READER: BRETHREN, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" June 1, 2018 Dear Parishioners, Over the past several weeks, many of you have noticed the Dayton Police Officers inside the Narthex and in the Community Center. We want to reassure you that there are no active threats to our church. Their presence is part of an overall safety plan being developed for our parish. In March of this year, a Church Safety Committee was convened at the request of Father Joseph and the Parish Council to review the safety needs of our church and to make recommendations. The committee includes parish council members and several members from our parish with law enforcement backgrounds. One of the recommendations, strongly supported by the law enforcement officers, was to have police presence. A trained officer is prepared to respond quickly and effectively to a variety of situations, and the mere presence of an officer can prevent certain situations from ever happening. The Safety Committee recommended having one Dayton Police Officer in the Church every Sunday and one officer in the Community Center during the Catechism school year. Other security measures are being implemented, such as keeping the side-doors of the church locked from the outside during services, upgrading the outdoor lighting around our buildings and parking lot, and installing security cameras around the church property. CPR/AED training classes were held for ushers, teachers and staff, and in the months ahead we hope to schedule ALICE active-shooter response training . The Safety Committee is hard at work developing a complete safety plan for our parish. This is part of an unfortunate but necessary trend in churches across the nation to improve security and emergency preparedness. We ask for your support. Please let us know if you have any questions. FROM FR. JOSEPH -Member in Good Standing. In order to serve as a sponsor or koumbaro/koumbara at a Sacrament of the Church one must be a pledged member of our parish for 2018 according to the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Section 18 of the UPR states: “At a minimum, a parishioner in good standing must: be current in his or her stewardship and other financial obligations to the Parish, abide by all the regulations herein stated and the Parish Bylaws; and cooperate in every way for the welfare and well being of the Parish.” -Morality Classes. The Morality Seminar for Juniors and Seniors is being moved to October 20th, 2018 and May 11, 2019. -Vacation Church School. Vacation Church School will take place at St. Paul’s Orthodox Church Monday, June 25 to Friday, June 29 from 9:00 AM to 12:40 PM. Ages are 5 to 11. Registrations and information are on the glass kiosk as you enter the community center. Please turn your child’s registration into my exterior mailbox by June 8.

The Apostle’s Fast takes place from June 4 to June 29. For anyone wishing to keep the traditional fast no meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, or alcohol are to be consumed on June 6,13, 15, 20, 22, and 27. Fish and alcohol are permissible on all other days of the Apostle’s Fast while meat, eggs, and dairy products continue to not be consumed according to the fulness of our fasting tradition. Our rule of fasting, to be sure, is not intended to be a "straight-jacket" for Orthodox Christians, nor a source of pharisaical pride for anyone who keeps the fulness of the Church’s fasting discipline. It is rather the rule, the standard, against which each is to measure his own practice, and towards which we individually must always strive, according to our strength and circumstances. Whenever, for sickness or any other reason, one falls short of the rule, he applies to himself the spiritual medicine of self-reproach and strives to enter more fully into the spirit and discipline of fasting, which is indeed of great spiritual benefit to those who sincerely strive to follow it.
