Barbershops, 1852-2009
Daniel A. Murphy operated "fashionable shaving and hairdressing
rooms" at the Berwick House at the turn of the century. The poster
in the upper right of the barbershop window advertised Buffalo
Bill's Wild West Show at the Rutland Fairgrounds on Monday, 14
June 1897.
About the Author Bill Mazzariello was raised in a family of barbers so it was only natural to begin working in the family barbershop in 1991 alongside his father. A few years ago he began inquiring about his grandfather, Tom Mazzariello, Sr., who was the first member of his family to enter the trade. Family members supplied him with answers about the origin of the shop and his grandfather but his interest was piqued about all the barbershops in Rutland and so he began compiling a list of all the barbershops and the barbers who worked in the City of Rutland from 1852 through 2009. Bill continues to work at the Star Barbershop at 114 Merchants Row.
Introduction If these walls could talk! In nearly 160 years in Rutland there were plenty of barbershop walls holding secrets and gossip. In the early period there were hairdressers from Ireland, England, and France working in these shops. In the Twentieth Century Italian barbers dominated the cutting workforce. Compiled in this collection are the names and places of these tonsorial businesses. The list is organized by the number of years the barbershops were in operation and include their locations as well as the barbers who worked there. Since some barbers worked in various shops, their names appear more than once in this extensive list.
