Headmaster’s Message

I am delighted to introduce our school to you, as our football club returns to South America. Our previous tour in 2012 provided wonderful experiences for the boys, both on and off the pitch, and a new group of young men can now enjoy the same opportunity. New Zealand is geographically remote, and overseas tours are a major undertaking. Nevertheless our sports teams regularly travel to Australia and to the United Kingdom. The last football tour was the first to South America, but we could not wait to return. For most of those on the tour, their school career at Christ’s College has been woven around repairs and renovations in the city following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. In 2015 Christchurch is full of activity, as new buildings go up all around us. Our experience has confirmed how crucial maintaining a vibrant sporting life is to a region, and indeed to a school community; passion, energy, commitment, camaraderie and mutual respect all find their natural place in healthy sporting competition. Our boys are not here just to play football. They are here to learn about the places they visit, make new friends, and broaden their understanding of other countries and their traditions and cultures. I bring greetings from New Zealand to all involved in the tour matches - players, managers, coaches, parents and spectators. I know it will be a great success.

Simon Leese, Headmaster

Football at Christ’s College

Christ’s College, an Anglican school, was developed as part of the founding of Christchurch and Canterbury in 1850. Situated within Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens, the College’s black and white uniform is one of Christchurch’s most enduring images. The school has a roll of 620 boys, one third of whom are boarders.

Recent football highlights have included winning the Linwood Cup Tournament in 2010 and qualifying for the National Premier Tournament in 2014 where the team finished among the top 20 schools in the country. This tour also promises to be a most memorable highlight for College football.

After operating as a voluntary club for two years, Christ’s College entered its first football team in competition in 1975. Now, with eight teams in 2015, football is one of the major sports at Christ’s College.

This is the second development tour to South America for the football club, following a very successful tour in 2012.

For Christ’s College the football season begins in April playing against the other top schools in Christchurch. The annual fixtures against St Andrew’s College, Christchurch Boys High School and Shirley Boys High School are always tough encounters to get the season started. The 1st XI plays on Wednesday nights in the 1st XI Premier Competition, while the school has six other teams that play in the Mainland Football competition on Saturday mornings. In addition to the weekly competition, the 1st XI also participates in College’s traditional
