February 2012 A Word from our Principal

Greetings Dingeman Families, Friends and Community, “ H ear Ye! Hear Ye! ” If you are wondering where to take your next family vacation, check out Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. I have been there several times and I still anticipate my return. Since many of us will not be there anytime soon, we are bringing Colonial Williamsburg to us! They have a saying there, “ T hat the future may learn from the past ” . That ’ s exactly what our fifth grade teachers and students are doing in getting ready to prepare an amazing trip for our school community. On February 15th, students and parents will step back in time to 1776 in our Colonial Williamsburg Living Museum presented by our fifth graders. As 18th century early American colonists, student will re-enact the life and times during the American Revolution. They will remain “ in character ” throughout their presentations ranging from education, home life, political figures, fashion and apparel, food, entertainment and military life. Come learn about what life was like for the colonists as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the people who helped build it! Not only can you learn what colonial life was like, you can learn what it ’ s like to be an artist! Our fabulous FFC will be hosting several Family Art Nights where you and your child can learn side by side famous artists ’ techniques and create your very own masterpiece! Who knows, you might be the next Picasso or O ’ Keefe! We look forward to seeing you and your child at these enriching programs. In Partnership for Excellence, Kimie Lochtefeld, Principal From our FFC President February is always one of my favorite times of the year. It is a month where we express our friendship and love to one another, celebrate our Presidents with some time off from school, or host a Super bowl or Oscar Night party. This month we could be looking for a Groundhog, celebrating Mardi Gras, or trying to remember to add an extra day for Leap Year. February is just a busy month. February is a busy month on the Dingeman campus as well. The Art Corps program will conclude our three-night family art evenings that feature artists M.C. Escher, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Faith Ringgold. Thank you to all the parents who helped make these special evenings happen – with a special acknowledgment to Dee Michetti and Nercy Wong, our two Art Corps Chairs. In addition, Lisa Vontsolos our Assemblies coordinator scheduled another wonderful FFC sponsored performance for the students. This month Dingeman will welcome a troupe to perform the play Alice in Wonderland followed by another assembly in March highlighting our kids ’ writing and honoring our student authors. Dates to Remember Everyone should keep their eyes open for information about our Feb 6, Tiger Rally Barnes and Noble Family Dinner Night on Monday, February Feb 7, Alice in Wonderland Assembly 13th and our upcoming Mother/Son Bowling Night on February Feb 9, Family Art Night 6:30pm 25th. 3rd graders Jeremy Yang, Brayden Chau, Donovan Tran, and Alex Santos Fink performed "The Lion Dance" to rave reviews during Rm. 12's Jan. 20th' "Lunar New Year Celebration!"

Students and their families in Mrs. Susan Turner's 3rd grade classroom hosted a festive and educational "Lunar New Year Celebration!", on Friday, January 20th, as coordinated by parents Vann and Thanh Tran and Yen Tu. Cultural activities included reading from a popular Asian bedtime story ( explaining the origin of the Zodiac animals from the lunar calendar ) , a lecture on the popular Lunar New Year customs and traditions as celebrated in many different countries, and a sharing of unique artifacts and clothing from Vietnam, Korea, The Philippines, and China. Students were able to explore Asian crafts "hands-on" ( origami ) and arts ( d ancing paper dragons) , after which they and their families enjoyed a fabulous luncheon buffet featuring traditional, authentic Asian cuisine. The highlight of the Lunar New Year Celebration was a dynamic "Lion Dance" performance, as rehearsed and performed in full costume to music by the following Rm. 12 students: Donovan Tran, Jeremy Yang, Alex Santos Fink, and Brayden Chau. As the boys performed throughout the school grounds, they received such rave reviews that were asked to do an "encore" performance for a special group of parents who were on site that day for a campus tour. Once again, their energetic "Lion Dance" performance was a crowd pleaser! Many thanks to Mrs. Turner and to the many Rm. 12 parent volunteers who made this “ Year of the Dragon” celebration so memorable!

Dingeman students enjoy watching the lively performance of "The Lion Dance!" as performed by Rm. 12 students on Jan. 20th for Lunar New Year

FFC sends Dingeman 5th graders to JA BizTown

Thank you to our Dingeman FFC for sponsoring a FANTASTIC field trip to Junior Achievement BizTown. On January 11th our 5th graders had an opportunity to experience JA BizTown right here in San Diego. This amazing program combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to this fully-interactive simulated town facility. For five weeks before the visit to the BizTown site, students began preparing for the experience. They learned about what a Community is and what it means to be part of one. Another lesson was on taxes and the role government plays in providing goods and services. The students also studied free enterprise, and the importance of philanthropy. At last the 5th graders were ready to visit BizTown. Each student had previously interviewed for a position at a business. They took part in operating banks, running the government, managing restaurants, running a news station, and raising money for a BizTown charity. The lessons in class combined with the hands on activities and active participation in the simulated community allowed our students to develop a strong understanding of the relationship between what they learn in school and their successful participation in a worldwide economy.
