ith its rich heritage of vintage and modern aircraft, it’s no wonder that Snohomish County hosts three of the most popular annual aviation events in the Pacific

Northwest. Family-friendly. Festive. Fun. Spring and summer are filled with flight adventures for kids of all ages in Snohomish County. Paine Field Aviation Day

On an early morning in mid-May, I set off to explore the wonder of flight at Paine Field Aviation Day in Everett, WA. My quest began at the entrance to Paul Allen’s Flying Heritage Collection. Wow. What an inviting treasure trove of rare WWII warbirds! At first glance, it’s easy to see how aviation enthusiasts could get lost here for hours. Brilliantly restored to original flying condition, the iron birds on display gleam with promise and possibilities. Childhood memories of my brother’s airplane model collection wash over me as I marvel at seeing the original military aircraft in the flesh. Wandering through the exhibit, I pause in front of a P-51 Mustang before moving on to read about the Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk, the British Supermarine Spitfire, and Germany’s Messerschmitt models. Apart from the planes used for combat, visitors can learn about the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny, familiar for its use in daring aerobatic maneuvers and training for aviators, like Amelia Earhart and “Lucky Lindy,” Charles Lindbergh. My enjoyment of viewing the flying warbirds is surpassed only by the new-found respect I gained for the boundless bravery evident in history’s earliest aviators. As exciting as it was to browse the Flying Heritage Collection, it was time to discover the day’s aviation activities outside the hanger. Next up: a stop at the benefit pancake breakfast to fortify myself for the day ahead. Each year, firefighters host the breakfast to benefit an outstanding organization in need, such as the Northwest Burn Foundation or victims of the Oso landslide in rural Washington. Not only do visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a tasty breakfast in support of a worthy cause; attendees can also meet members of the local

community here and enjoy spirited conversations with other aviation aficionados. Meanwhile, several families have already registered for Young Eagles Flights, one of the event’s favorite activities - free flights for kids ages 8-17. With the chance to experience these thrilling sky rides in their own backyard, it’s not hard to imagine these same kids as future airplane aviators, first inspired by their exciting sky ride experience over the expansive landscape of Snohomish County. Despite an additional cost for the helicopter, biplane and T-6 rides, the chance to take in breathtaking views from the air proves irresistible to the many visitors lining up to register. While waiting for the opening ceremony and the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) Presentation of Colors, I stroll the grounds outdoors, stopping to admire one airplane wonder after another. From experimental aircraft, to brightly-colored biplanes like the 1937 Staggering Beech, to a 1954 Piper Tri-Chaser, the planes evoke an earlier era of limitless aviation adventures. Later, I have just enough time to peek inside a Pan American Airways System DC-3 for a quick view of the cockpit and interior design before the flying Cascade Warbirds Parade begins. Hearing the roar of revving airplane engines as the stationary models spring to life generates a wave of excitement through the gathering crowd and signals the start of the main spectator event. Collectively we hold our breath, “oo-ing” and “ah-ing,” with each takeoff and fly-bys before the planes return to the ground. Arlington Fly-In Snohomish County’s flying fun continues the second full weekend in July with the Arlington Fly-In at the Arlington Municipal Airport. In this three-day celebration of the joy of flight, visitors can experience everything from fly-bys and aerobatics to biplane and jeep rides to educational forums and hands-on workshops. Each evening visitors flock to the outdoor screen at Runway Theater, featuring aviation movie classics like Walt Disney’s Valiant, High Road to China and Gravity. Additional nighttime events include live music at the red barn, the Hot Air Balloon Night Glow and Night Air Show. Visit www.ArlingtonFlyIn.org for information about this year’s activities. Day one is devoted to kids’ activities that include the biplane rides, airshow and light sport aircraft fly-by. Though judging by the multi-generational families on site, it’s hard to distinguish between the kids and adults. Such is the enthusiasm everyone seems to share for the aviation events throughout the day. Even non-aviation enthusiasts walk away with greater appreciation and understanding of the industry after attending an educational forum. For example, are you curious to learn how Americans and Russians employed women pilots during the war? Want to know more about the role of the Tuskegee airmen? In the forums, aviators can discover basic information like how to get a pilot’s license to

more advanced scenarios like how to make the best decisions from limited information in real-world situations, including how to handle an engine failure in a single engine land airplane. If you have a passion for vintage military vehicles, the Arlington Fly-In has you covered. Not only can you get up close and personal to a Vietnam-era river patrol boat, you can also take a jeep ride, watch military tank demonstrations and view a military vehicle parade. On my visit, I had the chance to talk with Clarence Gilbert of the Civil Air Patrol, who shared some of the exciting naval history of Arlington Airport when WWII fighters flew off from this site. Having grown up in Snohomish County, Gilbert recalled his first flight here at age 13 when his dad took him to the airport without telling him where they were going. He served in the army for 8 years as aircraft crew chief with a military occupation specialty. Now a member of CAP, Gilbert gave me a comprehensive overview of the non-profit organization’s mission as an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. He describes his main role as teaching responsibility. Among the ways that CAP volunteers contribute to the community is through aviation search and rescue, disaster relief, homeland reconnaissance missions, communications, youth development and aerospace education. You needn’t be a pilot to volunteer with CAP. In fact, most volunteers don’t fly but rather serve the community in one of the less visible roles. As civilians, members wear uniforms and meet weekly for training and other activities. Kids between ages 12 to 19 are also encouraged to get involved as cadets with CAP to develop leadership skills. Vintage Aircraft Weekend Snohomish County caps off its thrilling summer aviation activities with a step back in time at Paine Field’s Vintage Aircraft Weekend typically held at the end or early September. The 2015 event will be September 4-6. Sponsored by the Historic Flight Foundation, “VAW” draws aviation enthusiasts eager to celebrate three decades of flight between Charles Lindbergh’s solo transatlantic crossing in 1927 and Boeing’s commercialized transatlantic jet service in 1957. The fun begins on Friday as airplanes arrive at Paine Field throughout the day and kicks into high gear with a live Big Band Dinner Dance that evening for up to 250 visitors. Dress in the stylish attire of the period, grab your partner and swing dance to the tunes of the times from artist greats like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and the Andrew Sisters. Don’t know how to swing dance? Not to worry. Guest professionals provide swing dance lessons to enhance everyone’s enjoyment of the evening event. Before you know it, you, too, will be swing dancing with the best of them to rhythmic musical melodies like “In the Mood” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” On Saturday and Sunday continue your throwback aviation weekend reverie with a tour of the vintage aircraft on display. h, summer! Here in Snohomish County, start with warm, sunny days. Frame with expansive snow-capped mountain ranges. Stir in sparkling, deep blue waters teeming with fish and wildlife. Spice with plenty of adventure and exploration. Mix together well and you have all the natural ingredients for hours of laid-back, leisure fun and play in the outdoors. Have a Whale of a Time at Sea Spring gets a head start in the beautiful Pacific Northwest where crocuses and daffodils can flower as early as February. But for many residents, Spring truly kicks off with the annual migration of whales through the San Juan Islands on their way to the Arctic. From early March to mid-May, visitors like myself sign up for gray whale-watching tours led by savvy captains and experienced naturalists. After all, it’s hard to imagine a more thrilling way to spend a day than spotting whales at play in their natural habitat. And that’s just for starters. Who knows what other wildlife we’ll encounter along the way?

Dressed in layers for comfort, our group of whale enthusiasts gather on shore a half hour before boarding. From our base in Everett, the sawing and sanding sounds of a working harbor echo our own buzzing excitement for the day ahead. A few of us are regulars, returning each year to follow the thirty to forty-ton wonders as they make their way around the south end of Whidbey Island and Saratoga Passage. Others are newbies, eager for their first gray whale sighting. Experienced whale-watchers or not, we all smile in anticipation, hoping for even a passing glimpse of these breathtaking beauties on our journey. Once aboard for our three-hour tour with Island Adventures, Captain Mike reviews the ship safety information. “Pay attention to the yellow markings for precaution.” “Always have one hand free to use the rail for balance.” “Keep feet on the deck, not the benchseat, at all times.” So confident is the crew that we will see whales that the company guarantees a viewing or we can ride again free for life until we do. With the odds of whale sightings in our favor, we head out, surrounded by wideopen views in every direction, enhanced by the ship’s large open-air upper deck and walk-around lower deck. Besides helping us get our bearings geographically in the Salish Sea, the ship naturalists give us a heads up of the wildlife besides whales that we’re likely to encounter. Captain Mike interrupts briefly: “This is about as beautiful as it gets around here . . . flat, calm waters . . .” The crew’s energy and excitement inspire our own as we hold our breath, keeping watch through binoculars and the naked eye.

Exhale! Woo hoo! We just had a first gray whale sighting, our attention drawn to a puffy blow rising about ten to fifteen feet high above the water surface. Naturalist Sarah helps us identify the type of whale by its dark, mottled-gray body, lack of a dorsal (top) fin with a dorsal hump instead and barnacled bumps down its back. What a thrill! Even without observing any dramatic whale behaviors like breaching or spy hopping, we’re hooked. Before our three-hour quest has finished, we also make friends with harbor porpoises, stellar sea lions, a harbor seal and a bald eagle perched in a towering Douglas fir along the shore. Go Fish! It’s a soft summer morning just before dawn when I meet up with my small group for our chartered fishing expedition. With a sunny forecast ahead, the day promises breathtaking views of the Olympic and Cascade Mountains as well as Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker. But whether that means we will catch any fish is anyone’s guess. Still, Captain Gary Krein seems confident, even for the less-experienced anglers among us. So we settle back, dip into the snacks we brought along for the ride and enjoy the stunning sunrise from the comfort of our covered boat. As I reach into my bag and offer to share my banana breakfast treat, Captain Gary expresses mock horror. “You brought a banana?” Uh-oh. Too late I recall the warning I had read on the All Star Charter’s website: bananas are considered bad luck on boats, dating back to the days when sailors stored them on board sailing ships. Because bananas ripened faster than other fruit, the bug larvae would infest the other fruit and the ship itself so they became synonymous with misfortune. Fortunately, my fellow passengers are good-natured about my oversight. But just in case, I quickly devour the one I brought with me and put the skin in a sealed bag, hoping to nip any chance of bad luck in the bud.

Once underway, Captain Gary describes our abundant fishing adventures in the Pacific Northwest. He explains that there are thirteen different geographic fishing zones in Washington State and every zone has a different season. Lingcod fishing season runs from May 1st through June 15th each year. Salmon fishing runs between January 1st - April 30th, July 1st - August 31st and again from September 1st - December 31st. My quick eating of the dreaded banana on board must have paid off because before long my fishing party manages to snag three chinook salmon. Whew! While many anglers opt to catch and release the fish they hook, you can keep up to the legal limit set by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife each season. For health reasons, most restaurants won’t cook your catch, but most fishing charters will clean and bag the fish you keep.

Take a Day Trip to Jetty Island Before hopping aboard the walk-on, passengers-only ferry, I ask the captain how long the ride will take to reach our final destination. “About ninety,” he starts, then pauses for dramatic effect, “seconds.” He flashes a wide-open grin. Gotcha. For all my years of living in the Seattle area, only recently had I heard about a slice of paradise named Jetty Island located mere minutes from downtown Everett, Washington. Created by the Army Corps of Engineers who needed a place to store sand sediment after dredging the Snohomish River, the twomile island attracts fifty thousand visitors annually. On a sunny Labor Day weekend, my husband and I headed off to explore this man-made wonder to find out for ourselves what makes this such a popular place for a family-friendly outing. We didn’t have high hopes that we would actually make it onto the island once we learned that reservations for the ferry are recommended a week in advance. But since this was our last chance before the end of the season, we decided to go for it. Lucky us! Within minutes of parking the car, we picked up our boarding passes for the 10AM ferry at the free-standing kiosk. On board, other passengers advised us to pick up return boarding passes for the short ride back as soon as we arrived on Jetty Island. Otherwise, we might not be able to return at the time we wanted. Wisely, we took their advice. Within a nanosecond of arrival, it was easy to understand the mass appeal of this treasured tiny island hideaway. Besides the breathtaking, expansive water and Mt. Baker views, the island is a natural wildlife sanctuary providing haven for migratory and ground-nesting birds along with foraging areas for eagles, osprey and peregrine falcons. Visitors can learn more about birds that frequent Jetty Island inside the Discovery Hut, an interactive child-friendly exhibit, or you can observe birds in their natural habitats on short hikes as well as join naturalists on guided nature walks. Several signs strategically placed on the island remind visitors how best to preserve the pristine environment. Visitors are

advised to “leave pets at home or on your boats, extinguish fires with water, stay on marked trails and take your trash with you.” With no lifeguards on duty, it’s also important to swim with care. For many, the main attraction here lies in the warm, shallow waters along miles of unpopulated sandy shoreline.
