The Huddle • How we conduct and break the huddle sets the tone for how we will play once the ball is snapped…it must be disciplined, focused, and unified! • The Center sets the location of the huddle, 5 yards from the L.O.S., and calls out down and distance. • Sprint to it and out of it! Create TEMPO! • All linemen have their hands on their knees with eyes up. Backs have hand at their sides. • Once the quarterback enters the huddle, he assumes COMPLETE control of the business meeting. NO ONE else talks! • When sent in with information, get it to the QB. DO NOT leave the sidelines unless you understand the information given! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Center sets the huddle and calls down & distance Substitutions from sidelines call out player being subbed for. QB will enter huddle and say “check” – all talking stops, the QB now owns the huddle. QB will call play and snap count If anyone is unclear on the play or count, say “check” and QB will repeat QB prepares huddle to break by saying “Ready” All eleven players break the huddle with “Break” and a clap and sprint to the L.O.S.
“KNOW YOUR RULE – DO YOUR JOB” •The most important part of a football play happens BETWEEN the huddle and the line of scrimmage…how you prepare yourself during this time will determine the success of the play! •Have a simple mental routine that allows you to do your thinking before the play so that you can be prepared, confident, and aggressive once the play begins, and be ready for anything that might happen! •The actual routine varies by position, but its basic elements are: –WHAT IS MY RULE (or basic assignment) on this play? –What, if anything, should I do with my ALIGNMENT to help me do this job? –What is the DEFENDER’S basic alignment? –Based on the defense I see, what will my FIRST 2-3 STEPS off the ball be? --What ADJUSTMENTS might I have to make, based on the defense, to get my job done

Cadence •The Qb will use the cadence: “Down” – “ Go” – “Set Go” •The Qb can put the ball into play in one of 4 ways: –On SOUND: The ball is snapped on “DOWN” –On ONE: The ball is snapped on the first “GO” –On TWO: The ball is snapped on the second “GO” •Examples: –On One: Down - GO –On Short: Down – Go – Set GO Special Calls “JUNO” : Named after Juneau, Alaska, this is a “Freeze” call used to draw the defense offsides and to check defensive alignment. – NO PLAYER MOVES IF “JUNO” IS CALLED!!! –Center and QB must be aware: •If a defender jumps into neutral zone SNAP THE BALL (QB SNEAK)!!! •If no defenders move, call a timeout “CLOCK” : A lightening call means we are going to stop the clock. All players should sprint to the L.O.S. Cadence is on ONE = “Down – Go” “THUNDER” : Thunder means we are going to run the same exact play without huddling. The QB will yell: • “Thunder ONE, Thunder ONE” = Same play on ONE (“Down – Go”)
Pistol Wing-T • The PISTOL is a formation not an offense. Any offense can be run from the PISTOL set. • It is, simply put, a Short Shotgun set. • We will run all of the same Wing-T Plays with the same blocking rules. • Backfield steps will change slightly, but the concepts of each play remain unchanged! • The PISTOL set in our terminology will be designated by “SOUTH” = Fullback aligns South of QB.

Formations • In our system, formations are usually called with a Right or Left designation. • This Right or Left call usually indicates which side of the formation the TE (Y) and the Wingback will align. • However, each position has one of more TAGS that will change that player’s alignment. • Each player is responsible for knowing the BASE formations in addition to position specific TAGS. Shifting •There are several ways to incorporate shifting and movement into our offensive sets: 1. TE Shifting 2. Formation Shifting 3. Motion 4. Combinations of 1-3 TE (Y) Shifts:
Formation Shifts: • There will be times when we will align in one formation and move/shift all eligibles. • We can use shifts and motions to change the strength of the formation, outflank the defense, create mismatches and identify coverages. • Important Points about Shifting & Motion: 1. All players must be set for 1 sec. before a player can go in motion 2. Only one player can go in motion 3. A player in motion cannot be moving toward the LOS when the ball is snapped

Glossary of Terms Blocking Terminology Gap Block – Used to block player aligned in inside gap. Down Block – Used to block player aligned on man inside. On Block – used to block player aligned head up. Fire Block – Used to block player aligned ½ man outside. Reach Block – Used to block player aligned one man outside. Alpha Block – double team zone block between C and PSG (A Gap). Bravo Block -- Double team zone block between PSG & PST(B Gap). Charlie Block – Double team zone block between PST & TE(C Gap). Delta Block – Double team zone block between TE & WB (D Gap). Zulu Block – Zone block used on the backside of a play. Florida Block – Fold block between C & BSG Omaha – Man Blocking call (used on Belly). Texas – Cross block call (used on Belly). Denver – Down block call used on belly vs. A&B gap defenders. Ohio – Out blocking call (used on belly ). Log Block – block by pulling lineman trying to pin/hook defender inside.
