HOW TO BUY AT MOSSGREEN AUCTIONS 4

We have compiled the following guide to assist you with the exciting process that is bidding at auction.

Viewing Mossgreen’s printed catalogues are available approximately two weeks prior to an auction sale date. Online catalogues are posted at www.mossgreen.com.au approximately three weeks prior to the auction date. Catalogues can be subscribed to yearly, or you can collect a complimentary copy at the viewing. The viewing days are typically the three or four days prior to the Auction date from 10.00am–5.00pm at the location/s printed in the catalogue and on the website.

LOT DESCRIPTIONS are the basic catalogue information given such as dimensions, date or age, medium, attribution, provenance, quantity and so on. All lots are guaranteed for 30 days from the auction date. The website gives a clear size guide in relation to the average sized person, as well as signature and multi-view details for selected higher priced items.

ESTIMATES are printed for all lots and can take into account rarity, condition, quality and provenance. The reserve is the undisclosed confidential amount at, or below the low estimate for which the lot is buyable at. The reserve will never exceed the low estimate at Mossgreen and many lots are sold without reserve.

TALK TO OUR SPECIALISTS who are always happy to discuss any lot with you in greater detail. Their contact details for a particular sale are published in each appropriate catalogue and on the website.

CONDITION REPORTS are available upon request. These supplement the catalogue description and provide guidance on a lot’s condition. They are advisable to obtain if you cannot view the item in person and have any queries. Please send email request to: [email protected]

SYMBOLS occasionally, a symbol is printed next to a lot number, indicating a special clause regarding the sale of that lot – you may come across the following at our sales: † GST on HAMMER, meaning this GST added onto not just the Buyers Premium, but the hammer price also. § Artist copyright resale royalty, meaning that this lot is subject to an artist’s resale royalty.

Bidding Mossgreen Auctions offers all clients four options to bid at our auctions:

1. AT THE AUCTION Experience the excitement, theatre and fun of bidding at a live auction. To bid in person, make sure you arrive with enough time to register for a bidding number, and if you haven’t purchased with Mossgreen before then you will need to bring along some photo identification such as a driver’s licence or passport.

2. TELEPHONE BIDDING The perfect solution for when you can’t attend in person. Mossgreen staff bid individually with you over the telephone, relaying each bid and what is happening in the room itself and will bid on your behalf upon your instructions. Please note that telephone bids must be organised with at least 24 hours notice, and that on occasion telephone bids will be limited if the auction is offsite. You will be advised if this is the case in the catalogue and on the website. To organise a telephone bid please refer to the telephone bidding page at the back of this catalogue. The “Cover Bid” section is optional, however useful if you are uncontactable at the last minute, or the telephone line drops out- you are authorising Mossgreen to bid to that amount on your behalf. Mossgreen offers telephone bids on all lots, in all auctions.

3. ABSENTEE BIDS The ideal solution when you can’t attend in person, action a telephone bid, or simply have a budget you wish to stick to. An absentee bid requires your maximum bid to be recorded for the lot numbers you are interested in bidding on, and should the

lot be knocked down to a lesser amount than recorded under your number, and you are the highest bidder on the auctioneer’s book, then the lot will be sold to you for the lesser hammer price. Please note absentee bids must be received no later than 24 hours prior to the auction commencement time. To organise an absentee bid, please refer to the absentee bidding form at the back of this catalogue, and further details are available in the Terms and Conditions of Sale section, also at the back of this catalogue. An email must be supplied at the time of submitting your absentee bid, along with a clear copy of your photo identification if you have not purchased with Mossgreen before.

4. ONLINE BIDDING Mossgreen Live is an online bidding service created exclusively for Mossgreen clients. You may register at www.mossgreen.com. au. Please note there is no additional commission added for lots purchased via Mossgreen Live. Alternatively you may bid via LiveAuctioneers.com. Please note lots purchased via LiveAuctioneers.com are subject to a 3% commission charge.

INTERNATIONAL BIDDING If you are an international bidder who has not purchased with Mossgreen before, you must make sure your identification, your signed bidding form and a deposit at our discretion has arrived and is confirmed prior to the auction date. This deposit is refundable within 48 hours should you not be successful. If you are successful it will be deducted from your purchase total and any remaining balance must be paid via direct deposit. Bank details are provided in the Payment section at the back of this catalogue.

Payment & Collection YOUR FINAL INVOICE

DELIVERY

If you are successful you will receive your invoice emailed to you, and you will pay the hammer price of your lots, plus the buyer’s premium on each lot – 17% plus GST, together with any additional applicable charges such as GST on hammer, or the Artist Resale Royalty if applicable.

Small items can be wrapped by Mossgreen following payment and inspection of your items, and larger items can be packaged into boxes or bubble-wrapped for your convenience. Please note, should you request Mossgreen to pack your items for you, we take no responsibility for any breakages. Mossgreen is happy to assist and provide you with recommended transport companies whether it be a local, interstate or international delivery.

Payments must be made in full by the final collection day after the auction date as printed in the catalogue. Personal, company and bank cheques are not accepted. We accept Eftpos, (up to $1,000AUD or your daily limit), direct deposit or credit card (2.2% merchant fee for Visa and Mastercard or 3.3% for American Express). Please note that credit card transactions over $5,000 will not be accepted over the telephone unless by prior arrangement. Up to $10,000AUD can accepted in cash, and for any amount over this, it must be deposited directly into a Bank of Melbourne / St George branch. Please refer to the Payment Form at the back of this catalogue for further details.

STORAGE All items must be paid for and collected within the collection times advertised for each individual auction. If items are not collected within this time-frame, Mossgreen reserves the right to charge removal and storage fees.

CATALOGUE INTRODUCTION APRIL 2015

1. Welcome to Mossgreen’s first auction to be held in Sydney. Most appropriately, it is devoted to the philately of New South Wales, and will be conducted in Sydney, the day after the National Exhibition winds up at Hurstville. Charles Leski, Nick Anning and I hope to see you at our booth Stand 2 - where we will have viewing for the auction, and the opportunity for a chat. We will also be pleased to accept material for our upcoming sales. 2. The first auctions since Prestige Philately merged with Mossgreen took place at Armadale on 5th and 6th March. It was my first experience using an online bidding platform, and the first time since 1979 that I have used a different set of bidding steps. There were a few minor glitches but it all went rather well. Across the two sales, we cleared 82% of the lots, with the total hammer right on our total pre-sale estimates of $1.1 million. The numerous happy vendors and excited buyers were testament to an excellent outcome. 3. During the morning session on the Friday, I was delighted to announce that Mossgreen has been selected by Arthur Gray to sell his fabulous King George V Heads and Commemoratives, both of which are the best collections ever assembled, and both of which have been awarded multiple Large Gold Medals at World Exhibitions. Arthur has been a formidable presence in auction rooms around the globe for more than 30 years, and his competitors will be pleased to know that he will no longer be locking horns with them, at least for KGV material. The two exhibit collections will be offered at public auction in Melbourne in October of this year. We expect the balance of Arthur’s KGV material will be presented in two further auctions during 2016. 4. At Mossgreen, we are committed to bringing to our clients the very best philatelic material. This sale, though not of the same scale or value as Arthur Gray’s KGV, more than adequately fills the bill. The 100 lots of Sydney Views amount to one of the highest quality selections ever offered at auction. Similarly, the quality of the Laureates, stamps notorious for their lack of adequate margins, is extraordinary. The Diadems feature beautiful stamps with large margins and an array of the rare and desirable Major Retouches. As has been noted elsewhere, when you encounter top-grade Classic Era stamps, you are confronted by “Art in Miniature”, which is why we have no hesitation in providing enlargements of virtually every stamp from the early period. The small-format stamps designed by De La Rue have traditionally been the poor relations of NSW philately. This area includes some of the rarest of all Australian stamps, but you wouldn’t know it from the unintimidating prices in Gibbons, or from our attractive estimates. The opportunity here is for someone to acquire the basis for a significant collection/exhibit for a relatively modest outlay. The 5/- Coin issues, the gorgeous Queen Victoria high values, the always popular Centennial Series and the still under-appreciated Commonwealth Period issues, are replete

with rarities and other highly graded material. Again, there is potential to acquire stimulating studies without breaking the bank. One collecting field that is gaining in popularity is blocks of stamps, for which interested clients will have a field day. Of particular note are the many used multiples, items that are generally far more elusive than the comparable but usually more expensive mint blocks. Fine used blocks of even common stamps are quite elusive, and the higher the denomination, the harder they generally are to acquire. Another field that is at the same time neglected, but popular in some quarters, is perfins. The late Guy Hutson’s collection of official perfins offered intact - Lot 284 - represents an unusual opportunity. This material has not been properly researched or recorded and, at estimate, looks to be a redhot bargain. Moving on to the extensive Postal History section, mostly from overseas vendors, 30 pre-stamp items are a feature, and I would draw particular attention to Lot 304, a contemporary account of the Myall Creek Massacre from an eye-witness to the hanging of the seven convicted white perpetrators. Lot 305, in addition to the marvellous undated ‘YASS/NSW/POST OFFICE’ handstamp, contains a petition for extension of the mail service to the Murray River. These are wonderful historical documents from the first 50 years of white settlement. The stamp period also includes many delightful covers, scarce and attractive frankings, and rarely encountered destinations. Elusive postmarks are a constant theme. Don’t miss Lot 329, possibly the earliest contemporary account in private hands of the discovery of gold near Bathurst, and Lot 349, the only cover we have seen with the rare diamondshaped ‘OPENED/DEAD LETTER OFFICE SYDNEY/…’ label. 5. The sale catalogue and the additional illustrations to be found on our website are designed to excite your interest. However, there is no substitute for personal inspection to appreciate the quality and freshness of the material on offer. We therefore encourage you to view the sale at our spacious facilities in Armadale, where you can also enjoy the refined ambience of the Mossgreen Tea Rooms. In addition, all lots can be perused at our booth - Stand #2 - at the National Exhibition in Sydney between Thursday 16th and Sunday 19th April. The auction will be held on Monday 20th April at the rooms of our Sydney agent, Martyn Cook Galleries, 98 Barcom Avenue, Rushcutters Bay. Finally, and as always, I wish you success with your bidding.

Gary Watson and your Team at Mossgreen: June Treweek, Nick Anning, Yang Liu, Yoga Ganason, and Charles Leski (Consultant).

NOTES ON “SYDNEY VIEWS” & OTHER CLASSIC ISSUES SHADES

PLATE POSITIONS

One of the perennial challenges with collecting stamps is distinguishing between different printings and shades: viz Bermuda Keyplates. This is especially the case with stamps that are more than 150 years old.

Anybody who has ever done it will know that plating Classic stamps is a time-consuming and often frustrating undertaking. We simply lack the time to do plating, or to confirm the conclusions of others. Therefore, as with colour/shade assessments, we have in almost every case accepted the plate positions ascribed by the eminent former owners, and/or pencilled on the back of stamps.

We have carefully assessed the shades of the Classic period stamps being offered in this sale, and have endeavoured to assign them to the appropriate listings in the standard reference, the Stanley Gibbons “British Empire” catalogue (2015 edition). Unfortunately, some shade descriptors in the catalogue are unhelpful, or questionable. Add to this the subjective element of colour acuity and it is inevitable that disagreements will be encountered. Our assessments have been guided and informed by the esteemed philatelists from whose collections this material emanated. It is to be expected that Messrs Ginger, Hutson, Dankin and Haden knew their stuff. In only a few cases have we taken issue with their conclusions on shades.

The plate positions, where indicated, are mentioned in square brackets: eg [14]. We expect that they are all correct. However, if this element is important to you, we do recommend that you carry out your own inspection. ** IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that a disagreement about shade or plating is not grounds for returning a stamp.

We are confident that most, and hopefully all, of the shades quoted are correct as per the Gibbons listings. However, your best protection in this regard is personal inspection of the actual stamps. For viewing times in Melbourne and Sydney, see page 7 of this catalogue.

EXPERT CERTIFICATES Many stamps in this sale are accompanied by certificates of authenticity. For all Australian stamps, we recommend and utilise the services of the Expert Committee of the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria (RPSofV). The fixed cost of $150 per submission, including our administration fee, is a modest investment to ensure your peace of mind. If you wish to bid for a lot subject to obtaining a “clear” certificate, you should request an “extension” before the auction commences. This can be done on your bidsheet, by phone or email, or during our viewing sessions. Please see Paragraph 11 “Extensions” in our “Terms & Conditions of Sale” on page 11.

10

UNDERSTANDING OUR SYMBOLS & UNIQUE GRADING SYSTEM At Prestige Philately we utilise much the same symbols as other firms, but with some additional categories that you should be aware of. We are the only major firm in the world that actually grades the quality of the material we offer. While some clients have struggled with the whole concept of grading, most have clearly embraced the idea and we receive much favourable comment about the system. It is important that you understand our Grading System because the symbols used form part of the lot description. We are confident that once you are comfortable with our gradings, you will always be satisfied with the quality of the material you purchase from us. And, in the event that we have missed a tear or a thin and consequently overgraded an item, we WANT you to return it. We stand behind the Prestige Grading System.

repaired and improved to the grade indicated by the letter. The brackets indicate a qualified grading, the cause for which will be mentioned in the description of the lot. 4. The fourth column is relevant to perforated stamps, and also to lots listed under the sub-heading ‘Postmarks’.

For perforated stamps, this column gives a grading for both centring and perforations. The letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ relates to centring. ‘A’ stamps are very well centred; ‘B’ stamps are slightly off-centre; ‘C’ stamps are significantly off-centre, and may have the perforations slightly into the design; ‘D’ stamps are badly off-centre, with the perforations well into the design.

[NB:These gradings are the same for all perforated issues, whether Australian Decimals, De La Rue Colonial keyplates or 19th Century American issues. However, it should be understood that for many issues poor centring is the norm. Thus ‘C’, and even ‘D’, gradings should be expected and accepted. For such issues a ‘B’ stamp will be above-average and an ‘A’ stamp will be considered an exceptional copy.]

Following the letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ is a number ‘1’ to ‘4’. A stamp with all perforations intact is ‘1’. One or two short perfs, or normal rough perforations, will drop the grading to ‘2’. More notable perforation problems such as the perfs down one side being trimmed will result in a ‘3’ grading. A stamp with major perforation faults will be a ‘4’.

[NB:A stamp graded ‘A1’ is well-centred with all perforations intact. In many cases, particularly with modern issues, this is the norm. However, for many issues, ‘B2’ or even ‘C3’ may be normal and quite acceptable.]

For lots listed under the sub-headings “Postmarks” and “Ship/Paquebot Markings”, or similar, this column gives a grading for quality of the strike of the marking itself, and completeness. Quality is graded from ‘A’ (very fine) to ‘D’ (poor). Completeness is graded from ‘1’ (complete) to ‘5’ (identifiable only). ‘+’ is used for superb strikes; ‘-’ is used for postmarks that are lightly struck, a little doubled, or otherwise a bit short of the mark.

1. Firstly, we have the lot number. If it is in bold and printed in bright red, the item is illustrated: e.g. 1234. (The actual location of the illustration is given at the end of the description: e.g. {Page 41.8} is position 8 on page 41.) 2.

The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot: **

5. The symbols in the second, third and fourth columns, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.

3. The third column gives an overall quality assessment for the lot, from ‘A’ to ‘D’. The same standard applies to mint and used stamps, to covers, postal stationery, literature etc. An item graded ‘A’ is very fine; it has no faults. ‘B’ items are fine and may have minor imperfections. A ‘C’ item will exhibit obvious faults. Items in poor condition are rated ‘D’.

6. Figures in the right-hand column are our estimate of value. (If a lot attracts tax for Australian buyers, the estimate is in green, followed by a small "T".) You may bid at, above or below estimate. The reserve price for almost every lot is 75% of estimate (rounded to the nearest bidding step). Bids below this level will not be considered.

7. We use the following standardised abbreviations:

Occasionally, an item in truly superb condition will be rated ‘A+’. This grading is used sparingly and is not applied to modern material, which one would normally expect to be in very fine to superb condition. An otherwise very fine item which has a subsidiary problem may be allocated an ‘A-’. This may be a stamp with writing or a hinge remainder on the reverse. A cover may have a receiver’s endorsement on the face. The halves of a letter card may be stuck together. A book may have a previous owner’s notations. Whether this factor makes the item an ‘A-’ or ‘B’ is a matter of degree. NB: An expertiser’s signature or handstamp on a cover or the reverse of a stamp will not normally be cause for downgrading the quality of an item: such marks will be mentioned and you should make your decision as to whether or not such an item is of the standard that you personally require. Occasionally, the symbol ‘A’ to ‘C’ will appear in brackets: eg (B). This signifies that the item has been renovated or

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE (as at 20 March 2015)

1. AUCTIONEER

6. LIVE INTERNET BIDDING

10. RETURN OF LOTS

Mossgreen Auctions (Mossgreen), a company incorporated in the State of Victoria, is the auctioneer, and adheres to the standard terms of sale of the Australasian Philatelic Traders Association.

Bidding from your own computer during the auction is available. However, clients wishing to use this service must contact Mossgreen at least 24 hours before the auction.

Australian law requires that GST equal to 10% of the knock-down or sale price of a taxed lot shall be payable by the buyer, unless the taxed lot is exported to another country. Taxed lots are indicated in the catalogue by a dagger symbol following the estimate figure: eg 150 T. GST equal to 10% of the amount of any fees or charges added by Mossgreen is also payable by Australian buyers.

A lot may be returned, within a reasonable time, only because of an error in the description: see clause 2 for the definition of “the description”. A lot that has been inspected by the buyer or by the buyer’s agent cannot be returned for any reason. A lot that is illustrated in the catalogue or of which an illustration has been supplied to the buyer or to the buyer’s agent cannot be returned for any reason that is apparent from the illustration. A lot expressed to be a “range”, “group”, “selection”, “array”, “collection”, “accumulation” or similar, or any other lot containing more than 10 items - excepting sets of stamps - is always offered “as is” and cannot be returned for any reason. Similarly, other lots offered “as is” cannot be returned.

8. BUYER

11. “EXTENSIONS”

The buyer of a lot shall be the person to whom the lot is sold (“knocked-down”) by Mossgreen. In the event of equal bids being received, the earliest such bid shall be successful. In the event of a dispute, Mossgreen shall have absolute discretion in the settling of the dispute. A lot is at the buyer’s risk once it has been sold (“knocked-down”) but ownership (legal title) will not pass to the buyer until Mossgreen has received payment in full for the lot

A request for an extension to submit a lot to a recognised expert or expert committee for a Certificate of Authenticity must be made in writing prior to or on the day of the auction. Mossgreen shall have an absolute discretion not to grant an extension. [In particular, an extension will not normally be granted if the lot is offered with a recent Certificate of Authenticity or if the stamp(s) has/have perforated initials (perfins).] If an extension is granted, the buyer must make payment in full for the lot including the buyer’s premium, in accordance with the terms of Paragraph 9. The amount paid including the buyer’s premium will be refunded in full if the lot is returned with an acceptable “bad” Certificate. All costs associated with obtaining a certificate shall be borne by the buyer, unless the lot is found to be not as identified in the catalogue, in which case all costs associated with obtaining the Certificate shall be refunded to the buyer, and borne by the seller. A lot described as being defective in any way may not be returned should the Certificate obtained mention any fault not noted in the lot description. The buyer shall not be entitled to reject an item if the certificate includes any finding that does not materially affect the grading of the lot. Unless otherwise agreed, nomination of the appropriate expert or expert committee shall be made by Mossgreen, and Mossgreen will be responsible for submitting the lot to that expert or expert committee. NB: Should Mossgreen agree to the buyer’s nomination of an expert or expert committee, the extension granted will be for a period of no more than 90 days from the date of the auction. If a Certificate has not been obtained within 90 days from the date of the auction, the extension shall lapse and Mossgreen may thereafter refuse to accept the return of the lot.

2. DESCRIPTIONS We endeavour to describe lots fully and accurately. The description of a lot comprises 1) the codes to the left of the description; 2) the description; and 3) any illustration of the lot or part of the lot. (The various codes and symbols are explained on the previous page).

3. ESTIMATES The figure in the right-hand column following each lot description is a usually conservative estimate of the auction value of the lot in Australian dollars. A bidder may bid at, above or below the estimate. Bids below the reserve price (usually 75% of the estimate) will not be accepted. There is no reserve on lots listed at $50 or less, or lots for which the word “Offer” is used in place of the estimate..

4. BIDDING Bids may be made to Mossgreen from the company’s website, by mail, by fax, or by e-mail. Bids may also be made in person, by phone or from the internet during the auction (by prior arrangement) or through an agent attending an auction. An agent must advise Mossgreen of the person(s) for whom bids are being submitted or else the agent will be personally liable for payment and delivery of any lots purchased. Mossgreen reserves the right to refuse any bid, or to refuse bids from any person, for any reason. In most cases, Mossgreen’s bidding steps are as follows: Increment Amount

Mossgreen reserves the right to raise or lower postal bids (depending on the bidder’s apparent intention) to conform to these bidding steps.

5. TELEPHONE BIDDING Bidding by telephone during the course of a public auction is permitted. However, clients wishing to use this service must contact Mossgreen at least 24 hours before the auction regarding the special conditions that apply. [To see these special conditions, go to www.prestigephilately.com from where the “Assistance for Phone Bidders” can be read and downloaded.]

7. GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST)

9. PAYMENT Payment is due immediately a lot is sold, or immediately upon receipt of an invoice. In addition to the price for which a lot is sold, the buyer shall pay a premium of 17% of that price, plus any fees for postage packing and insurance applicable or credit card fees that are charged by Mossgreen, plus GST as appropriate. (Payment should always be made in Australian dollars. If payment is made in another currency the buyer shall add the equivalent of $A50 or 3% of the invoice total, whichever is higher, towards bank fees. In the event that the buyer does not make payment in full for the lot(s) within 30 days from the date of the invoice, Mossgreen shall have the right to exercise any one or more of the following rights and remedies 1) To impose an accounting fee of $100 per month (or part thereof) plus compound interest at the rate of 5% per month (or part thereof) of the total amount outstanding; 2) To terminate the contract with the buyer, in which case any monies received from the buyer shall be forfeited to Mossgreen; 3) To terminate the contract and resell the lot(s) at any time, in which case any resulting shortfall, plus costs including accounting fees, interest, insurance and resale expenses, shall be met by the original buyer;

12. GOVERNING LAW

4) To apply any monies due at any time from Mossgreen to the buyer in payment of the outstanding amount;

These Terms of Sale shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria.

5) To take legal action against the buyer for damages for breach of contract.

13.

Payment by credit card will incur a surcharge of 2% for MasterCard and Visa payments and 3% for Amex payments, plus GST.

Submitting a bid by any method constitutes acknowledgment and acceptance of these Terms of Sale.

NEW SOUTH WALES - 1850-51 Sydney Views At the turn of the 20th Century, "Sydney Views" were considered one of the most important Classic issues of the world. Many serious philatelists included Australia's first stamps in their collections. We are glad to see that, after many years in the doldrums, interest in these primitive but delightful stamps is on the rise. Apart from items Ex Carrington and Hutson, the stamps in this section are from the exceptional collection formed by the late Michael Haden from Sydney. The quality throughout is quite remarkable, with most lots graded 'A' or better; more than a quarter of the lots have received our tap grading of 'A+'. [For guidance regarding shades and plate positions, please see the commentary on Page 9]

1871-1902 Wmk '36' 9d perforated proofs on very thick ungummed unwatermarked paper, in brownish black, deep blue-slate, deep bluish grey, myrtle-green, blue, bright violet, magenta, dull orange, bright orange and carmine, a couple of really insignificant blemishes otherwise very fine to superb. An enchanting "set" of exquisite freshness and great rarity. [The number of different colours produced is unknown. Examples in black, pale orange-red & deep violet sold at the Prestige auction of 22/2/2013 for $2586. They are the only other examples known to us] Basset Hull Vol II at pp244-245 states that a 9d denomination was requested in 1871. In fact, six sheets of a 9d value were printed on Wmk '2' paper but all were later destroyed. Basset Hull makes no mention of the 9d design & it may have been that shown here. However, it seems remarkable that the creation of a new die and plate should pass without mention. Authority was subsequently given to surcharge the sheets of the now redundant 10d, printed in brown, and Hutson mentions a pair of 9d surcharge essays in the Royal Collection. In 1876, De La Rue was requested to prepare a 1/- design, which is the same design as this 9d. The thick plottens! It is possible that the 9d proofs were prepared in Sydney. They are on the same thick stock used for colour trials of the 1897 Jubilee values that were produced entirely in the Colony. Basset Hull states those items were "die proofs" produced by a "photo-mechanical" process: presumably he means they were proofs derived from the die, rather than struck from the die. The thick paper suggests these proofs also derive from c.1897. However, the 9d proofs are not of a photographic nature. Could they have been struck directly from a 9d die that was supplied by De La Rue to NSW as early as 1871?$10,000

NEW SOUTH WALES - 1885-1904 Queen Victoria High Values Many collectors have found it difficult to distinguish between the different printings of these attractive stamps. The 'NSW' watermark is often difficult to discern, let alone measure. However, this is not generally required. All the 1885-86 values are on bluish paper, while most of the later printings are on white paper. To distinguish between the black and blue overprints often requires inspection under a magnifier & strong light.

Ex Guy Hutson. Most such errors usually go directly to collectors and are stored with care. This item was bought by someone who was probably annoyed at the inconveience caused by the absence of "holes n teeth". He casually folded the block so it would fit in his pocket. However, after he had amateurishly separated some of the stamps he either thought better of it or, more likely, somebody else suggested he cease & desist from causing criminal damage to a philatelic rarity. This is not simply conjecture: there is a pencil notation on the reverse of the right-hand margin stating "Bought at PO in Narrabri by A Cocks Lands Dept". 1819 entire headed "Parramatta NSWales/12th June 1819" and signed "Geo Tho Palmer" to "Dingle/Ireland" variously rated "2/2", then "3/8" & finally "5/6", light but fine 'SHIP LETTER/ [crown]/26OC26/1819/LONDON' transit cds, professionally cleaned & with some archival tape backing. A very early "country" letter, believed to be the earliest recorded letter to the British Isles from outside Sydney. The remarkably quick passage of only 18 weeks is explained by the writer: "This letter goes by a whaler direct to England, which is to sail tomorrow: her name is the Foxhound" and in a postscript "I beg to apologize for the slovenliness of this hasty scrawl. I reside 15 miles from Sydney, and an opportunity offers for sending it, which I am likely to lose but for the haste". George Thomas Palmer arrived at Sydney in 1806 as a lieutenant with the 61st Regiment but with permission to settle there. Governor Macquarie held him in high regard. He became a major landholder, establishing "Pemberton Grange" near Parramatta, and was one of the earliest settlers of the Canberra district, taking-up 13,000 acres at Ginninderra. $3,000†

PO 1/3/1828. [The country post offices received handstamps only from March 1828. Very few pre1830s examples are recorded. Ex Michael Lewin: inadvertently omitted from our auction of 5/3/2015. The writer speaks at length, and accurately, of "a circumstance which has much agitated the Public mind...stockmen in the Interior having had their Master's Cattle speared by the Native Aborigines were determined on revenging themselves...Falling in with a tribe of strange Blacks...totally innocent of the charge for which they were slaughtered without having given the slightest provocation... having bound their hands and fastened them together took them into a remote part of the Bush and there in cold blood murdered every soul of them after which they piled them in a heap and burnt their bodies...The men were brought to justice tried twice...found guilty...The 7 who were tried are all to be hanged..." and in a postscript "Tuesday 18th I have just returned from seeing the seven men all launched into eternity at the same moment it was an awful Sight and has made me feel quite sick. I shall never forget it". The Myall Creek Massacre occurred on 10th June 1838, near Namoi, and was a watershed event in the decline of relations between black & white inhabitants. The convicted stockmen were "assigned convicts" but their leader was a freeman. The murdered aborigines were mainly women, children & old men. Most were killed with swords, some of the children being beheaded. The executions of the perpetrators polarised opinion in the Colony. Many settlers were appalled at the treatment of the indigines. However, the majority of landowners were outraged: William Charles Wentworth and others typically characterised the outcome as "judicial murder". Chillingly, the first Queensland parliament passed a law that no white man could be prosecuted for killing an aborigine. I am of opinion that the Public officers named in the 5th Section are entitled to receive and to send all letters on public service free of postage whether from or to a place beyond Sea or not..." Ex Hans Karman (2004), & illustrated in full in "Australian Privileged Mail" by Karman (2003). A letter of the highest postal history importance. John Hubert Plunkett was appointed Solicitor-General in 1832 and Attorney-General in 1836. He is notable as the first Catholic appointed to high office in Australia. As Attorney-General, he extended jury rights & the protection of the law to convicts. He also secured convictions against seven whites found guilty of massacring aborigines at Myall Creek: see also Lot 304. Plunkett was proudest of the Church Act of 1836 that established legal equality for Catholics. An historically important sailing. ["Chusan" departed Southampton 5/5/1852, via Cape Town, arrived at Sydney 3/8/1852. This was the first of only two P&O experimental voyages via the Cape prior to the company being awarded the packet contract in 1853. Because the contract had not yet been awarded, mail carried per "Chusan" was treated as shipletters, despite the ship being a designated packet. It is believed that the '3' h/s was first used on mail per "Chusan"]$1,000†

[The 6d registration stamp was issued only in 1856] The early datestamps had the year as part of the inscription. Each December they were returned to the GPO to have the new year soldered-in. During the period the datestamp was out of commission, manuscript endorsements were used to indicate the office of despatch. As a group, these are scarce markings. NEW SOUTH WALES - International Reply Coupons These interesting ephemeral items allowed the recipient to exchange the coupon for postage stamps for the then current foreign letter rate. That was their only purpose. They could not be sent through the mail except under cover and so are not by any stretch of the imagination - and with all due respect to the FIP - "postal stationery". The fact the FIP allows such items in postal stationery exhibits speaks more to the persuasive powers of certain collectors than to the deliberative powers of the FIP. There is no doubting the scarcity of this material and, having "achieved" the status of postal stationery, the market value of IRCs has in recent times "gone through the roof".
