U1-Session 1

When Apathy Attacks

The Question

What leads a person toward apathy?

The Answer

Apathy creeps in when we take our eyes off our loving God and serve ourselves.

1. Doubting God’s love. Malachi 1:1-5 Who Was Malachi?

Malachi’s name literally means “my messenger.” Some think the book is anonymous, and the name comes from the Malachi 3:1 reference to “my messenger,” but it can be equally argued that he was a man whose ministry coincided with Nehemiah’s. The emphasis is clearly on the message rather than the messenger, since out of a total of 55 verses as many as 47 are the personal addresses of the Lord. The messages were given during the Persian period after the rebuilding of the temple in 515 B.C. Oracle: A communication from God. An oracle could be a divine response to a question asked or a pronouncement made by God without His being asked.

Jacob Esau

Second-born twin First-born twin Favored by Rebekah, his mother Favored by Isaac, his father Introvert and homebody Extrovert and outdoorsman Gave up a bowl of stew for the birthright Gave up birthright for a bowl of stew Received the ultimate blessing from Isaac Received a secondary blessing from Isaac At age 40, fled from home At age 40, hated and planned to kill his brother At age 60, feared his brother At age 60, content to forget the past

God Loves . . . and Hates?

Love, ’ahab, is often used in passages dealing with choosing and with faithfulness. The love mentioned in Malachi refers to God’s election of Israel for a special and exclusive relationship, continually acting in faithfulness to that relationship. • God had chosen to enter into a covenant relationship with Jacob and his descendants rather than with Esau and his descendants (Edom). This did not mean that all Jacob’s descendants would be “saved” or that all Esau’s descendants would be “lost.” The finality of Edom’s judgment does not mean that individual Edomites were forbidden from entering a covenant relationship with God by faith. • Passages such as Psalm 145:8-9,13-17; Ezekiel 18:23,32; 33:11; Matthew 5:44-45; 23:37; Acts 14:17; 1 Timothy 2:4; and 2 Peter 3:9 teach that there is a sense in which the love of God is universal. • God gave a demonstration of His hatred of evil in the way he had dealt with Edom, a pagan nation noted for its pride, treachery, greed, and violence. • God reminded Israel that He was constantly providing for them and looking out for their welfare, but for those who served themselves and resorted to their own wicked ways (like the people of Edom), He allowed them to come to the destruction they incurred because of their sins. “The knowledge that one has been chosen by God for an intimate relationship and that God will always act in accordance with that relationship should make a profound difference in the way we handle obstacles, failure, disappointment, strife, and human antagonism.” –Ray Clendenen

How do you see God’s love around you?

2. Offering our second best. Malachi 1:6-10

Despised To consider insignificant or view with contempt. Just the opposite of reverence. When we don’t come to worship with our best, we are showing contempt, treating God as if He is insignificant. Defiled We think of pollution as the introduction of some contaminant in an environment where it doesn’t belong. The Hebrew word used here captures the idea of something abhorrent, loathsome, or disgusting. They were not offering the things God wanted, and therefore, the things they were offering were contaminants that didn’t belong. The animal offered could be a young bull, lamb, goat, turtledove, or young pigeon, but it had to be a perfect and complete specimen. Anything less would not be offering their best. How fully engaged am I when I come to worship? Am I giving God my best in worship? or my second best?

3. Forgetting whom we serve. Malachi 1:11-14

The things in a worship service I like (or dislike): Are my feelings based on what honors and pleases God . . . or on my own personal preferences? Israel’s leaders and priests failed to respond to life’s challenges, which led to a loss of the delight in the Lord that produces genuine worship. Service to God will look like a nuisance to anyone who maintains the activity without the gratitude and love behind it. Apathy creeps in when we take our eyes off our loving God and serve ourselves.

So What?

I know God loves me because: I choose to respond to God’s love for me by: Things I can use or give to God as an act of worship: Doing it this way would mean I’m giving God my second best: Doing it this way would mean I’m giving God my best: In most churches, we treat worship like the theater. The ministers/leaders are the actors, God is the offstage prompter, and the congregation is the audience. Authentic worship, however, means the congregation is made up of the actors, the ministers/leaders are the ones prompting the congregation, and God is the audience. —Adapted from Sören Kierkegaard, Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing

ABC Plan of Salvation How to Become a Christian ADMIT

Admit to God that you are a sinner. Repent, turning away from your sin. Romans 3:23; 6:23; Acts 3:19

BELIEVE By faith receive Jesus Christ as God’s Son and accept Jesus’ gift of forgiveness from sin. John 3:16; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:11-13

I believe Jesus died for my sin and only through faith in His death and resurrection can I be forgiven. I now turn from my sin and ask Jesus to come into my life as my Savior and Lord. From this day forward, I will choose to follow Jesus. Thank You, Lord, for loving me and for forgiving me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.” After you have received Jesus Christ into your life, share your decision with another person, and following Christ’s example, ask for baptism by immersion in your local church as a public expression of your faith. Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:6

The KNOWN Strategy: KNOW, OWN and KNOWN How did Jesus develop? According to Luke 2:52, He “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people,” and we believe students should develop the same way. By combining Luke 2:52 with the Sermon on the Mount, LifeWay Student Ministry has developed a strategy that will equip students to KNOW God, OWN their faith, and make their faith KNOWN. Lordship and discipleship are foundational for students to KNOW Christ. As students develop, not only will they recognize and respond to the lordship of Christ, they will begin to practice spiritual disciplines—developing skills such as prayer, Scripture memory, and stewardship. What does it take for a student to OWN his or her faith? Character and discernment are essentials. As students develop and demonstrate Christ’s character and begin to trust the authority of Scripture, they will make wise decisions and assume responsibility for those decisions. Making Christ KNOWN is the outward expression of a student’s inward spiritual development and is seen in the relationships students develop and influence they possess. As students develop godly relationships, they will make an intentional impact on others.
