Commodore's Message

is the official publication of the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club P.O. Box 17213 South Lake Tahoe, CA 96151 [email protected] southlaketahoeyachtclub.com

Hello Everyone, Welcome to 2016! For the Tahoe area, it has been an especially great winter of snow, skiing and good snow pack for spring water and a future increase in lake level! It is a great start to 2016. Come and enjoy the winter snow as well as later when we benefit from the expected lake level rise.

SLTYC Officers Kevin Kornegay - Commodore Carol Gerard - Vice Commodore Marty DeTarr - Rear Commodore Catherine Kornegay - Secretary

2015 was a great year for South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club. We established our clubhouse and bar along with obtaining our liquor license. Our Vice-Commodore, Carol Gerard, is working diligently on creating a busy, varied and activity-filled calendar. See Carol’s article and activity listings elsewhere in The Anchor and on our website.

SLTYC Board of Directors Allison Jones - Membership Harry Jones - Publications Linda Gordon- Communications Carra Johnck - Ship’s Store John Johnck - Port Captain

Our website is very comprehensive and especially accessible for keeping up to date with club activities. We added new sections such as the Activities Calendar, Where in the World is the Burgee, Peek into the Past and more. Please check it out www. southlaketahoeyachtclub.com. We are looking forward to our funfilled active 2016 cruise year and getting to know our many new members! Your Commodore, Kevin Kornegay

Many new members joined us in 2015 and it was fun sharing good times with everyone. Our volunteer activities included Beach Clean-up at Valhalla, serving food at Bread and Broth and donating food and toys for the holidays. Our members were very generous with their time and gift giving.

Bells boat and they have owned many boats throughout the course of their marriage. Many wonderful times were spent with family on their houseboat, various power boats such as his beloved Chaparral and their wave runners. Dennis’ two daughters, their spouses, 4 grandsons and granddaughter shared many family gatherings centered on Dennis’ love of the water and Lake Tahoe.

Dennis Wayne Severloh 1944 – 2015 With sadness we report that after a long illness, Dennis Severloh passed away on December 21 at the age of 71. Dennis and his wife Norma have been members of the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club since 2005, joining the club several years after they had relocated from southern California to their Tahoe Keys home. Dennis was born, went to school and met Norma in southern California. For 30 years, Dennis was employed by the Los Angeles County, first working for 13 years at the LA County Arboretum and then successfully transferring to the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. Dennis was a dedicated Deputy Sheriff and loved working for the Sheriff’s Department until his retirement in 2001. Dennis has always been a boat lover and immensely enjoyed all of his time spent on the water. Early in their marriage, Dennis surprised Norma with the purchase of a flat bottom racing

As for the SLTYC, Dennis loved talking about boats and being with other people who shared his passion. He and Norma enjoyed many outings and events with their fellow club members and developed many good friendships through the club. Dennis so loved the water that one of his last adventures was to travel with family members on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers from Amsterdam to Budapest on a Viking Cruise ship last August.

An “Eight Bell” Ceremony in honor of Dennis will be held at SLTYC Crab Feed dinner on Saturday, February 27th. Memorial donations may be made to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, 1485 Cherry Hills Circle, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Volunteering and Giving by Yacht Club Members The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club has a long history (since the 1950s when it was first formed as The Boat Club) of volunteering and giving to support the people and community of South Lake Tahoe. 2015 saw the club members participate in several activities to continue with this value. During the summer, yacht club members enjoyed camaraderie while cleaning Valhalla Estates Beach every other Monday morning throughout the summer collecting hundreds of pounds

Winter 2016

of trash resulting in a more beautiful beach environment for all to enjoy. The Adopt a Beach project is sponsored by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and the League to Save Lake Tahoe. Yacht Club members also sponsored a full-course dinner through Bread & Broth’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” program and sent

7 members to help the B&B volunteers package food giveaway bags, serve a meal to over 100 dinner guests and help with the meal’s cleanup. Members also brought toys and non-perishable food to the Commodore’s Ball in December. These were donated to Christmas Cheer for the 2015 season with distribution of the items done at the South Lake Tahoe Middle School. Members look forward to continuing with volunteering and giving to the community in various ways throughout 2016.

2016 - Another Year of Growth

JOIN TODAY

www.southlaketahoeyachtclub.com

Hello to all of our SLTYC members! As I begin my membership director duties, I realize that those who have served in this position before me are to be congratulated. There is a lot to learn, however, all of it is very organized. (Thank you Carol Gerard!) But there is one thing I did not know would come with a commitment such as this…the fact that there are so many helping hands. Our Club is a wonderful combination of talent and friendship…I am happy to be a part of that. The 2016 Membership Renewal Form can be found at southlaketahoeyachtclub.com, so that those who may not have renewed yet, can

do so by January 31; remember to send it in with your $200 check. With the recent changes in the SLTYC By-Laws, it is time again for all of our club members to renew for the 2016 Cruise Year. I will of course be helping my husband, Harry Jones, our Publications Director, to work with the new members who join so that they can advertise in The Anchor. (All advertisers must be members.) But make no mistake—we are looking for advertisers who love boating and Lake Tahoe and want to be participating members of our great Club.

Carol Gerard, Vice Commodore, will be a big help to me in creating a fun and successful Membership Drive event, to be announced later. I will really need all of your help to bring in more members. This is something to tell your BFF’s about. (For the guys, that’s Best Friends Forever.) Here’s to a good year! Allison Jones Membership Director [email protected]

Vice Commodore's Report As the incoming Vice Commodore, I would like to thank and acknowledge my predecessor, Jana Plummer, for all of her efforts in making the 2015 Cruise Year such a wonderful success. I think we can all agree that we enjoyed a wonderful array of “new & different” events and activities that Jana and her “Cruise Year Planning Party” committee put together at the beginning of 2015.

and open to any new ideas and party planning input.

In planning for the 2016 Cruise Year, it made perfect sense to build on the success of Jana’s program. So at the January 7th Board Meeting, we did some “brainstorming”, wrote down some dates, put down all of the activities that we enjoyed throughout the past year, added a few new ideas and came up with a schedule that is, as Jana put it, “under construction”

Finally, and most importantly, I would love to see all of our members have a great Cruise Year but also be a part of the planning and setup of at least one event in the Cruise Year. As you go through the schedule, you will notice that there are lots of openings for Cruise Captain. Please consider volunteering as Cruise Captain for an event that sounds like something

4

We want everyone to enjoy this coming year and your input and your ideas are important to meeting that goal. So, please take a moment and peruse the “Tentative” 2016 Cruise Year Schedule. Please keep in mind that this is a “draft” and changes can be made as I get input.

you could have fun with. Everyone from the Board has agreed that we will be there to help our Cruise Captains with whatever assistance they need. I am anxious to hear from you… your ideas, your questions, your signing up as a Cruise Captain (or co-Captains) or anything else that you have to offer. Thanks, Carol Gerard SLTYC Vice Commodore [email protected] (530) 542-2876

A Big Thank You to Steve Lapkin!

Photographer Steve Lapkin has graciously provided his breathtaking photograph of two wooden boats on Tahoe, for the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club banner; to be displayed in club trade show booths. Yacht club members are excited to show off as much of Lake Tahoe as possible, and this is one great way to accomplish it. Steve Lapkin has devoted over twenty-five years to nautical photography. It began for him at Lake Tahoe and spread worldwide as he traveled to, and for boating-related venues, including the East Coast, upper-Midwest and Pacific Northwest of the United States and Western Europe. His work was quickly noticed and appreciated and his portfolio

grew. He is published in books such as Wooden Boat and Yachting Magazine and duPONT REGISTRY has retained him for their collateral needs. West Marine signed him as a freelance provider in 1998 and his photography has been used for their national catalog covers. He began use of a helicopter for aerial captures in 2003, and now craves that aspect beyond any other platform. The banner photograph included in this article was shot on June 22, 2010, at 8: 15 AM PDT; thus the abundance of snow remaining from the prior winter. The two vessels are “Thunderbird” and “High Falluttin”...both of Hacker boat design. The earlier hour shoot, says Lapkin, is tantamount to most other times of the

day—low light, less clutter or background distraction, calm waters allowing for the eye to be drawn, undistracted to the subjects—the boats. While this particular ‘click’ was just after 8 AM, the preparation commenced well before dawn. The helicopter was staged at Truckee and the liftoff was just after first light. Lapkin’s team devoted over 2 hours in the air, in this case, spending most of their time over the Lake’s east shore area. Five hours of work, $5,000.00 in expense: this image has become a favorite of many and is on display at commercial waterfront properties. Persons who wish to contact Steve Lapkin directly are encouraged to do so by emailing him at [email protected]. Visit his website at www.h2omark.com.

What is RBOC and what does it do for me? You have probably heard us speak of RBOC in conjunction with PICYA & know that we send them a donation every year from the SLTYC. What really is RBOC & what does it do for us as boaters? The Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) is a non-profit government advocacy organization led by 19 volunteer boating officers and directors from all over the state. They work with lawmakers to inform them of California boaters’ needs and to advocate boater positions on legislation and regulations. These directors, along with Jerry Desmond, Jr. who joined his father’s firm to become Desmond & Desmond, professional lobbyists in the Capitol, work to promote recreational boaters’ interests, protect boaters from restrictive or adverse laws, and enhance boating opportunities. RBOC does this by reviewing all proposed laws that affect boaters, writing beneficial laws, opposing bad laws, and

8

keeping the government from taking boaters’ tax dollars for non-boating reasons. There are times when you see an E-blast from us for a Call-To-Action. This is a request for Boaters to contact their State or Federal Congressmen concerning certain issues. This is the most efficient way to let those voting for these bills know what we as boaters see as important. You can go to the RBOC.org website to get the contact information for your Elected Representatives & sample letter for each issue. It is estimated that, over the years, RBOC’s efforts are saving each boating family hundreds of dollars each year. RBOC represents all California Boaters and operates solely on donations from boaters like You! RBOC encourages all yacht club members to contribute a minimum of $20 per boating family per year. Not much for such a return on investment!

2015 Commodore's Ball The December Commodore’s Ball was a lovely and elegant affair. The Clubhouse was festively decorated with wrapped packages, a Christmas tree, beautiful centerpieces and table arrangements and hanging Christmas ornaments to set the tone for the Holiday Spirit. In the “spirit of Christmas”, SLTYC members came loaded

with toys to put under the Christmas tree. The toys were given to the children of South Lake Tahoe through the Christmas Cheer toy distribution program. After cocktails and a merry exchange of holiday greetings and catching up with new and continuing member friends, a delicious

three course dinner, catered by the Fresh Ketch, was served. As the evening holiday’s celebration began to wind down, Kevin Kornegay, our returning Commodore, held the Change of Watch for the retiring and new incoming board members. Kevin then introduced Linda Gordon, our Yachtsman of the Year recipient for 2014, who presented this year’s Yachtsman of the Year award to Carol Gerard, Membership Director for 2015. The Commodore’s Ball was a wonderful early December festive event to start the holiday season!
