PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: A.

Performance Requirements: Comply with loading capacity required by Code applicable in the jurisdiction of the Project.

B.

Structural Performance of Top Rails and Supports: 1. Capable of withstanding a concentrated load of 200 pounds (90.6 kg), applied to top rail at any point and in any direction. 2. Capable of withstanding a uniform load of 50 pounds per linear foot (74.3 kg/m) applied to the top rail horizontally with a simultaneous load of 100 pounds per linear foot (148.6 kg/m) applied vertically downward. 05521 - 1

Design need not provide for both concentrated and uniform loads to be applied concurrently.

Structural Performance of Guardrail Infill: 1. Capable of withstanding a horizontal concentrated load of 200 pounds (90.6 kg), applied to a 1-foot (30.5 mm) square area at any point on infill. 2. Infill is defined to include panels, intermediate rails, balusters, and other elements. 3. Design need not provide for infill loads to be applied concurrently with top rail loads.

Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

Product Data: Manufacturer's Product Data substantiating compliance with Contract Documents. Include manufacturer's installation instructions.

Shop Drawings: Submit Shop Drawings for railings and handrails. 1. Include plans, elevations, and details. 2. Show connection and accessory items and locations for anchor and bolt installation. 3. Include design loads, structural calculations, and material properties. 4. Provide Shop Drawings signed and sealed by structural engineer licensed in the state in which Project is located.

Railing Selection Sample: 12 inches (254 mm) long sample representing manufacturer's full range of available color, finish, sheen, and concealed connection detail.

Railing Verification Sample: 12 inches (254 mm) long sample illustrating color, finish, sheen, and concealed connection detail.

F.

Supply installation templates, required reinforcing, and recessed anchorage devices in timely fashion to installers of related work that will receive products of this section.

QUALITY ASSURANCE A.

Manufacturer's Qualifications: Firm that has produced types of stair and railing systems required for not less then 10 years, with not less than 5 similar projects that have been successful use for not less than 5 years.

B.

Installer Qualifications: Minimum 2 years experience in successful installation of stair and railing systems of type specified or trained by manufacturer.

C.

Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship. 1. Finish areas designated by Architect. 2. Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect. 3. Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

PROJECT CONDITIONS A.

Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

B.

Field Measurements: Where handrails are indicated to fit other construction, check actual dimensions of other construction by actual field measurements before fabrication. Indicate 05521 - 2

recorded measurements on approved Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delay of Work. 1.8

MATERIALS A.

Manufacturer warrants to the original owner for the period of ten years, prorated, from the date of railing shipment, subject to the limitations and conditions listed below, to be free of defects in workmanship that, in the course of normal and proper use, result in warping and splitting. 1. Materials Warranty: Manufacturer shall, at its option, repair, replace (excluding the cost of shipping or labor charges or other expenses of any kind associated with the installation or removal of the original or replacement product) or refund the original purchase price of the railing component(s) found defective by manufacturer as follows: 100 percent in year 1, 70 percent in year 2 thru 4, 40 percent in year 5 thru 7, and 10 percent in year 8 thru 10. Manufacturer shall not have any warranty obligations after the end of the 10th year from the date of purchase. 2. Manufacturer Finish Warranty: Powder coating system shall be warranted for a period of one-year from the date of installation, but not to exceed eighteen months from date of manufacture. Manufacturer shall repair and or replace at manufacturer’s discretion any or all of our work that is determined to be defective in its workmanship. Ordinary operational adjustments, normal wear and tear, or physical abuse, are not covered under this agreement. 3. Paint Manufacturer’s Extended Pass-Through Warranties: Manufacturer shall provide warranty documentation for Owner to assert claim under the terms of warranty provided by the powder coat manufacturer for finish defects. a. Length of Warranty: 5 years.

Railing Members: Extrusions fabricated from 6063- T5 or T6 or 6061-T6 aluminum.

Balcony Separators: Manufacturer's aluminum fasteners designed to hold separation panels between 1/4 inch (6 mm) and 5/16 inch (8 mm) thick.

Grout: Non-shrink Portland cement-based hydraulic grout, mixed and applied per manufacturer's instructions; no gypsum grout allowed.

FABRICATION: A.

General: Fabricate handrails and railing systems to comply with requirements indicated for design, dimensions, details, finish, and member sizes, post spacing, and anchorage, but not less than those required to support structural loads.

B.

Connections: Railing manufacturer's standard concealed mechanical fasteners and fittings, providing flush, smooth, rigid, hairline joints and that can be removed and reconnected after original installation.

C.

Exposed Ends of Hollow Members: Closed with prefabricated end fittings.

D.

Posts: Solid extruded or cast aluminum or tubing as determined by type and style chosen.

E.

Brackets, Flanges, and Anchors: Provide manufacturer's standard brackets, flanges, and anchors for interconnection of handrail and railing members to other construction.

F.

Inserts: Provide inserts and other anchorage devices during installation for connecting handrails and railing systems to concrete or masonry Work. Fabricate anchorage devices capable of withstanding loading imposed by handrail and railing systems. Coordinate anchorage devices with supporting structure.

EXAMINATION A.

Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B.

Verify that reinforcement and anchoring devices are the correct type, have been located correctly, and have been installed properly.

C.

If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

PREPARATION A.

EXECUTION

Coordinate drawings, diagrams, templates, instruction, and directions for installation of anchors, such as sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and miscellaneous items having integral anchors that are to be embedded in concrete as masonry construction. 1. Manufacturer shall supply all integral hardware for connection of handrail and railing to each other. 2. Provide hardware needed to connect handrail or railing to adjoining structures. Coordinate delivery of such items to Project site.

INSTALLATION GENERAL A.

Fit sections accurately together.

B.

Set handrails and railings accurately in location, alignment, and elevation, measured from established lines and levels and free from rack. Do not cut or abrade surfaces of handrails and railing components.

Install handrails and railings systems to comply with railing manufacturer's instructions. 05521 - 5

Fastening to In-Place Construction: Provide anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing handrails and railings to existing construction.

INSTALLATION - POSTS A.

Adjust handrails and railing systems prior to anchoring to ensure matching alignment. Space posts at intervals indicated but not greater than that required by design loading.

B.

Anchor posts in concrete by core drilling holes not less than 4 inches (102 mm) deep and 1 inch (25 mm) greater that outside diameter of post. Clean holes of loose material; insert posts, and fill annular space between post and concrete with non-shrink, non-metallic grout, mixed and poured to comply with anchoring material manufacturer's directions.

C.

Anchor posts onto mounting surface by means of railing manufacturer's recommended method, including surface mount flange mount, fascia mount by means of clamp, fascia mount by means of a side mount bracket, or other means of anchorage as determined by railing manufacturer.

CLEANING A.

Remove manufacturer's protective covering from exposed surfaces not more than 24 hours before final inspection.

B.

Clean surfaces as required, following procedures and employing cleaning materials as recommended by accessories manufacturer.

PROTECTION A.

Protect installed products from damage by subsequent construction activities, until completion of Project.

B.

Field repair of damaged product finishes is limited to painted color touch up only. If structural damage to railing member has occurred replace products that have been damaged by subsequent construction activities. END OF SECTION
