ANNUAL REPORT and FINANCIAL REPORT for the year ended 31 December 2004
REPORT for the 10 Months ended 31 October 2005
WOMENS GOLF NEW ZEALAND SUMMARY Staff and Office Martyn Turner continued in his role as Acting Executive Director until the end of May 2005 when the staff moved into new offices shared with New Zealand Golf Association. From June 2005 till our official amalgamation on 31st October 2005 Patsy Hankins was Acting Executive Director. We continued to have a dedicated team who were committed to delivering the best to all of our members right up until the end of Womens Golf New Zealand – and many of the staff have merged into the new organisation - New Zealand Golf Incorporated. We ran a virtual office which continued to work well with four off site staff members carrying out their duties in “the field”. Our website was regularly updated, meetings held, mail outs distributed and we continued to contribute articles to the New Zealand Golf Gazette and the New Zealand Golf Update every month. Women’s golf was featured on the ING Golf Club Show – there were specific reports done on our 4 major events along with other smaller news items done throughout the year. Funding and Sponsorship Almost half our income is derived from grants and sponsorships. With gratitude we acknowledge SPARC's substantial funding of our high performance and player development programmes, significant grants from Southern Trust and NZ Community Trust, Lion Foundation's ongoing and generous backing of our major tournaments and the assistance of all other funders and sponsors in 2005. High Performance and Player Development We are delighted with the achievements of our high performance and player development programmes in 2005. Specifically we need to acknowledge Gaylene Eyre’s outstanding work as WGNZ Programme Manager. She has continued to manage a highly structured programme which has led to a continued high standard and performance of our elite athletes. Sharon Ahn won the NZ Strokeplay Championship, Sarah Nicholson won the Victorian 72 hole Strokeplay and Jenny Park won the Lake Macquarie Women’s Event , with the 2005 stand-out team performance being when New Zealand won the Tasman Cup off Australia – 10 years since we last won it. Girls Golf Another programme that continued going from strength to strength is Girls Golf. Co-ordinator Claire Paterson has continued doing an outstanding job working alongside districts and clubs introducing young girls to the game. A record 91 clubs are now registered, with 13 out of 14 districts being ‘girls golf’ friendly. Acknowledgements Hosting a national tournament is a huge commitment for any club, often involving hours of preparation and disruption to normal club play. We acknowledge and thank the clubs which hosted events so successfully in 2005. WGNZ is indebted to the many volunteers, who give their time and expertise in the interests of women’s golf. In particular we acknowledge the contribution of the High Performance and Technical Reference Group members, the Audit Committee, National Advisory Councillors, District Associations and Club Committees. Obituary With regret we record the passing of two Life Members this year, Lady Rae Meech and Mrs. Eda Aplin. Lady Rae and Eda both made notable contributions to women’s golf which are detailed on separate pages in this report. Our condolences to both Lady Rae and Eda’s families. Board At the beginning of 2005 Womens Golf New Zealand welcomed a new Board member to replace Sue Bunt who retired at the end of 2004 – Linda Ayson. Linda was on the Board for five months before stepping off the Board and taking up a position as Accounts & Administration Manager at New Zealand Golf Association.

MEMBERSHIP The trend of increasing Junior and 9 hole membership slowed down in 2005, with both categories registering a drop in numbers – Junior decreased by 2%, while 9 hole dropped by 4%. However in the only upward swing, Twilight membership increased by 5%. All but 1 district (Canterbury – increased by 1%) experienced a drop in full playing members; the average decrease was 4%. The total membership of all affiliated women golfers across all categories dropped by 3.53% - and now stands at 33,085. The Girls Golf programme expanded to 13 out of the 14 districts – we now have 91 golf clubs throughout New Zealand promoting “Girls Golf”, which are not counted as female juniors as the majority do not hold a handicap. 40000 35000 30000 25000 20000

FUNDING
Golf was again named as one of New Zealand’s seven “priority sports” and because of this we received funding for two programmes, firstly to encourage health and fitness by ‘more people playing golf more often’ and secondly for ‘high performance’ through the New Zealand Academy of Sport. We are extremely grateful to SPARC for their ongoing financial support and services they provide, particularly to our top athletes through their high performance branch - the New Zealand Academy of Sport. Special thanks to Steve Symonds and Deslea Wrathall for their continuing guidance and support. Mutual Assistance Plan The Mutual Assistance Plan (MAP) has continued to provide assistance to Womens Golf New Zealand through funding for the development of junior golf and golf development around the country.
GAMING MACHINE TRUSTS
The Lion Foundation again helped fund 3 of our major tournaments (NZ Stroke Play, NZ Under 21 and the Interprovincial), along with the international Tasman Cup which we hosted early in 2005. Their support continues to be a vital part of our organisation and we thank them for it.
The Southern Trust was again a major contributor to the 2005 High Performance programme. They donated money for 3 major international tournaments (South Pacific Open, Victorian Stroke Play and Queen Sirikit Cup), as well as a development camp coinciding with a major domestic event – the Lawnmaster Classic.
The National Office was particularly grateful to the New Zealand Community Trust for their support with operating costs. This meant that funds generated from levies could be used for the direct benefit of women’s golf.
SPONSORSHIP
Acushnet Company market Titleist and Footjoy golf products and their support is vital to the National High Performance programme. Titleist Academy athletes and Development Squad members are provided and expected to use throughout the year Titleist caps, Titleist balls and Footjoy gloves, ensuring all Womens Golf New Zealand press and TV coverage contains the Titleist logo. Titleist Academy members are also given Footjoy shoes, and all teams travelling overseas representing New Zealand are given Titleist golf bags and coveralls. Early in 2005 all Titleist Academy and Development Squad members were photographed wearing their Titliest uniform. These photos were supplied to the print media throughout New Zealand and have been used extensively, while all Academy and Development Squad members were required to wear Titleist branded clothing during TV interviews.
Peter Sissons of Under Par Golf Ltd again supplied the prizes for the 18 Hole and 9 Hole Home Links District and National winners. We thank Peter for his valuable support and time he puts into the women’s game.
HIGH PERFORMANCE The Titleist Academy and Development Squad have had a very successful year in 2005 under the guidance of Gaylene Eyre, Womens Golf New Zealand Programme Manager and the two national coaches used in 2005 - Geoff Smart till March 2005, and Marnie McGuire from May 2005. The highlights of 2005 included winning the Tasman Cup after a 10 year gap, the bi-annual event is held over two days between Australia and New Zealand, with the host country alternating every two years. Along with Sarah Nicholson winning the Victorian
Stroke Play and Jenny Park winning the Lake Macquarie (both high ranking Australian events), the New Zealand Stroke Play was also won by a kiwi – Sharon Ahn.

OBITUARY – LADY RAE MEECH
LADY RAE MEECH
Lady Rae Meech started her golfing life as Mrs VS Meech (nee Rachel Anderson) at Mornington GC in Wellington in 1943, where she played for 3 years until her handicap had reduced sufficiently to be able to join Mirimar GC with her husband Jack. She won the Bronze Championship that year, was subsequently Silver Champion 5 times, reduced to a 6 handicap and represented Wellington in the Russell Grace Interprovincial Tournament. What was to be a long involvement in golf administration began in 1956 when she was elected to the club committee, and then had 4 terms as club captain from 1960. During this time she assisted with the formation of the Wellington District Ladies’ Golf Association, on which she served as secretary, selector and then President from 1962 to 1966. In November 1966 Mrs Meech succeeded Mrs VS (Edith) Land as NZLGU Executive Council Member for the Wellington District. Her husband John, who as head of the Department of Internal Affairs from 1959-67 organised two royal tours to NZ, was knighted by the Queen in 1969. Lady Meech captained the 1970 Tasman Cup team to Sydney, represented the Union on the NZ Golf Foundation Committee, served on the Central Committee for 7 years, and was Chairman in 1972 and 1973. She retired at the 1976 AGM after 10 years on the Council. The following year she was appointed a Life Vice President of the NZLGU, and then later honoured again with appointment as New Zealand’s English LGU Vice President for 1984. Judith Hanratty, a Wellington and national representative during Lady Meech’s term on the NZLGU, a lawyer now domiciled in UK with a senior position in an International corporation, writes as follows: “Rae Meech was a long standing and very hard working official for women’s golf who enjoyed the role of administrator and took those responsibilities seriously, playing a significant role in the evolution of the constitution of what, at the time of her death, was Womens Golf New Zealand. She was extremely knowledgeable about the rules of the game and an excellent referee, a role she carried out at national and international level. “She understood well the importance of publicity in promoting the game and making it attractive to new players, and cultivated the press to the advantage of the game. During her time in office the women’s game enjoyed some of the best publicity it has ever had. “Her time as an administrator coincided with the period when women’s golf was transformed from a genteel game played very much as an amateur pastime to a serious sport in which being successful as an amateur could be a prelude to a well paid professional career. She was captain of the District team at the time Marilyn Smith (Shandon GC) became the first woman touring professional in the USA. As a leader during that transition she oversaw many significant and worthy changes in the way the game was administered and the movement to encourage young people into the game.” That Lady Meech clearly made a significant contribution to women’s golf at all levels is evident in that she was honoured with Life Membership of her club, her district, and the national body. That she was also a Life Member of the Sacred Heart Tennis Club and of the Victoria Bridge Club indicates that women’s golf was not the only organisation in which she made her mark. Lady Meech retained an active interest in women’s golf which did not wane with advancing years – since 1999 Womens Golf New Zealand AGMs have been held in Wellington each year, and Lady Meech (with assistance from Dorothy Stewart) attended every one until the 2004 meeting, when she was indisposed and unable to be present. Lady Meech passed away on 18 March 2005, in her 95th year. With thanks to Dorothy Stewart and Judith Hanratty for information used in compiling this obituary.
OBITUARY – EDA APLIN
EDA APLIN (FORMERLY EDA MUNRO)
Eda Munro joined the Te Awamutu Golf Club in 1943. She became an accomplished player – her lowest handicap was 3 - and won the Club Championship six times between 1954 and 1961. At a provincial level she represented Waikato/King Country in the Russell Grace Interprovincial for 8 years. During this time she became involved in administration at her club, and served as Club Captain 1955 – 1957, then President 1958 – 1959 and again in 1965. The tremendous contribution she made to the ladies club was acknowledged when she was awarded Life Membership in 1979. Her husband Tom was a dairy farmer, and Mrs Munro played a full part in farming activities. They successfully combined dairy farming with golf, in which both were very involved. Tom served on the Waikato Golf Association, and Eda was the Southern zone representative on the Waikato/King Country District Ladies’ Golf Association from 1957 to 1980. She was elected President in 1966. When Phyl MacDiarmid retired as the Waikato/King Country NZLGU Executive Council Member in November 1970, Mrs Munro was appointed to succeed her and held the dual positions of Executive Member and President until 1978, the year her husband died, when she retired as President. Mrs Munro served 10 years on the NZLGU Executive Council, including two as Chairman (1977-78), and two as President (197980). She was non-playing captain of the NZ team which competed in the Espirito Santo in Fiji in 1978. On retirement from the Executive Council after her term as President, Mrs Munro was elected a Life Member of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union at the Annual General Meeting in September 1980. That year she was also elected as a Life Member of the Waikato/King Country District Ladies’ Golf Association. Later her contribution to women’s golf was again acknowledged by her appointment as New Zealand’s LGU Vice President for 1987. “To be granted Life Membership of the three organisations to which she contributed so much was a remarkable achievement and a measure of her standing in the golfing world. “………… Two of her associates on the national scene all those years ago described her as a gracious and outstanding lady widely respected by all those with whom she was involved.” (From the Eulogy given by long time friend Mr Les Munro at Eda Aplin’s service) Eda Aplin is survived by her second husband, Athol Aplin, and was in her 93rd year when she passed away on 15 August 2005. With thanks to Mr Les Munro and Jan Wilson for information used in compiling this obituary.
