BOOT CAMP AND WINDOWS ON MAC This document shows you how to set up Boot Camp and install Microsoft Windows on an Intel-based Mac computer Introduction Boot Camp lets you install Windows on a Mac computer, using a Microsoft Windows installation disc that you provide. Windows is installed on its own partition. After installation, you can use either Windows or Mac OS X on your Mac computer. The Boot Camp Assistant will help you create the Windows partition and restart your Mac using your Windows installation disc. Then you follow these instructions to install Windows and install software drivers that let Windows work with your Mac hardware.

NOTICE: Make sure to back up all of your data before using Boot Camp, and regularly back up data while using the software.

What You Need 

An Intel-based Mac computer with Mac OS X 10.6 or later



Mac OS X install disk (The disk that came with your MAC)



At least 30GB free space



A Microsoft Windows 7 disk

Steps Involved 1. Download Windows 7 Professional from MSDN AA and Burn on a DVD 2. Use Boot Camp Setup Assistant to Partition your hard drive and Continue with Windows 7 installation 3. After completing the Windows 7 installation, install the Apple Boot Camp Windows drivers from your Mac OS X v10.6 (or later) Install DVD. 4. I. How to Get Windows 7 Important: Please check this link to identify what version of Windows is supported by your MAC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1846 A. Download the ISO file 1) To Download the Windows 7 ISO file, Click on the following link:

2) Enter your School of Engineering Username and Password 3) Download the ISO file and Save it on your Desktop

B. Burn ISO in Mac OS X 1) Start Disk Utility from /Applications/Utilities 2) From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image

3) Select the Windows 7 ISO you downloaded in previous step

4) Insert a Blank DVD and Click the Burn button

C. Get the Serial Number for Windows 7 1) To get the Serial number for Windows 7, Go to, https://msdn01.e-academy.com/elms/Security/Login.aspx?campus=uconnect_cmbe 2) Login with your Engineering Username and Password

3) This should bring you to the Software portal page

4) Click on the appropriate OS, Windows 7 Prof x64 (64Bit) (or) Windows 7 Prof x86 (32Bit) 5) Check the Download box and Click ADD TO CART

6) Note down the Serial number

7) Logout from MSDN AA

II. Boot Camp Assistant 1) Open a new Finder window by clicking the Finder icon in your dock

2) Click Applications from the list of places on the left

3) Double click the Utilities folder to access your utility applications

4) Double click the Boot Camp icon to launch the application

5) The Boot Camp Assistant will open. Click the Continue button

6) You will now be asked to Create a Partition for Windows. You can drag the divider to set the size of the partitions. Windows 7 needs about 20 GB at very minimum. If you plan to install applications make sure you allow extra space for them. Click the Partition button. Recommended size - Use 32 GB

Boot Camp will now partition your hard disk...

7) Once your disk has been partitioned you are ready to start the Windows installation. Insert your Windows 7 Installation DVD and click the Start Installation button

8) Your computer will now reboot and launch the Windows 7 Setup. Select your language, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method from the dropdown boxes, then click the Next button

10) Please read the license terms then check the box to accept the license terms. Click the Next button to continue

11) Click to select the Custom (advanced) method of installation

12) Click to select the Disk Partition labeled BOOTCAMP then click the Drive options (advanced) link below

13) Making sure the BOOTCAMP partition is highlighted click the Format link.

14) A popup window will appear warning you that any data stored on the partition will be lost. Click the OK button

15) Once the drive has finished formatting you can click the Next button to continue

16) Windows 7 will now begin copying and expanding files. This may take some time. After all the files have been copied and expanded your computer will reboot

17) Your computer will then be restarted again.

18) You will then be asked to choose a username for your account and name your computer. Please do this and then click the Next button to continue

19) You will then be asked to set a password to use when you log on to your computer. Type in your desired password, retype it to confirm, and enter a hint to be used if you forget the password. Click the Next button to continue

20) Windows 7 Setup will now ask for your product key. Input the key(From Step – I.C.6) then click the Next button to continue

21) Windows will now ask you to select your preference in regards to its updates, security, and online assistance. Select Install Important Updates Only

22) The next steps will involve Setting up time, Wireless network and then Windows 7 Desktop will start

III. Boot Camp Drivers Installation 1) Insert your Mac OS X Installation DVD and run the setup.exe file

2) The Boot Camp Installer will appear to guide you through the steps necessary to install Boot Camp. Click the Next button to get started

3) Read the license agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click the Next button to continue

4) Check the box Apple Software Update for Windows then click the Install button

5) Boot Camp will proceed to install the drivers necessary for your Mac to work properly with Windows

6) When the installation has completed click the Finish button

7) You will then be prompted to restart your system for the configuration changes to take effect. Click the Yes button

8) Once your system has restarted you will have successfully installed Windows 7 on your Mac using Boot Camp. Notice that now your screen resolution will have improved and you should have all your drivers working properly.
