 26. Dr. Nivet spoke on “Health Workforce Diversity: From Theory to Practice.” Approximately 125 people attended the event, which included Allen College staff and faculty; Allen Hospital and College advisory boards; Hospital and College diversity advisory committees; and representatives from partners such as Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Educational Talent Search and UNI Classic Upward Bound. “We invited Dr. Nivet to speak because he is considered one of the leading experts on how to champion diversity as a marker of excellence,” said Doreen Mingo, Allen College assistant professor and ODS director. “Allen College is seriously committed to increasing the diversity in our healthcare programs, especially nursing.” Striving to refashion diversity ideals, Dr. Nivet presented diversity as an enhancement of excellence. He also framed diversity as the connection between the community and healthcare. Dr. Nivet encouraged the audience to break diversity free of its constraints and utilize it in talent management and health equity. Applying diversity to these areas, Nivet said, will ultimately transform the organization and then the community. His presentation was especially relevant to Allen College, Mingo said. “Dr. Nivet was able to bring to the forefront real-life examples of the importance of measuring and changing the institutional climate to attract more diverse individuals,” she said. “He highlighted the importance of some of our grassroots efforts to not only attract these students but also to create systems to ensure they are supported and attain success once they arrive on campus.” Through his leadership of the AAMC Diversity Policy and Programs department, Dr. Nivet focuses on ideas created to advance healthcare equity and increase diversity in medical education. Dr. Nivet and his staff regulate activities and analyze policies related to diversity, assist medical schools and teaching hospitals on diversity, and serve as spokespeople for diversity. His visit helped attendees learn more about the rationale behind Allen College’s commitment to building pipeline programs in this community to help yield a more diverse pool of applicants—from which the College can build its student body to mold the healthcare workforce of the future. Presentations such as Dr. Nivet’s help the ODS further its mission by: ALLEN COLLEGE

• Increasing the education and knowledge of those on the front lines working to create inclusive environments at the College • Invigorating and empowering College and Hospital staff working in our community to create pipeline programs • Helping faculty and staff encourage Dr. Marc Nivet groups historically underrepresented in nursing—like men, minorities and students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds—to consider nursing and other allied health professions “Our commitment to this vision demonstrates Allen College’s continued dedication to be among the leading educational institutions in the state of Iowa,” Mingo said.

New Allen College programs New programs for the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHS) degree at Allen College have been approved. The completion program for dental hygienists (BHS-DH) and the major in public health (BHS-PH) were passed by the College Board of Trustees and the Iowa Coordinating Council for Post-High School Education. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) approved the programs after conducting a peer review. Now, Allen College is searching for a director for each program. “Once we find our directors, we will begin hiring faculty, offering programs and recruiting students,” said Dr. Nancy Kramer, Allen College vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of nursing. On October 4th Allen College received formal notification of the action taken by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) regarding our request to initiate two new graduate programs. The College was granted permission to begin a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) and a Doctor of Education for Health Professions Education (EdD-HPE). Start dates for both programs are subject to hiring qualified directors. Both programs will be housed in the School of Health Sciences. Interviews have begun for the EdD director position; qualified applications have been received for the MOT, for which interviews will begin soon. It is anticipated that the EdD program would admit students to begin in fall 2014 and the MOT program would admit students to begin in fall 2015. 1

The Growth of Online Education at Allen College The delivery of courses and entire academic programs has greatly changed as the result of ever-evolving technology that makes it possible for colleges to connect to students living in a distant state or country. A recent survey of 2,800 chief academic officers and academic leaders found that the proportion of students taking at least one class online rose to 32.1 percent in 2011. The 2012 Survey of Online Learning reveals that the number of students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 6.7 million. This survey also found that 77 percent of academic leaders rate the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face contexts. Several factors have led to the continuing growth of online learning: advancements in learningenabling technologies (e.g., Internet access/connectivity); consumers’ increasing level of comfort in using technology for a range of functions, including education; the need by many individuals to acquire new skills in a rapidly changing economy; greater familiarity with and acceptance of online learning by faculty and college administrators; and the desire of college leaders to attract new students from previously underserved markets.

Healthcare runs in Dorothy (Dottie) Plager’s family. Her husband, Dr. Vern Plager, was an obstetrician/gynecologist and practiced in Waterloo for 27 years. Before they moved to Waterloo, Dottie practiced nursing in Detroit. Three of the Plagers’ five children are nurses—two of whom graduated from Allen College. Dottie later demonstrated her continued commitment to area healthcare through two volunteer terms, or six years, on the Allen Foundation board. “ Healthcare professionals are kind and generous and compassionate, and they love what they’re doing,” Dottie said. “ Especially nurses. They don’t like to see people suffer, so they reach out. It takes a special kind of person.”

Allen College has embraced online teaching and learning in a number of its current and planned academic programs. By delivering entire programs online, Allen College can serve nursing and health science students living at a distance from our campus and provide them with the education they need to advance their careers. Currently students can complete several of our programs online with only a few visits to campus. These programs include the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), three tracks in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program, the registered nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) program, and the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program. Newly approved programs in public health, dental hygiene and health professions education will be delivered online as well. Still other programs at Allen College are “hybrid” in nature, such as the licensed practical nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (LPN to BSN) program, which offers a mixture of online learning and campus visits. Other programs may have only one or two courses that are offered online.

Family is committed to healthcare and education

After her husband’s death in 1987, Dottie chose to honor his memory by establishing the Dr. Vernon H. Plager Scholarship at Allen College. The general nursing scholarship is open to all students. “I wanted to honor Vern, and OB was the love of his life,” Dottie said. “He loved to bring those babies into the world.”

Dr. Jerry Durham, Chancellor

The College has developed a partnership with the University of Northern Iowa that provides a robust online course delivery system. This partnership also allows for faculty development in online teaching. The College employs two full-time experts who work with faculty and students to attain success in navigating online technology. Finally, Allen College has committed to ensuring that its online courses are of the highest quality by adapting the “Quality Matters” program, a leader in quality assurance for online education, recognized for its peer-based approach to continuous improvement in online education and student learning. While online education was once viewed as a “disruptor” in higher education, it now has become an increasingly accepted part of the educational landscape and is here to stay.

When the Plagers moved to Waterloo in 1960, there were three hospitals, and Vern delivered at all three, Dottie said. “But when he got too busy, he chose to deliver only at Allen Hospital. Then, it was just one small building that had been built on donated land. And now, every time I go by there, I am amazed at how large it has grown.” Vern also taught OB at Allen College until his death. He worked a lot of nights and weekends, but he made sure he was home for dinner with his family almost every night.

Dottie and Dr. Vern Plager Doctors were much more hands-on with their patients in the past, Dottie said. OBs stayed with mothers from delivery through discharge. She marvels at the many ways healthcare changed over the course of her husband’s career and throughout her lifetime. “Nurses are taking the place of doctors now in many situations, so it’s more important than ever to support nursing education,” Dottie said. “We have a great need for healthcare in our country and in our world.” She’s especially proud to support Allen Hospital. “We have fine doctors and fine nurses, and all the latest equipment and technology,” Dottie said. “Almost every service is covered. I think it’s a wonderful facility for our community.”

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant supports nursing students Diversity at Allen College grows each year with continued support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) grant scholarships. After Allen College received another grant of $50,000, five students were each awarded $10,000 in scholarships.

Tangang was inspired to study nursing while growing up in a thirdworld country and seeing the need for affordable, urgent healthcare. This scholarship money will help her move toward working in critical care or in developing countries as a nurse practitioner.

Casey Huber, Kyle McCaslin, Thomas Panicucci, Sarah Schoon and Yvonne Tangang were selected to receive the five RWJF grants. They began the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in May 2013 and will complete the program in Aug. 2014. The RWJ Foundation awards grants to schools of nursing to create scholarships for students from groups typically underrepresented in nursing or who are at an economic disadvantage. This is the third year Allen College was given the opportunity to offer these scholarships. The RWJF program has helped expand Allen College’s male student population by giving students like Kyle McCaslin a financial boost. “To think that somebody chose to help me in reaching my goal of becoming a nurse is truly amazing and very humbling,” said McCaslin. Community: The CELL

Department News

Allen College students work to Strike Out Hunger More than two-thirds of Allen College students are active volunteers in Waterloo and the surrounding communities. This is encouraged by the Anne Christensen Doyle Center for Engagement, Learning and Leadership, or CELL. During the 2013 spring semester, the service honors students at Allen College organized the “Strikin’ Out Hunger Campaign” to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Students signed up in teams and partnered with the first- and third-grade students from the Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence in Waterloo to donate a minimum of 25 canned food items each. Taylor Cowell, who recently graduated from Allen College, took the lead in the campaign with varied roles, from facilitating communication and fundraising to setting deadlines and organizing prizes.

Allen College takes quality seriously Quality Matters is a program of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to ensure the level of quality in online classes remains a priority in education. Allen College aims to obtain Quality Matters certification for all online courses, as well as blended courses with online components.

“My favorite part of the campaign was seeing how many people we were able to get involved,” said Cowell. More than 150 students, staff and faculty members participated in the campaign and succeeded in surpassing their goal of 500 pounds of food. They collected 1,500 pounds of food—which provides enough to make 1,250 meals. The elementary classrooms collected 80 pounds of food. “It was such a great feeling knowing we were able to get so many students and faculty members involved to help the local food bank,” said Cowell. “I love knowing that, by exceeding our goal, we were able to help even more local families.”

“Allen College has a long-standing reputation for excellence in education,” said Dr. Nancy Kramer, vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of nursing. “Maintaining this reputation is essential for the college to continue recruiting and retaining wellqualified students, faculty and staff.”

The “Strikin’ Out Hunger Campaign” helped Allen College honor students log 345 hours of community service, including coordinating and carrying out the project. To celebrate, participating students were given T-shirts and invited to a night of bowling at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.

The award was presented by Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds on June 25, during the 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award recognition ceremony in Cedar Falls. Hundreds of volunteers are recognized each year, and Iowa ranks among the top three states in the nation for volunteering rates.

“Volunteerism is an important part of the state’s future and well-being,” said Governor Branstad’s statement. “I am honored to have the opportunity to recognize the people of our great state who continue the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor and work tirelessly to improve their communities.”

Office of Diversity Services (ODS) Nurse Camp staff spotlight: Wanda Martinez shares a passion for health Wanda Martinez, a former science teacher, is a familiar face at the Allen College Nurse Camp each summer. As a retired teacher, Martinez enjoys interaction with young people. “My passion lies in helping them to reach their full potential,” Martinez said. “I enjoy seeing students become more confident in their abilities.”

8

Martinez guided 2013 Nurse Camp students as they learned about the myriad opportunities in the healthcare field. With weekly field trips and guest speakers, students gained insights into healthcare as they discovered which areas appeal to them. Martinez believes students must understand that nurses perform their duties because they care about people. Nurse Camp gives students the chance to learn this from healthcare professionals and their own Nurse Camp experiences.

Although Quality Matters certification does not extend to offline classes, the standards can be used to improve the use of technology and accessibility in all courses at Allen College. Courses using the Quality Matters standards are examined by a team of reviewers to ensure the quality of the teaching and learning environment and promote continuous improvement of education. Allen College enrolled in a basic Quality Matters program during the 2011-2012 academic year. Since summer 2012, Allen College has become a full member of Quality Matters and is able to submit online and hybrid courses for review to be certified through Quality Matters. Faculty members are completing training to become certified master reviewers for Quality Matters.

Allen College awarded a 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award Since 1982, the Governor’s Volunteer Award (GVA) program has recognized individuals or organizations that have benefitted Iowans. Allen College was nominated for a group volunteer award by the Waterloo Community School District for participation in the Reading Buddies Program.

The HLC found Allen College a “hearty endorsement” for the adoption of Quality Matters. Allen College already offers one Quality Matters course, and two are in the process of gaining Quality Matters certification.

The strategic plan for implementing Quality Matters in Allen College affirms dedication to providing “educational programs of excellence.” “Adopting Quality Matters will improve student learning outcomes and retention while meeting the HLC criteria,” said Kramer.

Update from the School of Nursing • The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is undergoing evaluation for accreditation Oct. 16-18.

“Nursing is a field that cannot be driven by money as a major priority,” explained Martinez. “You must have a passion for your patients first.” Martinez said her favorite experience was seeing students graduate Nurse Camp. The students shine on graduation day, and they have the chance to share what they learned. She is looking forward to next year’s Nurse Camp and the challenge of inspiring a new group of students to work hard and uncover their potential.

• The first DNP students graduated in Aug. 2013. • Simulation use in undergraduate courses is increasing, and Allen College plans to expand the simulation laboratory to provide valuable learning experiences for students.

Students studied nursing abroad in Ecuador In May, a group of 10 students and two faculty members from Allen College traveled to Ecuador to assist with a healthcare clinic. The group stayed with host families while they experienced an appreciation for healthcare challenges.

The students worked with families and children to provide hiqh-quality, basic healthcare needs in urban and rural settings. CISabroad partnered with Allen College to provide this opportunity to students. Jacqueline Meyer, associate professor and assistant dean of graduate nursing programs, and professor Andrea Addington accompanied the students on their journey through Ecuador. The group traveled in a mobile healthcare unit to different markets to provide healthcare services for families and children in the city, and they traveled to a rural area to assist a local pediatrician. Ecuador was chosen because it offered experience in both urban and rural settings. “My trip to Ecuador through Allen College was truly the most blessed and heartwarming experience I have ever had,” said Natalie Friese, a participating student. “I not only had the opportunity to grow as an individual, but I grew greatly both as a community member and a future employee of the healthcare field.” The group also visited the beautiful Cúicocha Lake, walked the equator line and went on a shopping trip in the Otavalo Markets. “I think that the trip to Ecuador was an amazing educational opportunity, as well as an opportunity for each of us to grow personally,” said student Kelsey Kramer. “Seeing the type of healthcare the people of Ecuador have access to makes me put into perspective how lucky I am to be a citizen of the United States. The trip to Ecuador was amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to help people from different vulnerable populations.”
