1.0 - WELCOME 1.1 - Your audio guide: Thanks very much for choosing this MP3 city guide to Prague. If you've already done any of our other walks you'll know how it works but if not, I'll tell you now. As you've probably already noticed, each of these sections of the walk that you've downloaded on to your machine has a name - this first one is Wenceslas Square. Just consider each of these walks as individual tracks on an 'album' which is the complete tour of Prague. You'll hear directions about where to go next at the end of each section but the route and the stopping points are also marked on your map which is in section 2.0 of this Printed Guide. When you get to a stopping point find somewhere to stand or sit which is out of the way of people and traffic and then play the next section of the walk. At some sites we'll suggest you walk while we talk so that you can start making your way to next stop on the tour. The map has been especially produced to help you find your way while you're listening to the audio guide which means that it's not drawn exactly to scale. Top tip: When you print out this Printed Guide or, at least, the map, set your printer to high quality or fine print so that the map is as clear as possible and easy to read. Please take care when you're using the audio guide: Prague is relatively safe city but do keep an eye out for pick pockets and watch out when you're crossing the road. When we get to a museum, palace or church, after I've described it you might want to go in or you might want to buy a ticket for later if it looks crowded. Or you might just want to carry on and come back and visit it afterwards now that you know where it is.

Top tip: Play a few sections of the tour on your MP3 player or iPod before you go just to check that they've downloaded properly. 1.2 - Your Printed Guide This printed guide complements your audio guide. We know that exploring a city can take more than one visit - and possibly even a life time so we've pared our guide down to what we think are the essential things to see and do. They're included in section 4.0 The Hit List. We've done our best to get it right and, because we're an internet based guide rather than a conventional guide book, we can update our information very quickly. That said, many places change their opening times at very short notice so please accept our apologies if you arrive somewhere and, despite what we've said, you find it's shut. As with your audio guide, if you find that something - museum, gallery, church, bar or restaurant - is not as we've described it then please do let us know by contacting us at [email protected]

3.0 - GETTING AROUND 3.1 - From the airport: To get into town by public transport take the 119 bus which leaves from the bus station in front of the terminal and goes to Dejvicka metro station at the end of Line A. Buy tickets for the entire journey - bus and metro - from the public transport desk (Dopravni podnik DPP) in the Arrivals hall. Buses depart about every 10 minutes and the journey to Dejvicka station takes about 20 - 30 minutes. The cost is about 20 Czech Crowns (about 50 pence.) A taxi from the airport to the Old or New Town takes about 30 minutes and costs about 650 Czech Crowns (£15 sterling). You're advised to check the fare before setting off. Airport website www.csl.cz/en 3.2 - Bus, tram and metro:

Most of Prague is walkable but the public transport system is very good. Buy tickets for bus, tram and metro from your hotel, from underground stations and from some shops and tobacconists. There are two types of ticket both of which must be validated by getting them stamped with the date and time in a machine you'll find near the doors on buses and trams or the barrier at metro stations. Ticket types are: * non transfer tickets which cost 14 Czech Crowns (about 35p) which allow you travel for 20 minutes by bus or tram (no changes) or up to five stops on the metro (you can change lines) * transfer tickets which cost 20 Czech Crowns (about 50p) which allow you to travel for one hour fifteen minutes with any number of changes between bus, tram and metro. Tram numbers 22 and 23 follow a route that takes in the new town and then crosses the river before going through the castle district and then up to the castle itself. Public transport authority website: www.dpp.cz 3.3 - By Taxi: Prague taxis used to be notoriously prone to over charge. Although they have improved considerably, it's still advisable to get your hotel or restaurant to book you one or at least to agree the price before you set off.

4.0 - THE HIT LIST NB English names are given first followed by the Czech name. 4.1 Palaces:

Prague Castle - Prazsky Hrad The castle which overlooks the city from its hillside location across the river has been the power base for emperors, kings and princes for over 1,000 years. The principal sites within the complex are listed below. The ticket office and tourist information office which are over to the right as you walk into the third courtyard are open daily from 9am to 5pm during the winter and 9am to 6pm during the summer months. Summer Opening (from 1 April until the end of October): The Castle complex is open from 5am to midnight. Attractions which require tickets (Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica, the Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower) are open from 9am to 5pm. The Convent of St. George which is part of the National Gallery and the Story of Prague Castle exhibition are open until 6pm. Prague Castle Gardens, including the Stag Moat with a nature trail are open daily throughout the summer season. In April and October from 10am to 6pm, in May and September from 9am to 7pm in June and July from 9am to 9pm and in August from 9am to 8pm. St George's Convent - Jirsky Klaster Extensive gallery of seventeenth and eighteenth century art. www.ngprague.cz St George's Basilica - Basilica of sv Jiri The outside of this church is Baroque but the interior is one of the most beautiful examples of the thirteenth century Romanesque style in Europe. Golden Lane - Zlata Ulicka Once the centre of Prague's goldsmith industry, these days this is a very pretty walk with its brightly coloured houses but it also has a lot of tourist schlock. Prague Castle Picture Gallery - Obrazarna Prazskeho hradu Extensive collection of paintings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries including works by Rubens and Veronese. Also included are the remains of a ninth century church which forms part of the earliest parts of the castle.
