Welcome! Curling has been an integral part of Weston since 1955. This year, on the 100th anniversary of Weston Golf & Country Club, the 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships will showcase not only the fantastic curling facilities at Weston but our superb hospitality as well.

At a time when there’s great interest in attracting new people to the game across Canada, we have an opportunity to help curling grow by giving our support to a group of curlers in one of the most exciting and fastest growing segments of the game of curling — mixed curling.

We have a history of hosting major curling events. In 2003, we hosted the first combined Ontario Men’s and Women’s Provincial Championships at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The National Sports Curling Classic, a cash spiel attracting top-class curlers such as Glenn Howard and Sherry Middaugh, was run at Weston for years. And the Greater Toronto Area has recently hosted several Grand Slam events.

I wish all of the athletes participating in the 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships the best of luck and a fun time in Toronto. Toronto is a fabulous city with friendly people and, when you aren’t curling or enjoying the amenities at Weston, many other amazing things to see and do.

The Toronto Curling Association has worked hard to promote the sport of curling in the GTA. Last winter the TCA operated a successful outdoor curling rink in partnership with the City of Toronto, providing many people who’d never even seen the sport a chance to try it out, and offering curlers in the GTA a way to give something back to the game we all enjoy.

Elizabeth Woolnough Chair Host Committee, 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships

Good luck and good curling!

Entertainment We’ve got some great acts playing in the Arnold Palmer Room starting at 8 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Come join us! Wednesday night: Onofrio Virdo has had a passion for classical and jazz guitar since age 13. He has played events ranging from cafes to large venues, in concerts and with symphony orchestras. Steven Wolwyn is in his second year in the Bachelor of Music program at Humber College. He also performs with the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, Onofrio’s guitar and Steven’s double bass have been described as “relaxing” and “breathtakingly beautiful.” Thursday night: Greg Wyard has been a singer, songwriter, guitarist and bass player since the age of 10. He has released three original CDs from which two songs placed in the Standard Radio National songwriting competition. An international performer, Greg has toured the US, England, Malta, Australia and Norway playing his original pop-influenced songs or covering any one of a thousand pop songs. Friday night: Bruno DiBartolomeo has been playing guitar since 1985 and teaching since 1987. A consummate working musician, Bruno has performed on several radio shows and been part of Toronto’s live music scene since 1991, including opening for Tom Cochrane. Q&A with the Icemaker Q. How long have you been making ice, and how did you learn? A. I am now in my 31st season full time; before that, I worked part time with my Dad. I was tutored by Don Campbell and mentored by Shorty Jenkins. Q. You just received the TCA’s Outstanding Contribution Award for 2014-15. Congratulations! What was that about? A. I have no idea, but I am honoured. I look at past recipients and it’s an impressive list, some very significant people in the world of curling. I am thrilled to receive this award.

When: Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 pm Where: The Fairway Dining Room

Q. Where is the most interesting place you’ve ever had to make ice? What were the challenges? A. Knoxville Tennessee in the summer; the challenge is the big ball of fire in the sky. Q. Is there anything you want to say to the competitors coming to Weston for the Canadian Mixed?

The Victory Banquet

Don Powell, Chief Ice Technician

A. I cheer for shots, not teams. My goal always is to take the ice out of the equation. I truly hope every team enjoys the week, the club and the whole experience. I am so looking forward to this! Let’s go!
