Choose Schaumburg Township District Library from the drop-down menu

SEARCHING – You can do a quick search in the search box in the upper right hand corner of the screen, but to limit your selections to Kindle-compatible titles, select Advanced Search

You can search for a particular title or author. In addition, you can limit by the date a book was added to the site (between 7 days – 1 year), the subject (e.g. Mystery, Romance, Nonfiction), publishers, and awards.

The most important search field is All Formats, which allows you to limit to Kindle books.

You can also restrict your search to books that are currently available to check out by clicking the box Show only titles with copies available.

BORROWING AN EBOOK After you do your search, you will see a page of results. If the book is available to check out, the book icon in the upper right corner of the cover will be darkened. If the book icon is grayed out the book is checked out. NOTE: if you see a headphones icon on the book cover, this is an audiobook, not an eBook.

WISH LIST: If you are interested in reading a book, but don’t want to check it out or put it on hold now, you can add it to your wish list. Click on the bookmark at the bottom of the book – it will turn red, indicating that the book is now in your wish list. PLACING A BOOK ON HOLD: If the eBook you want to read is currently checked out, you can place it on hold. Click on the cover of the book you want to place on hold. You will see a page like the one on the left. Click on Place a Hold. The first time you place a hold, you will be asked to enter your email address. When the book is available to check out, you will receive an email and you will have 72 hours to check out the book. You can see how many patrons are on the holds list. In some cases your wait will be shorter, as there are copies available only to Schaumburg cardholders. Page 5 of 13

SETTING CHECKOUT LIMITS eBooks default to a 14 day checkout period. You can change the checkout period to 21 days by resetting your default lending options. To do so, click on your Account at the top of the screen, and then choose Settings For eBook, select 21 days. Click on Done, and then Save

CHECKING OUT AN EBOOK When you have decided on a book to check out, click on the cover. If the book is available to check out, you will see the Borrow button. Click on the button.

The book is then added to your Bookshelf. You are able to check out up to 5 items at one time. On the Bookshelf, you will see all the books you have checked out. Click on the Download button and then click on the box next to Kindle Book Click on Confirm & Download

NOTE: you are able to Return a book from your Bookshelf if you have not yet downloaded it. Once you select Confirm & Download, you will be taken to the Amazon.com website. You will see a renew button next to the title on the bookshelf.

You will then be prompted to fill in your email address and you will be added to the holds list. Once the eBook expires, you will receive an email notification that the title is available to retrieve from your Holds page. You will only be allowed to renew this title one time.

TRANSFERRING THE EBOOK TO YOUR KINDLE There are two methods of transferring eBooks to your Kindle: wirelessly or using a USB cable. Some eBooks can only be transferred by connecting your Kindle to your computer and manually transferring the file. You will see a red warning if the eBook can only be transferred using a USB cable.

You will then see a message such as the one below. The next time you connect to Wi-Fi and sync your device the book will appear on your device or app for you to read.

If you want to deliver the eBook to another device or app, return the book before the expiration date or delete from your library, click on Manage Your Kindle and choose an option from the Actions drop-down menu.

DOWNLOADING ON THE APP You have three choices when downloading an eBook on the app. 1) You can follow the same steps as indicated above, choosing the Kindle version of the eBook, and go to the Amazon.com website to complete the download process. In this case, the eBook will appear on your carousel on the Kindle home page and not on the app itself. 2) Instead of choosing the Kindle version of the eBook, select the ePub format. You will be asked to confirm this is the format you want. Click Confirm. The eBook will then download to the app itself. 3) You can also read the book in your browser. Choose the Read button and the book will open in a new page. In order to move back and forth between the MyMediaMall site and where your books are downloaded, you will click either on an icon that looks like three squares on top of each other or the OverDrive Media Console logo. Clicking on one of those icons will give you the option to either Get Books – which will take you to MyMediaMall where you will search for eBooks – or Bookshelf – which will take you to a list of the books you’ve downloaded.
