With almost 200 years of history, about 30,000 students and an outstanding reputation at home and abroad, the University of Bonn is one of Germany’s important centres of higher education. It is a research-based university which operates internationally, cooperating with a large number of universities and research institutions across the globe, specialising in fields of research and teaching which have gained world-wide standing.

Chairing the Board is the Rector, who is elected for a six-year period to represent the University in its external relations. The other members of the Rektorat are the Prorektoren, the Deputy Rectors, and the Kanzler, the chancellor, who heads the university administration. The Hochschulrat is a council that comprises three members of the University and seven personalities from academic life, culture, and economy. It advises the Rektorat and oversees its management. The Senate represents the professors, other university staff and students.

Insgesamt lehren und forschen in Bonn rund 500 Professoren. A total of about 500 professors are employed in teaching and research. In addition there are several thousand academic and non-academic staff in the academic, technical and administrative fields, making the University one of the region’s largest employers. Seven faculties form the University’s academic core. They have developed gradually as products of the University’s history, with some of them tracing their roots back to the foundation of the University in 1818. Traditionell modern Traditionally modern Am 18. Oktober 1818 gründete der preußische König Friedrich Wilhelm III. die Bonner Universität. Später erhielt sie darum den Namen des Regenten. In fast 200 Jahren hat sich die Hochschule einen Spitzenplatz in der deutschen und internationalen Universitätslandschaft erarbeitet. Auf eine lange Aufbruch- und Blütezeit folgten nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten 1933 „Gleichschaltung“, die Verfolgung Andersdenkender, geistige Austrocknung und schließlich die physische Zerstörung bei einem schweren Bombenangriff im Oktober 1944. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erfolgte der Wiederaufbau und – dank der Besinnung auf ihre große Tradition und ihrer konsequenten internationalen Ausrichtung – erwarb sich die Universität Bonn herausragendes Ansehen und Anziehungskraft für Studierende, Dozenten und Wissenschaftler aus dem In- und Ausland.

Bonn University was founded on 18 October 1818 by the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III. So the university later assumed the regent’s name in its full title. Over its almost 200-year history Bonn has established itself as one of the foremost institutions within the German and international university landscape. A long period of intellectual awakening and blossoming came to an end in 1933, when the Nazis took power and regimented academic life with a purge of

all dissenters. The university’s intellectual impoverishment was followed by its physical destruction through heavy aerial bombardment in October 1944. Reconstruction soon began after the Second World War, and the university again managed to build an outstanding reputation by drawing on its great traditions while moving consistently in an international direction. This has turned Bonn into an extremely attractive university for students, lecturers and researchers from Germany and around the world.

Spitze in der Forschung Spearheading research

Die Universität Bonn ist eine weltweit angesehene und vernetzte Forschungsuniversität mit einem klar umrissenen wissenschaftlichen Profil und definierten Feldern der Exzellenzforschung. Indikator für die Erfolge Bonner Wissenschaftler sind neben zwei Nobelpreisen, zahlreichen Leibniz-Preisen und anderen akademischen Ehren die im harten Wettbewerb erlangten „Drittmittel“ in Höhe von fast 136 Millionen Euro. Vor allem die von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Forschungsverbünde sind ein Gütesiegel unserer Forschung – allen voran die Exzellenzcluster Mathematik und Immunologie sowie die beiden Graduiertenschulen in Ökonomie (gefördert bis Ende 2012) und Physik/Astronomie. 12

Bonn University enjoys worldwide recognition and the best international connections as a centre for research. It is a research university with a clear scientific profile and well-defined fields of research excellence. There are plenty of indicators for the success of Bonn’s researchers: not only two Nobel Prizes, numerous Leibniz Prizes and other top academic honours, but also the university’s strong record in attracting “third-party funding” in the face of tough competition, now totalling almost EUR 136 million. A particular seal of quality for research at Bonn is the development of joint research organisations funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) – especially the Clusters of Excellence Mathematics and Immunology and the two Graduate Schools for Economics (funded until the end of 2012) and Physics/Astronomy.

Mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) unterhält die Universität Bonn die Exzellenzcluster Mathematik und Immunologie, Graduiertenschulen in Ökonomie (gefördert bis Ende 2012) und Physik/Astronomie sowie zahlreiche Forschergruppen und Sonderforschungbereiche in Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften, Ökonomie und Medizin. Beteiligt daran sind neben Bonner Wissenschaftlern aus verschiedenen Fächern auch Kollegen anderer deutscher Universitäten. Zu den maßgeblichen Förderern der Spitzenforschung zählt darüber hinaus das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, das vor allem Verbundprojekte der naturwissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung an nationalen und internationalen Zentren unterstützt. Weitere bedeutende Förderer der Bonner Universität sind die Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD), sowie zahlreiche Stiftungen. Bonn ist insbesondere bei der Einwerbung von Stiftungsprofessuren die erfolgreichste nordrhein-westfälische Universität.

With the support of Germany’s main academic research funding agency the German Research Foundation, the University of Bonn is home to two clusters of excellence in mathematics and immunology, two graduate schools in economics (funded until the end of 2012) and physics/astronomy, and various research teams and collaborative research centres in mathematics, science, economics and medicine. These involve not only Bonn’s own academic staff but also colleagues from other German universities.

Another key funding agency for top-level research is the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, which mainly funds projects in the sciences requiring joint efforts between groups of scientists at national or international centres. Other important funding sources for the University of Bonn are the North-Rhine Westphalian Academy of Sciences, the German Academic Exchange Service, as well as many foundations. Bonn is the most successful university in North-Rhine Westphalia at attracting foundation chairs for professorships.

Ein breites Studienangebot A broad range of subjects

Mit rund 30.000 Studierenden gehört die Universität Bonn zu den großen deutschen Hochschulen. Jahr für Jahr schließen mehr als 4.000 Absolventen erfolgreich ihr Studium in Bonn ab. Dazu kommen rund 600 Promotionen und zirka 40 Habilitationen. Bonn ist eine klassische Volluniversität mit rund 90 grundständigen Studiengängen von A wie Asienwissenschaften bis Z wie Zahnmedizin, darunter auch Lehramtsstudiengänge und zahlreiche internationale Studienprogramme.

With about 30,000 students Bonn ranks among the big German universities. Each year more than 4,000 students graduate in Bonn. In addition there are about 600 doctorates and approximately 40 post-doctorates (Habilitationen). Bonn is a classic university with a full range of courses, with about 90 undergraduate courses ranging from A for Asian Studies to Z for Zoology, with teacher training courses and many international programmes.

Als erste und bislang einzige große deutsche Traditionsuniversität verabschiedet die Universität Bonn ihre Absolventen mit einer zentralen Feier. Die Absolventen sind dabei in Talar und Barett gekleidet und tragen die Farben ihrer jeweiligen Fakultät. The University of Bonn was the first of the large traditional universities in Germany to introduce a central graduation ceremony for all its graduates. The graduates are dressed in gown and mortar board and wear the colours of their faculty.

Forschend lernen Learning via research Ihr Selbstverständnis als Forschungsuniversität prägt auch das Niveau und die Ausrichtung von Lehre und Studium. Studierende erhalten die Gelegenheit, aktiv an Forschungsprojekten teilzunehmen. Das solide forschungsnahe Studium stellt für Bonner Absolventen einen klaren Vorteil auf dem Arbeitsmarkt dar, der mit dem wissenschaftlichen Renommee der an der Universität tätigen Hochschullehrer korreliert. Das forschende Lernen ist der Königsweg zur Qualifikation wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Eliten. Die Universität Bonn verfolgt das Ziel, den wissenschaftlich-akademischen Nachwuchs für ein breites Spektrum von Fächern im strukturierten Rahmen von Graduiertenschulen zur Promotion zu führen. Die Bonner Graduiertenschulen sind in einem universitätsweiten Verbund mit dem Namen „Bonn International Graduate Schools (BIGS) zusammengeführt worden. Ein Sprecherrat wirbt für die Einrichtung von weiteren Graduiertenschulen und gibt die bereits gesammelten Erfahrungen an andere Fächer weiter. Über die Aufnahme einer Graduiertenschule in den Verbund BIGS entscheidet das Rektorat.

The fact that the University sees itself as a research-led university also influences the level and orientation of teaching and studying. Students are given the opportunity of taking part actively in research projects. This thorough, research-based approach to studying represents a clear advantage for Bonn graduates on the labour market, which correlates with the high academic standing of those teaching at the University. Learning via research is the ideal way for academic and social élites to gain their qualifications.

The Bonn University is committed to promoting the new generation of scholars and scientists from a broad spectrum of subjects as they complete their doctoral degrees within the structured framework of graduate schools. Bonn’s graduate schools are grouped together in a university-wide association called “Bonn International Graduate Schools” (BIGS). A council of spokespersons is encouraging the establishment of further graduate schools and passing on the experience already gained to other aspiring subjects areas. The decision on the inclusion of a graduate school in the BIGS association is taken by the university’s Rector’s Board.

One particular feature of the international orientation of the University of Bonn is the above-average proportion of students from abroad: about 3,700 of them, i. e. 13 per cent, come from one of the 140 countries which are represented on the Bonn campus. International courses of study, bilingual and English-taught courses are reliable guarantors for the attractiveness of Bonn to foreign students. The University of Bonn has a long history of international links with the best European, Asian and American universities. Bonn University forms a city within the city. It has more than 350 buildings located around the Bonn area. The most impressive site is undoubtedly the historic main building in the city centre, which originally served as a palatial residence of the prince electors. Together with the adjacent Hofgarten park, this iconic architectural landmark is an important ingredient of the university’s unique charm. Bonn University also benefits from its location in one of Germany’s strongest regions for research – the “ABC” region encompassing Aachen, Bonn and Cologne.

Wer nach Bonn kommt, der schließt die Stadt schnell in sein Herz. Dies können auch die vielen Studenten, Dozenten und Wissenschaftler aus dem In- und Ausland bestätigen, die an der Universität Bonn lernen, lehren oder forschen. Die Stadt Bonn verdankt ihren Flair und ihre Liebenswürdigkeit nicht zuletzt ihren gastfreundlichen, weltoffenen Bewohnern. Weltweit bekannt wurde die Stadt, deren bekanntester Sohn Ludwig van Beethoven ist, als Parlaments- und Regierungssitz nach 1949. Nach dem Umzug des Bundestages und von Teilen der Regierung nach Berlin folgte die Ansiedlung zahlreicher internationaler Organisationen und bedeutender Konzerne. Newcomers to Bonn soon grow very fond of the city – a fact confirmed by the many students and academics, from Germany and abroad, who learn, teach or research here. It wins people’s hearts with its charm and sophistication, and not least because its people are welcoming and open-minded. The city, whose best known son was Ludwig van Beethoven, became famous all over the world when it was made the seat of the West German parliament and government after 1949. When Parliament and part of the government moved to Berlin, their place was taken by a large number of international organisations and important companies. Today, for example, Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post have their headquarters in Bonn, and several UN institutions are represented in the city.
