St. Thecla Parish Mission Statement - St. Thecla is a multi-cultural parish located on the northwest side of Chicago. The parish welcomes, respects, and embraces all members of the community. May 29, 2011 6th Sunday of Easter TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - The people of Samaria accepted the word of God preached by Philip; they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:5-8, 14-17). Psalm - Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). Second Reading - Act with gentleness and reverence toward all, so that when you are maligned those who defame you will be the ones put to shame (1 Peter 3:15-18) or 1 Peter 4:13-16. Gospel - I will not leave you orphans, but will come to you (John 14:15-21) or John 17:1-11a.

"... and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured. There was great joy in that city." - Acts 8:7-8 It's easy to rejoice in the gifts that God gives when they are as outstanding as a lame man walking or a sick man cured. However, do we take time to thank God for the many miracles He gives us everyday – good health, family, friends, education, employment, housing? Being grateful is the secret to being joyful.

Thank you for your generosity to help meet our weekly financial goals.

Weekly Parish Information Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. In our Archdiocese many cemeteries will provide a Mass, more information can be found below as well as on page 8 of our bulletin.

THANK YOU Mr. Rick Rodriguez, a member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. Ryan Council, for donating the electric vigil light candles to our new shrine. Our parishioners now have the opportunity to light a candle as they pray for a person or particular situation. In recent times electric lights are used for safety reasons. In the above photo Mr. Rodriquez is pictured with Fr. Gene. The Pastoral Council is reviewing the feedback regarding the Mass schedule. The Chicago Police Department issued the letter printed below. We all have to work together during these times. Dear Fellow 16th District Residents, This past weekend finally brought us good weather. It also brought numerous disturbances with teens at our neighborhood parks and school playgrounds. Most of these calls and on view disturbances were very minor in nature. One new phenomenon is the unusually large number of teens that gather at one time. Texting allows our teens to instantaneously announce the new location to hang out, and what follows are large number of teens gathering. This in turn causes alarm to the residents who live near these parks and playgrounds. Responding officers have found some alcohol near the locations where the teens are gathering, and some of the calls for service suggest that alcohol may be involved. Three calls over the weekend were particularly disturbing; all were near St. Thecla Church and School at 6323 N. Newcastle. One call was of teenagers urinating against the church wall, and there were two incidents of the newspaper recycling bins being set afire. Also, some neighbors are directly confronting the unruly teens. To avoid future incidents the 16th District will be patrolling the problematic locations, and will be taking enforcement action. If you are the parent, friend, or neighbor of a teen please remind them of respecting the peace of our community, the dangers of alcohol and their responsibility of being good citizens. We encourage our teenage citizens to continue to visit our neighborhood parks and school playgrounds; we ask them to act in a responsible and respectful manner.

The Roman Missal Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: In the weeks to come, your parish bulletin will carry explanations of the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, along with some instructions on how we are to celebrate these sacraments as God’s Holy People in the Archdiocese of Chicago. I always enjoy worshiping God with you when I celebrate Mass in the parishes and institutions of the Archdiocese, and I hope now for a moment of renewal in our worship. As you know, the sacraments are acts of faith. We believe that the risen Christ acts through the sacraments. He gives us grace, which brings us into his own life here and in the life to come. The sacraments are acts of the Church. The Church knows what Christ gives her the power to do, and it is the Church that puts order into the celebration of the sacraments. The Church, in the words of Vatican II, is a “hierarchical communion” gathered around Christ, our mediator with the Father. That reality shapes our worship. The royal priesthood of the baptized is made active in the Mass by the ministry of ordained priests, so that the Eucharist is the action of the whole Christ, made visible in head and members in his body, the Church. The sacraments are rites. When the national anthem is played, everyone rises. That is a secular rite. The sacraments are rites of the faith community; they require common responses and actions. It is easier to respond since the liturgy was put into the vernacular, and most people do so with good voice. Likewise most people act together, for example, making the Sign of the Cross at the beginning of the Mass. We worship as a body, with various members taking different roles and functions, in an integrated pattern. Normally, we sit to listen, we stand out of respect, and we kneel to adore. The Catholics of the Archdiocese of Chicago worship using the Roman rite, and the Roman Missal has recently been slightly revised. This revision necessitates a few changes in the way we worship together. These changes will be explained in the fall and will come into effect on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. This revision does not affect celebrations of the Eucharist that use the Roman rite as it was done before the revisions called for by the Second Vatican Council. It also does not affect the worship of Catholics in Cook and Lake counties who belong to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church or to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church or to the Maronite or other Eastern Catholic Churches, for these communities worship according to their own rites. The explanations and instructions to follow are like a collective examination of conscience about the state of our worship. Our participation in worship should be deliberate or conscious, active, and fruitful. Sometimes we participate by acting and speaking, sometimes by silence and recollection. Participation is always conditioned by an interior disposition of faith, hope, and charity. The charity that brings us to the Eucharist also brings us from the Eucharist into a world in need of love. Because we are one with Christ, it is his love that we are to bring to others. In the Archdiocese, we are talking more and more about sharing Christ’s spiritual gifts, that is, evangelizing. The Eucharist both gives us the zeal to introduce others to Christ and is itself the greatest gift we are to share, for it is Christ himself. The Mass is the means by which God makes holy the world; it is the worship that the human race offers to the Father, adoring him through Christ in the Holy Spirit. It is the most important thing we do, the only thing we will do for all eternity. Thank you for all your efforts to do it well. Catholics Come Home Christ our Light!

6th Sunday of Easter – May 29, 2011

Not too long ago a gentleman spoke at the end of the funeral liturgy for his dad. This was not a eulogy, but a faith witness about his Dad. His Dad’s favorite and most challenging quote from the Scriptures was: May your will be done. The gentleman began to tear. After the cemetery service, I asked him about his tears. He said to me, “at that moment I heard the prayer as my own prayer, as my challenge and my desire to do His will, to accept His will.” These series of articles are about encountering the Risen Christ: in connections, in holy people, in the poor, in prayer, in worship, and today’s article in His Word. What is your favorite quote or parable from the Scriptures? We listen to our favorite music and watch our favorite movies a few times. How important to allow ourselves to be attracted to the Scripture which challenges and consoles us! Here are a few of mine. Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10) The quote hangs over my desk. Often enough I look for inspiration in that quote. As Jesus said to one of his friends: you are anxious about many things. Stillness both slows me down and opens me up. You are precious in my eyes; I love you. (Isaiah 43:4a) Often enough I tried to help our kindergarten children memorize this. If this scripture came to mind a few times a day, our world view would empower us to be his instruments in the world. O Lord, you have searched me and know me. You know when I sit and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. (Psalm 139:1-2) Again, when reminded that I am within God’s knowing first. I feed on His knowing of me and become His presence. Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. (John 14:1) As Jesus begins his Last Supper discourse, his farewell to his dearest friends, he knows their troubled hearts. I am most grateful to hear the encouragement not to allow my heart to be troubled. On the night he was betrayed he took bread and gave you thanks. (Matthew 26:26) I am amazed always at his juxtaposition of reality: betrayal and thanks. The Eucharist narrows even betrayal from the dearest family members. The truth will set you free. CARDINAL GEORGE ORDAINED TEN MEN FOR ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Ceremony was Held at Holy Name Cathedral on Saturday, May 21 Chicago, IL (May 19, 2011) – Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, ordained ten new priests at 10 a.m., on Saturday, May 21, at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior streets in Chicago. The men, ranging in age from 25 to 34, include three from the U.S., three from Mexico and two from Tanzania. Two others are from Kenya and Poland. In ceremonies held earlier this month at the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary, these seminary graduates received a Master of Divinity degree. After ordination the new priests will serve in parishes in Chicago, Berwyn, Evanston, Glenview, Palatine, Western Springs, and Winnetka. ORDINANDS Hernan Cuevas, 29, from Michoacan, Mexico, will have his first assignment at St. Athanasius Parish, 1611 Lincoln Street in Evanston. Elliott Richard Dees, 25, was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, and is assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, 1775 Grove Street in Glenview. Orlando Flores, 28, from Mexico, will have his first assignment at St. Mary of Celle Parish, 1428 Wesley Avenue in Berwyn. The Pastoral Guidelines for Marriage Preparation for the Archdiocese of Chicago ask that a minimum of 4 months be set aside for personal preparation for marriage. Couples should refrain from setting a firm date or making any other arrangements until after they have met with a parish priest or deacon to discuss marriage plans.

St. Thecla Church has several ministers of care who can regularly take communion to those in need. Please call the Parish Office to arrange for communion for yourself or a homebound loved one.

St. Thecla School News News from Second Grade This year has gone by so quickly. It seems as though we were just starting the year anticipating the great things that were going to happen this year and here we are experiencing them. April and May were the culmination of a lot of work. We made our First Reconciliation in April and our First Communion May 7th. We also had a special role to play in the crowning of Mary. How lucky we are to go to St. Thecla, where we learn great things academically and truly grow spiritually. We told you – “Second Grade is the place to be!”
