My all-time favourite place to run is Bouddi National Park. I have so many spectacular and beautiful photos of this place it was very hard to choose from them all. Bouddi is very special to me. I feel it's my spiritual home. I have spent countless hours doing some very hard training there and also spent a lot of time there when I have been injured and unable to run. I love sharing this place and I have taken many people into Bouddi for training runs to shown them all the places that are special to me so they toowww.terrigaltrotters.com.au can enjoy the beauty that is so close to home. The Fred Hollows Foundation, Coastrek was held on the 6th March. Our team, ‘Agony of de Feet x4’ walked from Palm Beach to Balmoral, 55km. The event was open to anyone aged 18+ and they had to be in teams of 4. In the team though, 2 at least had to be female. The team had to start and finish with the same 4 members, no tag teams, in less than 18hours. There were two different walks on the day, both 55km. One started at Palm Beach and the other started at Coogee. Both finished at Balmoral. The teams were required to fundraise a minimum of $2,000 ($500 per team member) for The Fred Hollows Foundation. We raised our funds mainly through a BBQ at Avoca Surf club plus the generous donations of many friends and families that supported us. Even on the day of the walk, people were still donating to this worthy cause. A huge thank you to all who supported us financially and physically. It was and is very much appreciated. There were 4 waves, ½ hour apart, and the first starting at 6am. We were in the 6:30am wave. Ray Martin spoke to the crowd and did the final countdown to start us off. The sunrise was magnificent and it augured well for a spectacular day. The day provided stunning pristine beaches, craggy sea cliffs, single track bush trails and amazing views from the many headlands. On the website it said that there was 20% beach, 20% pathways and 60% bush. Along the way there were ‘Luv Stops’. These were the checkpoints where all team members had to be present and they also offered food, drinks and cold frozen ice blocks. These ice blocks (like zopper doopers) where fantastic… so cold and delicious. We all loved these and it was a complimentary item to help with the warm conditions. At the beginning of the day it was an incoming tide and so the walking on the beaches was in soft sand and at times a sprint – running up the beach away from a very fast moving and incoming wave!!! As the day ticked by though, the outgoing tide was a

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

bonus. This was particularly good on the beach from Narrabeen to Collaroy where the sand was much harder than we had experienced in training. Wahoo!!! Once we hit Manly we knew we had only 15km to go!!! No more beach walking and we passed all the little cafes and coves on the coastline. Before all the training for Coastrek we had not seen this part of the coastline. It was truly remarkable that it is all there for the public to enjoy, and enjoy we did! Doing this event in a team, means everyone is a winner. It helps the less fortunate, it deepens friendships and creates memories. It is the simple things in life that make a huge difference. Jeanette Dillon #217 was our Leader/Captain and she did a fantastic job keeping us motivated and organised. Liza Whitfield #513 was deputy dog and was able to get us the BBQ at Avoca which was our main fundraiser. Margie Harivel #135 was amazing in her organisation on the day, providing us with accommodation the night before at Newport, having food for brekkie and along the way and a husband, Harry (Graham Harival) #405, who drove us down to Sydney and also to the start the start line. Marg Aurich #17 and Barb Byrnes #508 were our fantastic support crew on the day. They were so generous with their time and the ease with which they supported us was incredible. Then there was me, I just did what I was told!!! A huge thank you once again to everyone involved to make this event a success for ALL!!! I loved every minute of it. Dotti Stockwell #302

Summit Sisters Bouddi Trail Event By Joann Litterick #760

Who are the Summit Sisters that Judy Murray talks about? Who are these Summit Sisters that I see at trail events in their pink or blue running shirts, always smiling and chatting away as they run? Well, I was about to find out. I signed up for their Bouddi Trail Event on March 8th. It was advertised as a beautiful trail, some relaxing yoga and a delicious meal awaiting YOU! A Summit Sisters trail event in the Bouddi National Park. The trail we will be exploring runs along the magnificent coastline starting from Putty Beach, and offers spectacular views across the water to Northern Sydney. You will run over sandstone plateaus with ancient rock formations, coastal scrub and to hidden beaches! We met at Putty Beach on a hazy but warm morning. Twenty women, including our hosts Jo and Gretel. Setting out for a one hour run or walk, we made our way to the rock lookout at Maitland Bay and return. This was not a race or timed event, it was about enjoying nature and the scenery, relaxing and getting in touch with ourselves. www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

Upon our return to Putty, a quick drink and a Carmen muesli bar, it was time for 40 mins of Yoga. Having never done this before I was a bit nervous about my ability to be able to complete it. I had no cause for concern, Jo directed us through the beginner class, which I found very relaxing and a nice way to stretch after the run. The best was yet to come. A beautifully presented and wonderfully healthy organic breakfast of Chia, Coconut and Berry pudding as well as organic tea or coffee followed. We sat together in fellowship as we ate, getting to know each other a little better. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning and look forward to meeting up again with some of my new "sisters", on a trail out there somewhere. www.summitsisters.com.au/

By Katy McCaig #816

When I signed up for 6ft track, I wasn't sure what to expect, but my running buddy Melissa Robertson, convinced me it would be fun. So training started mid-December giving me 12 weeks of solid preparation. My training schedule consisted of very early starts to accommodate my crazy running partner, and to juggle work and family commitments. Sunday mornings were long trail runs, Monday rest day, track sessions at Mingara on Tuesday, easy 10k or stair repeats Wednesdays, Thursday easy gym session, Friday hill repeats, Saturday easy pace trotters run. Race day came around quickly and started with a 5am knock at my door, but I was already awake. Got dressed ate my 90 second oats for brekky, then Mark Dunlop, Tom Robertson and I calmly walked to the starting line. It was great to see so many trotters there chatting and wishing each other good luck. I started in wave 3 with my other trail running buddy Jason Freney, we shot off the start line completing the single file, first kilometre in a blistering 16minutes. After a couple of kms the course opened up and we managed to pick up the pace and began overtaking people. By the time I reached the first check point at "Cox River" I was already 12 minutes off my goal pace. Keen to make up for lost time I dived into the river and swam across, then ran/walked the next section to Pluvi. I was confident from my weekly hill repeat training that I could run most of the hills and felt encouraged as I overtook a lot of people but had no idea if I had made up much time. (After the race I found out I had gone from 61st female at the first checkpoint to 26th at the second)

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

I found everyone out on the course to be very friendly and encouraging and willing to move out of your way if you wanted to pass on the single file parts of the run. I saw so many trotters in their club singlets and felt so proud to be wearing mine, especially each time I overtook someone in a Sydney Striders shirt. The course is beautiful with a bit of everything, lots of hills up and down, open fire trails, rocky descents, and some shallow creeks. The run was well organised and there was heaps of well stocked aid stations, meaning you really didn't need to carry anything on the run. With 10km to go I caught up with the ever encouraging Graham Ridley, who was able to pass on some good advice, telling me "to go for it, don't hold anything back, the last part was all runnable" That was all I needed, and with a surge of adrenaline I picked up my pace as I headed for home. The last 3kms was all downhill rocky and a bit dangerous, but fun at the same time. As you start to hear the cow bells ringing and people cheering it lifts your spirits and helps you finish with a huge smile. I was happy with my finishing time of 4hrs 48 mins but not stoked, as I know I have more in me. I highly recommend this run to anyone interested in doing a trail race and I plan to do it again next year and hopefully finish with a faster time. www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

CBR 100 Challenge Canberra By Oliver Warschkow On the trail of last weekend’s CBR 100 Challenge … this is early in the run, the morning sun had just come up, kangaroos were hopping about the place, and I still had some 90km in front of me. If there is one thing I have learned then it is that 100km is a loooooong way. It's a marathon, then another one, and then some. At times it felt like it would never end. Sections of 5km felt like 20km. There was always another turn, another climb, and another detour. All in all, it took me 23 1/2 hours to cover the distance; from 6am on Saturday to 5:30am on Sunday morning. Put that in context with the first-placed runner, who finished this in about 9 1/2 hours. Yep, I was pretty slow. Up to km 45, the going was good: I was walking the uphills and slow-jogging the flats and downhills as planned. Between 45 and 55 km it was mostly walking and much less jogging. From 55km onwards it was only walking, and the walking became quite slow in the steep and technical sections of Black Mountain (km 65-70) and Red Hill (around km 90). General exhaustion increasingly set in, my feet were in agony, and beyond about 65km the whole thing stopped being fun. I was never in doubt that I would finish the distance, but it took a considerable mental effort to keep going. Thankfully, the path was clearly marked along the way, and only at a few spots did I have to pull out the GPS and make sure that I was still on track. I can only imagine: getting off course, and having to backtrack would have been devastating. The conditions were nearly ideal with highs of 21 degrees during the day, and lows of 13 degrees during the night to Sunday not too hot and not too cold. Gear-wise, I was almost spot on. I had decided to take the larger hydration bladder of 2 litres, which was enough so that I had to refill only at the

www.terrigaltrotters.com.au

2nd (47km) and 3rd (77km) transition area checkpoint. The several unmanned water stops along the course were all a bit dodgy (in fact, one was missing outright), so I was glad not to have to rely on these. Hydration and nutrition during the run was good - no stomach issues or signs of dehydration. I also made a last-minute decision to pack the long-sleeved thermal top, which kept me comfortable during the night. Probably, the only thing to reconsider was my shoes. With hindsight, minimalist padding shoes may not have been the smartest choice, and my feet and ankles were letting me know it. I did not get a single blister though, so at least that has gone right. So would I do this again? I admit that prior to this weekend I did consider this event as an "easy" entry into the 100km distance, as preparation for more challenging courses such as the The Great North Walk 100s (GNW100s). As 100km events go, I would think, the CBR100 is comparatively straightforward, with at least half of the distance not on technical trails and a very generous cut-off time. That said, during the later stages of the event, thoughts to the effect of “do not ever do this again!” and “what insanity made me sign up for this?” became quite persistent, and I certainly now have a whole lot of new respect for the distance. The GNW 100k is all trail, and a relentless up-and-down, and it has a sharp cut-off at 22 hours. So with my 23 1/2 hours in Canberra it seems unlikely that I will be able to finish the GNW 100k in time, at least not in current form. There are probably a few things I can tweak (shoes to begin with) but I will also have to have a very hard think before entering the GNW. Probably not this year. Let’s see about next year ...

The Bay to Bay Running Festival needs your help. It's Bay to Bay time again! This year the event takes place on Sunday 14th June 2015 and we need volunteers to make the day a success. People who have done lots of races know how important it is to have volunteers helping to make it a success. You don't have to necessarily help out on the day as there is work to be done on the days before the event. This is our chance as a club to make the run an even bigger triumph and to give something back to the community. So, if you think you can help call Jenny Barker on 0420 879270
