Receiving Holy Communion. If you normally receive communion in your own church you are welcome to receive communion here. If you don’t want to take communion but would like a blessing, please bring your service booklet with you to let the minister know. The normal practice in York Minster is to receive the wafer into the hand. If you prefer not to drink from the common cup, please take the wafer only. Gluten-free communion wafers are available at the communion station nearest the pulpit at the front left of the Nave. If you require a gluten-free communion wafer, please inform a Steward and make your way to the front of the Nave. When the time comes to receive communion, please ask the priest for a gluten-free wafer. If you need to receive communion in your seat please tell a Steward and this will be arranged.

Collect Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Ayleward 119.89-104 Sumsion in A Isaiah 55.1-11 Luke 4.14-30 Greater love hath no man Ireland

Words: From Psalm 25 Music: Richard Farrant 1530-80

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who his own self bare our sins in his own Body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus. Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto. God, which is your reasonable service.

Bible Sunday – October 26 In the Collect for Bible Sunday, we ask God to help us to “read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest” the holy Scriptures. In thinking about the first of these - reading the Scriptures - how might we set about this? One way is to follow a daily reading scheme. With your pew sheet this morning is a scheme which takes you through the whole of the New Testament in one year. That’s an average of just 22 verses a day. There’s a tick box against each day so that you can keep track of where you’ve got to. The scheme runs from January to December. So you are invited you to take a copy of this scheme away with you, keep it somewhere safe until New Year’s Eve, and then make a New Year’s resolution to read the New Testament throughout 2015. David Butterfield The First Sunday of the Month at 11.30 Following careful deliberations in recent months, Chapter has taken a decision to make an alteration to the pattern of worship on the first Sunday of the month. With effect from Advent Sunday this year, the BCP Solemn Eucharist (held monthly at 11.30am on the first Sunday) will be replaced by BCP Choral Matins. This will mean, therefore, that the pattern of Sunday worship will be the same every week: 8.00 10.00 11.30 4.00

Holy Communion (BCP) Sung Eucharist (Common Worship: Order One) Choral Matins (BCP) Choral Evensong (BCP)

The balance between traditional and modern language services will remain the same, with 3 of the 4 Sunday services continuing to use the Book of Common Prayer, but there will now be a consistent pattern of 2 Eucharists and 2 Choral Offices each Sunday. As it stands, the current monthly 11.30 BCP Eucharist sits rather uneasily within the Minster’s overall pattern of worship. The BCP Solemn rite is not one we use at any other time; all other

Solemn Eucharists (on Feast Days and Holy Days) have used Common Worship Order One consistently since 2010. It is also felt that we should have a more even balance of Eucharistic celebrations and choral offices each Sunday, rather than three successive Eucharistic celebrations on one Sunday (two of them choral) and reducing Matins on those occasions to a said service at 7.45. The inclusion of a fourth Choral Matins each month will mean that the choir will be able to explore and maintain a wider repertoire of music – canticle settings in particular. The mass settings currently sung at 11.30 are already part of the Eucharistic repertoire and will be maintained at the 10.00 service and at the 5.15 Solemn celebrations on Feast Days. The 11.30 BCP Solemn Eucharist will take place next on Sunday 2 November, with the new pattern coming into effect from Advent Sunday. Peter Moger, Precentor All Souls – Solemn Requiem - Monday 3 November 2014 There will be a Solemn Requiem Eucharist at 5.15 pm sung to the music of Duruflé Requiem. If you would like to submit names for the list of those to be commemorated at the service, please contact Hilary Reynolds, Precentor’s PA at Church House. [email protected] or 01904 557205. Alternatively, please hand to one of the vergers. Adult Learning Programme 2014/2015 The brochure for the Adult Learning Programme 2014/2015 is available (free of charge) today. This is the first time - certainly in recent memory - that we have been able to put together such a programme for a whole year. There are lots of exciting, interesting and different events and opportunities in this programme, ranging from Collections Unlocked – an innovative inter-active approach to learning through the exploration of objects in our Historic Collections – to a Lent Course based on films; a partnership event with City Screen commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day showing The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, followed by a public conversation with the Director of the film; lectures on science and religion, and much more. Please take a brochure for yourself and for anyone else you think might be interested. For further information please contact Chris Collingwood [[email protected] ]. Zen Group The Zen group meets on alternate Fridays from 7.30 to 9.00pm in the Old Palace, next meeting on Friday 21st November 2014. All are welcome to attend. For further information please contact Chris Collingwood [email protected] Link Visitation Scheme coming to York This Scheme aims to befriend and support anyone who is isolated or lonely and who would benefit from receiving a regular visitor. The majority of those visited are older people, but there are no age restrictions applied. The scheme relies on volunteers in order to improve and enhance the lives of elderly people and other isolated or lonely people. Volunteers are asked to give one or two hours per week, or per fortnight, to visit and offer friendship and support. There are a number of churches and church community cafes across York which would like to add this ministry their existing ones. Would your church or organisation like to be a part of this In order to use the Link Visitation model, their policy documents, insurance policy, etc all volunteers must attend their training. The first batch of volunteers can attend a free training

session on the afternoon of Monday 10th Nov 2014, 12:30 PM- 5:00 PM, Elim Corner, First Floor 47 Lawrence Street, York, YO10 3BU. To enroll for the training please email [email protected]. See http://linkvisiting.org/ for more details of the scheme. Hope For 800 - Fostering and Adoption Every day children are taken into care. They are removed from homes where there is usually great sadness and where they may have encountered chaotic, traumatic, abusive, neglectful or frightening situations. - some of them need a home in an emergency - some of them need a temporary home until they can return home - some of them need an occasional home to give their families or carers a break - some of them need a permanent home with a new family York urgently needs more foster carers. The City of York Council has asked One Voice if Christians in York could provide 20 new foster care homes. The church is ideally placed to meet this need - both in terms of finding families that want to lovingly care for children and in providing a community of support to those who do foster, through prayer and practical support. If you, or someone you know, may be interested in finding out more about this, there is a meeting on 2nd November to meet other people interested in fostering, foster carers, and Council representatives responsible for training foster carers. There will be an opportunity to ask as many questions as you like! Meeting details: Sunday 2 November 2014, 7,00pm to 8.30pm. Elim Corner, First Floor 47 Lawrence Street, York, YO10 3BU. Parking in car park behind building. You can find out more today by contacting Nigel Poulton (07845193402) or Rachel Poulton (07540826345) and visit the Home for Good website. The Minster Sound System As many of you will be aware we experience continual challenges with the Minster sound system. One of the most frequent complaints is that there are certain areas of the Nave where the spoken word is unintelligible. To help us move forward, if you experience such a problem please tell a verger and let them know exactly where you were seated (both the row and the seat), and at which point in the service the sound was poor. We will then be able to chart any particular pattern forming. Many thanks, Alex Carberry, Head Verger Book Launch Following the publication in 2013 of the Archbishop’s book, John Sentamu’s Faith Stories, a sequel entitled, John Sentamu’s Hope Stories, was launched at St-Michael-le-Belfrey on 10 October. One of the contributor’s to the book is Jasvinder Sanghera CBE, who will be giving a talk in the Minster on Thursday 12 March 2015 at 7.30pm as part of the Adult Learning Programme celebrating International Women’s Week. The event is free of charge but a ticket is required (available from the Minster Box Office). Tickets for all Adult Learning events 2014-2015 are available now. Full details of events are in the Adult Learning brochure, which is available free of charge at the welcome desks in the Minster. Please do take one if you have not received one already.

This term we have as our theme Wellbeing; the speaker will be Mike Boulton, founder of the organisation A Good Society. His title will be "Poverty: a Political Perspective". Meetings take place at York S. John University in room SK O37; we finish with Compline at around 9 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME. Community Committee Meeting 16th October 2014 This was the first Community Committee meeting since the Community Day in September. We started by having a discussion with Vicky Coates and Uschi Roberts about the Minster Coffee Mornings. The success and popularity of these weekly gatherings combined with the lack of proper catering facilities in the Minster mean that we will have to think carefully about plans for next year. We had a very useful discussion and a decision about what we are able to do next year will be taken within the next three or four months. Vicky, Uschi and all involved were congratulated on the collection of nearly £10,000 for charity this year. We planned a meeting to make a distribution of money (including this money) to charity and to plan for our charitable giving for next year. The great success of the Harvest Barn Dance was noted with thanks to the Social Committee and all involved in organising it were recorded. There was a short report on the Deanery Synod that took place only the day before our meeting. We also had a long discussion about the Community Day and planned ways that we can begin to work through all the ideas and suggestions recorded during the day. Some work from the day has influenced the Chapter’s ‘Five Year Plan’ which is being developed. Some work from the day will be acted upon over the next few weeks, but the vast majority of the work from the day will be addressed, bit by bit, by the Community Committee. We will be making a start on working with all the feedback we received concerning Social Action, the Environment and our ministry with children. The sadness felt by some at ending the monthly Solemn Eucharist (BCP) was reported – this feedback would be shared with Chapter.
