Choirs, ensembles, and individual ringers (and non-ringing companions) are invited to join internationally-known conductors and clinicians, Fred Gramann and Larry Smith, for our 2010 European Handbell Festival—FRANCE! A native of Washington state, Fred Gramann began his early organ studies with Dr. Edward Hansen of Seattle. While earning a bachelor’s degree in organ performance at Syracuse University, he won first prize in the 1972 Fort Wayne National Organ Competition and was awarded the Arthur Poister Prize for outstanding organist at Syracuse University School of Music for four consecutive years. From 1972-75, Fred studied organ in Paris, France, with Marie-Claire Alain, also spending one year working with the organist and composer Maurice Duruflé. Fred earned a master’s degree in organ performance at the Fred Gramann and Larry Smith University of Michigan during 1975-76. He returned to Paris in 1976 as Director of Music at the American Church in Paris, the oldest non-governmental American institution abroad. Fred started the handbell program at the American Church in 1981. He has had numerous choral anthems and handbell works published in the U.S. and is Honorary Associate Director of the Raleigh Ringers.

Larry D. Smith is in his 26th year as Professor of Voice at the University of Southern Mississippi where he also conducts his wellknown handbell choir “Carillon,” which has performed in 20 states, Puerto Rico, and 10 foreign countries since 1985. Also Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Dr. Smith earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi and the D.M.A. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is past chairman of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers and remains busy as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. Halfpenny Bridge, Dublin

SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR RINGERS Early registration is strongly encouraged. Once we reach 40 participants, we will start a waitlist before adding a second bus for a maximum of 64 participants. The repertoire includes six pieces that are generally of level three difficulty but may include a level four work. All ringers are expected to be capable of ringing level three music and must prepare music before they arrive at the first rehearsal in Paris. The conductors will supply performance notes and suggestions for preparing the music. Solo pieces may be included at the concerts by complete choirs that attend the festival.

IN PREPARATION for two concert performances, ringers will meet for three intensive four-hour sessions. During rehearsal time, there will be planned and optional activities for non-ringers.

Tour Program 05, MONDAY

DEPARTURE D-IN FLIGHT

This afternoon, depart from various gateways to connect with the transatlantic flight. We’re on our way! 06,TUESDAY B-ON BOARD

PARIS L-INDEPENDENT

D-HOTEL OR RESTAURANT

Bonjour and welcome to Paris! Upon arrival, we’ll meet our friend and tour manager, Norbert Vollebrecht. We’ll travel into central Paris and see views of the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysées, Paris Opera, Louvre, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. We’ll make a stop at the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens. This tranquil spot makes it hard to believe you are in the center of Paris. We’ll take time for an independent lunch in the lively area between the Luxembourg Gardens and Place St. Michel. Late afternoon, we’ll check into our hotel. After time to rest and freshen up, we’ll enjoy dinner together at the hotel or a nearby restaurant. 07, WEDNESDAY B-HOTEL

L-INDEPENDENT

CHARTRES, PARIS D-INDEPENDENT

For the next three days, we are in for a special treat with morning rehearsals (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) taking place right in “Fred’s Church”—the American Church in Paris. Non-ringers will receive guidance on how to use the Paris metro for their morning explorations of Paris. Ringers and non-ringers will have a two-day Paris Museum Pass for entrance into over 50 museums and historic sites in Paris and the Paris region. After morning rehearsal and time for a quick independent lunch, we’ll depart for our afternoon

excursion to Chartres Cathedral—one of the most magnificent of all of France’s cathedrals, in part because of the beautiful stained-glass windows. Back in Paris, tonight’s dinner is independent. From neighborhood bistros to some of the world’s top restaurants, there is something for every taste and budget. 08, THURSDAY B-HOTEL

PARIS L- INDEPENDENT

This morning ringers have their second rehearsal from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.. Non-ringers have the morning to explore Paris. The next two afternoons will be free for independent activities in Paris. In addition to the famous museums and monuments, there are many smaller museums with something for nearly every interest. One of the options for this afternoon is to join Fred for an informal tour of some of the “bells of Paris.” Carillon will give a concert in or near Paris this evening. Dinner will be included at a nearby restaurant before or after the concert. 09, FRIDAY B-HOTEL

PARIS L-INDEPENDENT

D-CHURCH/RESTAURANT

The final rehearsal is planned this morning. After rehearsal, everything will be set up for tonight’s concert. The afternoon is again free for independent activities. One of the unique features of Paris is that each of the 20 different neighborhoods, known as arrondisements, is almost like a separate town within the city. Fred will offer a special walking tour of the 7th arrondisement area where the American Church in Paris is located. There are also several museums within easy walking distance of the church, including the Musée d’Orsay with its world famous

Concert Information THURSDAY, JULY 8 - “Carillon” from the University of Southern Mississippi will give an evening concert in one of the churches of Paris.

FRIDAY, JULY 9 - The first festival concert will take place at the American Church in Paris.

SATURDAY, JULY 10 - The second festival concert, sponsored by the organization France Etats-Unis, is planned for one of the towns north of Paris.

collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and the Musée Rodin. The group will either have a light meal at the American Church in Paris or a nearby restaurant before tonight’s concert. After the performance, we’ll go on an evening cruise down the Seine.

10, SATURDAY B-HOTEL

GIVERNY, PARIS, CAEN L-INDEPENDENT

D-RESTAURANT

Another wonderful day is in store for us! We’ll have some free time this morning in Paris, including time for an early independent lunch. Early afternoon, we’ll depart Paris for the town of Giverny (although close to Paris, it’s located in the province of Normandy). Our destination is the Monet House and Garden. After time to enjoy the beautiful gardens, we’ll have an early dinner at a restaurant in Giverny before our concert performance in one of the towns in this area. Tonight’s concert is being sponsored by the organization, France Etats-Unis, founded after World War II to promote friendship between the French and American people. After the concert, we’ll say goodbye to Fred as we continue to Caen, our “home” in Normandy for the next three nights. 11, SUNDAY B-HOTEL

NORMANDY BEACHES, CAEN L-INDEPENDENT

D-INDEPENDENT

After traveling through the peaceful countryside, it’s hard to believe that the historic Battle of Normandy took place here in 1944. Most of today will be devoted to the D-Day landings. With a local guide, we’ll visit Omaha Beach, the code name for the beaches of St. Laurent, Colleville, and

Vierville-sur-Mer invaded by the allied forces on June 6, 1944. Near the end of the day, we’ll make a stop at the American Cemetery. Back in Caen, there will be free time for independent dinner. 12, MONDAY

BAYEUX, MONT ST. MICHEL, CAEN

B-HOTEL

L-INDEPENDENT

D-INDEPENDENT

We’ll continue our exploration of Normandy with a morning visit to Bayeux, the first French town liberated on June 7, 1944. Remarkably, the town suffered very little damage and its medieval quarter and Cathedral have been beautifully preserved. The highlight of our visit is the opportunity to see Queen Mathilda’s Tapestry—more commonly known as the Bayeux Tapestry. This famous medieval needlework is a pictorial narrative of the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066. After this visit, we’ll travel to Mont St. Michel, located at the western edge of Normandy. Mont St. Michel is sometimes referred to as “the Wonder of the Western World” because of its extraordinary site and glorious architecture. We’ll return to Caen for independent dinner and overnight stay. 13, TUESDAY B-HOTEL

HONFLEUR, ROUEN, ROISSY L-INDEPENDENT

D-RESTAURANT

Before leaving Normandy, we’ll visit two more of its beautiful towns. After breakfast, we’ll travel the short distance to Honfleur, a lovely seaside town that continues to inspire artists, writers, and musicians. We’ll have time for independent exploration and lunch. This is a wonderful town for last-minute shopping! Early this afternoon we’ll continue to Rouen, a beautiful medieval town. It was here in 1431 that Joan of Arc was put on trial. We’ll visit Rouen Cathedral, which was immortalized by Monet in a series of paintings of its façade under different conditions of light and climate. In 2010, Rouen will recognize its strong artistic heritage when it becomes the “City of Impression” and hosts an exhibition celebrating the Impressionist artists’ love of this area of France. Before leaving Rouen, our group will have the opportunity to see this special exhibit featuring around 100 paintings of Rouen and the surrounding countryside. From here, we’ll continue via main roads to our hotel, located within an easy drive of the airport. Tonight’s farewell dinner will bring the 2010 Festival to a close. 14, WEDNESDAY B-HOTEL

RETURN L-IN FLIGHT

After our time in beautiful France, it is time to say au revoir! Following breakfast, transfer to the airport to check in for the return flights.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The cost of your tour includes: Air transportation roundtrip from Atlanta to Paris on Delta Airlines or any regularly scheduled air carrier, based on a nonrefundable/ nonchangeable fare, which requires a minimum of 10 passengers traveling roundtrip together. Tickets are issued 45 days prior to departure. Passengers who cancel after tickets are issued will forfeit the total airfare in addition to the penalties noted under “Cancellation and Refunds.” Secure flight information. The requirement to collect date of birth, gender, and full name are federally mandated by the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Secure Flight Program. While disclosure of this information is voluntary, if it is not provided, participants may be denied boarding. TSA’s privacy policy, as well as additional details, can be found at tsa.gov using the keywords Secure Flight. Witte Travel takes all reasonable steps to safeguard the privacy of this and any other information collected from its tour participants. Land transportation. A deluxe air-conditioned motorcoach will be used for transfers, excursions, and travel between cities. Because many of Europe’s old cities restrict the routes over which motorcoaches can travel, sightseeing within cities will often be done on foot and via public transportation. Accommodations based on two persons sharing a room with private facilities. Most hotels we use range from moderate first-class to standard first-class. When hotels in these categories are not available, top-quality superior tourist-class properties are selected. The supplement for single accommodations is $500. Single rooms in European hotels are often very small. If you register alone but prefer to share, we will do our best to assign a roommate. If a single room must be assigned to any member of the group for any reason, even if it is at the last minute or while on tour, we will need to charge the single supplement. Changes in rooming arrangements requested by the participant 45 or fewer days prior to departure may result in additional charges. Buffet breakfast daily and five dinners as indicated in the itinerary. Dinners do not include beverages. A multi-lingual tour manager to accompany the group from arrival in Paris until departure from Roissy. The tour manager will be assisted by local guides as needed. Sightseeing and admission fees in accordance with the itinerary, including a 2-day Paris museum pass. Porterage of one suitcase—with a maximum size of 62" (height plus width plus depth) and weight of 50 pounds—per person is provided at hotels to the greatest extent possible. Porterage is not provided at airports and some hotels do not have porters. You may also carry a purse, a camera, and one small piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 15 pounds and measuring 45" (height plus width plus depth). Soft-sided hand luggage is recommended. Wheeled hand luggage is acceptable. Please note that hand luggage does not fit in the overhead bins on the motorcoach. Depending on the size of the group, there may be room for hand luggage in the storage compartments under the motorcoach or by an empty seat inside the motorcoach. If there isn’t room in the storage compartments or any empty seats, hand luggage will need to be placed on the floor in front of your feet. The size and weight restrictions noted for suitcases and hand luggage conform to most airlines’ requirements and they are essential for everyone’s comfort on board the motorcoach. Tipping and taxes are included for all services, including the tip for the tour manager and motorcoach driver. European insurance. Each tour participant is covered during the organized land portion of the tour for medical expenses arising out of illness or accidents occurring on tour and requiring hospitalization. The assistance of SOS International is also included where needed. SOS International supplies ill and injured travelers with a variety of services, such as early returns to the U.S. when so ordered by the attending physician. Each participant whose airline ticket is issued by Witte Travel is also covered during his/her flights. The included insurances carry limitations and restrictions and do not cover luggage or trip cancellation. Witte Travel recommends that each traveler purchase a complete travel protection plan that includes luggage and trip cancellation coverage. For your convenience, we make available a travel protection plan offered by Trip Mate. For more information, see “Optional travel protection plan” below. The tour cost does not include passports, airline luggage fees, optional travel protection plan including luggage and trip cancellation coverage, optional excursions, independent meals, and any other items not mentioned as included. Optional travel protection planTM2. Witte Travel recommends that each traveler purchase a complete travel protection package. For your convenience, we make available a travel protection plan offered by Trip Mate. This travel protection can be purchased at any time prior to making the final payment for your Trip. The policy exclusion for pre-existing conditions will be waived if your premium is received by Witte Travel & Tours within 14 days of the initial deposit for your Trip, provided you are not disabled from travel at the time you pay your premium. Trips over 30 days are not eligible for coverage. The premium for the Trip Mate Protection Plan that applies to your tour is noted on the application form. It may be necessary to increase the travel protection premium for those participants who purchase additional services and/or upgrade their arrangements. The premium for this travel protection plan is non-refundable. The Trip Mate travel protection plan does not cover any travel arrangements not made by or purchased from Witte Travel.
