GIFT TO SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY THE WORK OF EDWARD MARSHALL BOEHM

A COLLECTION OF AMERICAN HARD~PASTE PORCELAINS BY EDWARD MARSHALL BOEHM

The special clays which, when subject to intense heat, produce the fragile translucent and delicate ware which we now call porcelain have been a subject for admiration and study for thousands of years. Ever since the first pieces were brought from China to Europe in the fifteenth century, western civilization has been fascinated by the myriad beauties and possibilities of porcelain. Its creation includes something of mystical alchemy, and immense technical competence. It is a craft which demands of its prac~ titioners untold professional devotion and great artistry. The techniques needed for building porcelain ware offer the artist an arduous, often heartbreaking, lengthy and difficult procedure. The resulting product, however, when raised to the highest level of professional ability is so exciting, so delicate in shape, color, and texture as to be one of the most rewarding art forms known to mankind. In the world of art and art collectors, the name of Edward Marshall Boehm has come to represent that rare and unusual combination of artistic genius and technical excellence which is required for the mastery of the porcelain medium. In the history of porcelain the name of Boehm must remain on a level with those of the Ming Dynasty, of the Rennaissance, Della Robbia, or Meissen. During the short productive span of his life this artist produced porcelain birds and animals which have no peer. Among the number of pieces represented in the magnificent gift to Syracuse University by Mrs. Edward Marshall Boehm are some of the earliest and experimental works of her late husband. Included are a number of the early bisque and transparent glaze animals, as well as many of the pieces which first brought recognition to the artist. There are also many of the beautiful birds in their natural setting which have brought to Boehm porcelain the admiration of museums and heads of state. In addition to these pieces given by Mrs. Boehm, a number of additional birds have already been given by collectors who have generously added work from their own collections. It is hoped that the Syracuse Collection will eventually include a complete range of all the Boehm production. The School of Art and Syracuse University are indeed honored to be the repository of the work and papers of this great artist.
