Study Abroad Program – TROPICAL LIVING - BALI

SPORT & PHYSIOTHERAPHY

Udayana University offers another new study abroad program in Sport Science and Physiotherapy under the Faculty of Engineering; and Department of Physiotherapy, Medicine Faculty. It is a comprehensive course that covers theories, practices, physical training, workshop and excursions, designed for university students or sport professionals. The course is offered every semester; run within 16 weeks; and all subjects are credited into European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The maximum amount of credits to be earned is 30-40 ECTS. The modules offered in 2 packages of courses, (A) Semester Program: which include 2 subjects in Sport Physiotherapy, 2 subjects in Fitness and Well being, and another 2 subjects in Social sciences. (B) Short Course “Water Sports”: offered in the form of 2 weeks workshop and outdoor activities, with total credits 10 ECTS.

Modules for 2-week course in Sport & Physiotherapy: Water Sports: includes wave surf, wind surf, river rafting and diving

Eligibility: nd Bachelor or Master students from 2 semester of study from background of Sport Science, Physiotherapy, Physical Education or Medicine are eligible to join the study abroad program. Sport practitioners and other related professionals are also welcome to participate in this course.

Course Description: As the island of Bali offers various types of beach and stunning landscapes filled with adventurous rivers, the water sports become an integral part of local daily activities. This course takes the nature potentials of perfect ocean waves, deep blue coral reefs, Spring Rivers and local tradition of yoga practices as perfect conditions and study materials to learn techniques in water sports. Whether you have never done any kind of water sports before, this course through careful training enables you to attain basic skills in water sports. Study  Abroad  Program     (C) Semester Program: the module of Water Sports is one of 6 subjects offered in the Study Abroad Program: Sport and Physiotherapy. The length of the course is 16 weeks offered 30 ECTS in total. (D) Short Course “Water Sports”: offered in the form of 2 weeks workshop and outdoor activities, with total ECTS earned 10 credits.

Learning Objectives: • • •

The course is intended to equip students with basic skills in water sports such as wave surfing, wind surfing, river rafting and diving. By the end of the course, students will understand the core technique of water sports; gain basic skills in various water sports as well as yoga training. Students are trained for the next level of course to become a water sport instructor

Course content: Topics 1

Introduction to Bali landscapes and available water sports Brief about Bali island, the topography, landscape, water area. At glance about the culture, traditions and potentials of water sports

Bali Green Surf. First day of outdoor activities. Introduction to the coaches from Bali Green Surf. Being familiar with the beach, waves, winds and the water sport equipments. Understand the surfing area, types of surfboards and how they work.

Surfing techniques and exercise. Takes place in the most popular beach in Bali; Kuta Beach. Some basic techniques are introduced and simple trainings are introduced from padling, popping up, paddle out to the surf and catch the waves.

Surfboard Workshop. A special full day workshop to traditionally make surfboard that fits surfer’s need. Students will be provided with materials for making the surfboard and will work closely with local craftmen

Surfing Training & Exercise. Provides texhniques and scicence how to keep physical and mental state in balance. It starts with surfing fitness includes such workouts as core strength, upper body strength, lower body strength, flexibility, streching and yoga. The lesson continues in the water, to catch different waves and to reach confident level in surfing.

Wind Surfing: Brief about character of the beach; Sanur Beach. Understanding the winds and windsurf sport concept, knowing the windsurf kit: the board and the ring, the dagger board. Exercising widnsurf fitness and finally start windsurfing.

River Rafting; Participants will have the opportunities to enjoy the Bali’s landscape of Bali, mountains and valleys along the spring river in Ubud regency. This outdoor sport activity will be started with brief about the area, the river and continue to the concept of rafting for sports. Semester Break Diving: The class will take place in Tulamben, Northern Bali. Students will learn how to dive as well as practicing social work by assisting the locals with their under water projects. It starts with the diving philosophy, the importance of knowledge in replacing the fear and fantasy, safety rules, and diving equipment. Understand the risk, develop the technigues and skills through comfort. Experience the underwater live, the wrecks and atthe same time enjoy the sport.

Yoga Science, After intensive new water sport activities, students will be introduced the Bali’s concept of balance and harmony through out their daily lives as well as through sports. The brief about philosophy of yoga, the types, the concept and benefits of yoga in water sports are described in this class. Yoga Exercise: Several exercises of yogas will be introduced in relation to balance and harmony that influenced fitness in water sports. Studetns may have the opportunity to taylor some yoga postures, which fit their health conditions and needs.

Balinese Dance; Philosophy and theory of Balinese dance in the fire and water. Knowing the relation of sports and arts, understand the physical movements and the music. Simple training of dances and traditional fitness.

Description This course has consisted of two main parts. The first part, four weekly meetings will be given in the form of lectures, focusing in history. Particular attention is given on historiography of nation-building, religions, society and culture of Indonesia. Students will introduce assigned readings and choose a specific topic for group research (a group of five), culminating in a paper of about 20 pages and give presentation before the class.
