What is Seed Production Technology (SPT)? A novel and proprietary seed production system • Significantly reduces production costs* (>20%) • Out-licensing opportunity • Improves product quality • Improves worker safety • Reduces environmental footprint
Biotechnology for Production Field Performance Customer Benefits • Germplasm and trait purity Î Yield/Product Quality • Improved process efficiency Î Supply Reliability • No SPT transgenes in products Î No SPT yield drag
Additional Value Capture • Applicable to all germplasm - Can be leveraged across the industry • Differentiating technology
Benefits of SPT • Works across all corn germplasm • >20% reduction in total production costs* • Maximum product/trait purity for customers • Safer production process for employees • ‘Greener’ technology; lower environmental footprint • No impact on hybrid yield for customers • Internally contained process – No SPT grain enters food/feed or grain channels
Trait Characterization and Development • Sr. Research Manager, Howard Hershey • Howard’s work focuses on applied agricultural biotechnology with special emphasis on the areas of plant reproductive biology and transgene trait development. • He joined DuPont as a research scientist in 1985 and has held positions in various departments ranging from Central Research and Development to Crop Protection to Agricultural Biotechnology. Howard moved to Pioneer in 2001 where he has held positions in the Agronomic Traits and Trait Characterization and Development Departments. • In his current role, Howard leads the SPT Implementation Office and also serves as Rice Trait Characterization and Development Liaison. • He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Miami University and a Ph.D in Biochemistry from Michigan State University.
Global Product Strategy • Sr. Marketing Manager, Mat Müller • Mat's work focus is on developing competitive strategies to integrate our scientific and marketing efforts in discovery, development and launch of native and transgenic Agronomic Traits. • He joined Pioneer as a research scientist through our 2004 acquisition of Verdia, Inc. In 2005, he moved to the Midwest and to a new role as business development manager, and in 2008, was named senior marketing manager and science lead in the Global Product Strategy group. • In his current role, Mat has responsibilities on various product development and go to market teams, and frequently interfaces with our R&D, marketing and business development groups. • Mat holds a bachelor's degree in plant physiology and molecular biology and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, and an MBA from the California State University at Hayward.
Pioneer North America • Johnston Parent Seed Plant Manager, Dick Hora • Started his career with Pioneer in 1981, as an Agronomist at the Marengo production plant. In 1985 he was promoted to Assistant Plant Manager. In 1998 he became Plant Manager for the Johnston Parent Seed location.
