My parents joined the lodge in Chicago as they were preparing to travel to Norway for their first trip in 1970. It provided the knowledge and travel expertise that they needed. Phyllis and I joined Desert Fjord five years ago as we prepared to make our first trip to Norway in 2010. We have been sincerely pleased with the friends we have met and the in depth understanding of Norway then and now. Just hearing Jan Loomis say that they had taken the same Brekke tour in 2009 that we were considering was an important step of our decision making process. As we begin a new year at Desert Fjord, I want the lodge to continue to live by this Mission statement. I want us to learn more about Norway, its heritage and culture. The cooperative events that we participate in each year celebrate our Nordic interests. "He possessed the physical endurance to ski fifty miles in a day and the psychological self-reliance to embark on long trips, with a minimum of gear and only his dog for company." - Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930). Tall, supple, strong . . . not massively built, Fridtjof Nansen's yearning for adventure, and even his talent for drawing in a series of brilliant achievements brought him internal fame. This is the person who made a scientific, exploratory foray into the Arctic based upon his revolutionary theory that a current carried polar ice from east to west. This is the person who designed the immensely strong and cunning ship, the Fram (Forward.) Nansen then sailed the Fram into the ice pack of Siberia, September 22, 1893 - but when the ship emerged thirty-five months later, on August 12, 1896, into open water near Spitzbergen - Nansen was not aboard. With one companion, thirty-days rations for twenty-eight dogs, with three sledges, two kayaks ... and a hundred day's rations for themselves ... Nansen had left the ship in March 1895. They made a 400mile dash to the North Pole and in twenty-three days made it closer to the Pole than anyone had previously been. Turning back, they wintered 1895-1896 at Franz Josef Land before starting south again in May, reuniting with the Fram the same day the ship reached open water at Tromsø, August 21st. Fridtjof Nansen's gift of The Fram to Roald Amundsen made it possible for Amundsen to reach the South Pole years later. The 'history of The Fram’ is in itself most remarkable. Fridtjof Nansen’s achievements include humanitarian works for the League of Nations. He was the first person to cross Greenland, whose interior had never been explored . . . crossing on skis after burning the boats behind his party to assure going - forward.

Although we have leads on some possible new members, none are as yet confirmed. Since a goal of our Lodge for 2013 is to increase membership by at least 5% you are urged to reach out to friends, relatives and other contacts and invite them to join with us. Maybe our experimental shift to the Sunday afternoon meeting time will be a good talking point. Sadly I must report the passing of a long time member, Jeanne O. Olson, last December. Jeanne would have been 79 years old this Valentine’s Day. Jeanne lived alone in Cave Creek. A REMINDER: As reported here last month, SofN International dues will increase $1 for members and their spouses, $.50 for Unger Venner members who pay dues and for Golden Members. New rates took effect as of January 1, 2013 for renewals and new member-ships. Once again you are reminded that our Membership Retention Fund (MRF) can assist members having difficulty in meeting their SofN dues renewals. All such requests or referrals are strictly private and anonymous as are the names of those who volunteer the funds that support the MRF. Arctic ship "Maud" travels back to Norway The process has started to raise the arctic ship Maud out from the water and get her safely transported back to Norway from Canada. Explorer Roald Amundsen's polar ship Maud has been at the bottom of Cambridge Bay in Canada since 1930. Now the work has begun to get her out of the water, and on her way back to Norway. The ship might arrive back home next summer, informs Jan Wangaard, who is the project leader for the ship's transfer. A film crew has accompanied Wangaard on his trip to Canada. They plan to take pictures and make a movie based on the process of bringing the ship safely back to Asker outside of Oslo, where the boat will be preserved and placed in a museum.

Cod is sometimes known as clipfish (klipfish) or stockfish. Cod has been an important economic commodity in international markets since the Viking period (around 800 AD). Norwegians traveled with dried cod and soon a dried cod market developed in southern Europe. This market has lasted for more than 1,000 years, enduring the Black Death, wars and other crises, and is still an important Norwegian fish trade. If you take a trip on the Hurtigruten you will see it drying on fish racks in the Lofoten Islands and your ship may even pick up some to take south to Bergen. Since the introduction of salt, dried and salted cod (clipfish or 'klippfisk' in Norwegian) has also been exported. By the end of the 14th century, the Hanseatic League dominated trade operations and sea transport, with Bergen as the most important port. The Portuguese began fishing cod in the 15th century. The Basques played an important role in the cod trade, and allegedly found the Canadian fishing banks before Columbus' discovery of America. The North American east coast developed in part due to the vast cod stocks. Many cities in the New England area are located near cod fishing grounds. The fish was so important to the history and development of Massachusetts, the state's House of Representatives hung a wood carving of a codfish, known as the Sacred Cod of Massachusetts, in its chambers.

Wangaard says that he feels confident that the ship can handle the transfer from Canada to Norway. The low temperature in the water may have actually helped preserve the ship, he explains.

Apart from the long history, cod differ from most fish because the fishing grounds are far from population centers. The large cod fisheries along the coast of North Norway (and in particular close to the Lofoten islands) have been developed almost uniquely for export, depending on sea transport of stockfish over large distances.

Amundsen originally had the ship built in 1917, but in 1925 it was sold to the Hudson's Bay company when Amundsen declared bankruptcy. Five years later it sank, and has been lying at the bottom of Cambridge Bay for more than 80 years.

Cod was described as "British gold" and that it was folly to restore Canadian fishing rights to France. In the 20th century Iceland reemerged as a cod fishing power

Asker municipality bought the ship in 1990, but never started the process of moving the ship back to Asker. Real estate company Tandberg Eindom took over the ship in 2011, but was met with some resistance from the local population in Canada, who wanted the ship to stay in Cambridge Bay. Finally, in March, a Canadian appeals committee decided that the ship can be transferred out of the country.

Desert Fjord Accounts Summary report distributed; checking balance $7,795. One outstanding check to Scottsdale Masonic Lodge from April 2012; Astrid will cancel the check and re-issue a new one. There was a fraudulent expense on the checking account; Astrid worked with the bank to reverse the expense. Summary report shows a deficit of $798 (income vs. expenses); we will try to conserve funds as much as possible in 2013. b. The Auditors (Floyd Downs, Sherrie Loomis and Tyler Soine) will complete the audit of the books by end of January. c. Thank you Astrid for keeping our accounts in such great shape. Job well done! d. The Scandinavian dances are complexly choreographed and full of fun, humor and gymnastics and the live music brings joy to all who listen. The dances chosen are at the discretion of the Director. Prior to each dance, the audience will hear a description of the dance, learn what country it comes from and any other interesting bits of information about it.

Sons of Norway Scholarships There are a number of scholarships available from Desert Fjord Lodge, District #6 and the International office of Sons of Norway. Desert Fjord’s Oslo University International Summer School $1,000 scholarship application deadline is March 1, 2012. The Camp Norge educational stipends application of $375 is due May 1, 2012. The District #6 (which includes Desert Fjord Lodge) awards up to 3 scholarships each year. Their deadline is April 1, 2012. Applications for these various scholarships are available on their respective websites.

PLEASE BRING CANNED OR DRY FOOD TO THE FEBRUARY MEETING to be donated to Vista Del Camino Food The following recipe is how I usually make Hasselback potatoes. I Bank, Scottsdale. Apple Cake like them better this way. Medium size russet potatoes Olive oil or butter Peel potatoes. Using a large serving spoon to place potato on or chopsticks on either side of the potato, slice potato into ¼ inch or less slices without going all the way through to bottom. Toss potatoes in melted butter or in olive oil. Bake in a 450 degree oven for about 1 hour, tossing potatoes several times as they brown. About ten minutes or so before you take them out, sprinkle some shredded Parmesan or cheddar cheese on top. You can leave them plain or sprinkle with herbs to serve. Also good with a dollop of sour cream.

4 tbsp. butter ½ cup brown sugar 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces Krusteaz Cinnamon Crumb Muffin Mix Melt butter and brown sugar together. Add apples and cook for a minute or two until apples soften a little. Let apples cool for a few minutes in a bowl. Make Crumb Muffin Mix as directed on pkg. Spoon ¾ batter in prepared pan. Sprinkle ½ cup crumb mixture over top. Add rest of batter in dollops. Don’t worry about not covering the crumb mixture. Spoon apples over top, distributing evenly. Don’t spoon the liquid that has drained from the apples. Top with rest of crumb mixture and bake as directed on pkg.

Lemon and Dill Sauce for Salmon 1 pkg Knorrs Hollandaise Sauce ½ to ¾ cup cream ½ to ¾ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice Fresh dill Make Hollandaise sauce as directed on pkg. Add ½ cup cream and ½ cup lemon juice. Add additional cream and/or lemon juice to make sauce the consistency you want. Add dill to taste. Makes about 2 cups.

The dancers are Jenny and Ted Rudberg, Marge and John Voth, Per Aannestad, Bente Tingulstad, Bill Bultinck, Jana Peterson, Alice Fuchs, Laurie and Earl Fuchs. We practice twice a month, and always looking for new members. Jenny, Ted, and Jana are members of Desert Fjord.
