Solar Power Explained The Primary Components for Producing Solar Electricity are:

Solar Panels
Inverter
Battery
Charge Controller
Solar modules, or solar panels capture the sun’s energy and convert it to electricity. Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight strikes a PV cell, it transfers part of the sun’s energy to the electrons in the atoms of the cell. The new found energy allows some of those electrons to escape from their normal position. The electrons then travel along the metal contacts in the solar panels creating a DC current. This electricity is collected and used.
The inverter converts solar power into useable household electricity, which is the most common type used by everyday appliances and lighting. Providing efficient energy conversion on or off the electricity grid.
In a stand-alone system, batteries store the solar power generated and discharge the power as needed. The battery bank consists of one or more solar deep-cycle type batteries. The type of battery needed is specific to the type of application.
The charge controller or regulator prevents overcharge which results in out-gassing of the batteries as well as keeping electrical storage in the batteries from discharging to the solar modules at night. Charge controllers can also provide system monitoring.
Applications For Solar
On-Grid Power Systems
Off-Grid Power Systems
Industrial Power Systems
In an on-grid solar power system, the house receives electricity from both the PV array and the utility grid. Surplus electricity from the PV array is exported to the utility grid and ‘bought back' when the PV system is not generating.
In an off-grid solar power system, the house has no connection to the utility grid and often relies on a bank of batteries to store power for use at night and during periods of limited sun.
Industrial solar applications are virtually endless. Solar powered communication systems, rural payphones, satellite ground stations, radio transceivers, lighting in local suburban parks and even road signs and school crossing signs.

Sharp Module Range
Beginning with its founder’s vision, Sharp’s solar innovations is helping mankind face environmental challenges by making a positive change to create a safe, clean, and reliable sources of energy for now and generations to come. Since 1959, Sharp began its involvement in solar technology with research and development of photovoltaics. Since then, Sharp solar cells and peripheral products have been consistently improved and applied to a wide range of applications from satellites in outer space to terrestrial purposes for lighthouses, industrial applications, and residential use. Sharp has taken a giant step in its commitment for solar technology. A new Sakai plant in Japan is scheduled to come online in 2010. This plant will be capable of producing up to a gigawatt of thin-film solar panels annually. This is another commitment that Sharp has demonstrated for decades by contributing in the creation of a sustainable society for the future.

BP Solar Mounting Kits BP RM TL & TN Roof Mounting Structures The TL and TN range of roof mounting structures are designed to allow simple and neat attachment of solar modules to pitched roofs. Supplied as a kit, the system is made of corrosion resistant aluminium and stainless steel. It is modular, flexible and easy to install on either corrugated metal (TN) or tile (TL) roofs. The kit has been professionally engineered to meet all relevant Australian wind codes and is supplied complete with all hardware and fixings.
How it works The BP RM mounting system is a fixed angle structure, designed to attach a solar array in the same plane as an existing roof. It uses pairs of aluminium channel and specialised fixing components, which are designed to allow rapid and simple attachment of solar modules to most pitched roofs. Individual pairs can then be interconnected using the optional joiner kits providing great flexibility in the configuration of the array. The kit can be ordered with mounting brackets to suit tin or tile roofs. To enhance flexibility, the tin system attaches to roof battens, and the tile system attaches to rafters. Solar modules are attached using `top clamps’ avoiding the need to drill frames or access the underside for mounting. These also have the added feature of security fasteners to prevent easy removal of solar modules.
A Proven Design The BP RM mounting system has been specially engineered and tested to provide optimum cooling for the solar modules, whilst blending attractively and subtly with the roof. As a pre-engineered kit, you can rest assured that it is corrosion-resistant, designed to meet or exceed Australian wind codes and will save you time by providing everything you need in a modular and expandable kit. The system can be used in Australia for domestic and largescale commercial applications. Its simplicity and quick installation system have made it one of the most popular solar module roof mounting systems available.

On-Grid Inverters
SMA Inverter - Transformerless With the transformerless inverter range, SMA is setting new standards. By means of a completely new inverter topology, efficiency of over 98% is achieved for the first time, and optimsed manufacturing processes result in what is currently the lowest specific price. This enables phenomenal energy yields with low investment costs and thus a very short payback time for the entire system. Furthermore, three distinct power classes provide maximum flexibility when designing larger photovoltaic systems. The housing, suitable for use outdoors, enables installation in close proximity to the solar array, and thus simplifies the cabling on the DC side. The setup of smaller units also enables detailed monitoring of individual sections in a large systems.

SMA Sunny Backup Systems No light, no heating, no computer: today, it is very difficult to do anything without electricity. But how many solar power system operators really are aware that in the event of a power outage, the PV system is disconnected from the grid for reasons of safety? From that moment on, it ceases to provide solar power, neither for grid feeding, nor for the internal power supply. And this is all the more irritating, as the experts agree: throughout Australia, lengthy blackouts and temporary power outages are likely to increase. It is precisely this supply gap which we are closing with the Sunny Backup-System from SMA. As of now, this can be used by any PV system owner to power important loads in a reliable and environmentally friendly way, even in the event of grid failure. The Sunny Backup-System is a mixture of on-grid operation and off-grid technology which guarantees you a very high degree of user reliability, as well as easy installation. Power outages can have terrible financial consequences, especially for companies – unless you have extended the PV system with the Sunny Backup-System. And by the way: all existing systems with Sunny Boy inverters can be retrofitted without problems.
