Prelude

Komm, Gott Schopfer, Heiliger Geist.............................. J. S. Bach / J. G. Walther (18th c.) Come, O Creator Spirit blest, And in our souls take up Thy rest; Come with Thy grace and heavenly aid To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer

Almighty and most merciful God, grant, we beg you, that by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we may be enlightened and strengthened for your worship; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end.

Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God “For Your Gift of God the Spirit”

No. 339

+Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, both by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. Too often we have failed to welcome into our hearts your quickening Spirit of love and power. Too often we have spurned the promptings of your Holy Spirit and ignored your presence by the Spirit. Too often we have grieved the Holy Spirit and have not kept in step with him. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. Wash away our sins; send rain on our dry ground; inflame our cold hearts; and direct our wandering feet into your ways. And all for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV)

*Confession of Faith

Q. What do you believe concerning “the Holy Spirit”? A. First, he, as well as the Father and the Son, is eternal God. Second, he has been given to me personally, so that, by true faith, he makes me share in Christ and all his blessings, comforts me, and remains with me forever. Heidelberg Catechism No. 53.

*Hymn of Faith in God “This Day at Thy Creating Word”

No. 394

Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings

“O Breath of Life” (Tune: Spiritus Vitae).....Mary J. Hammond (1878 - 1964) / R. J. Bechtel, arr.

O Lord of heaven, and earth, and sea, To thee all praise and glory be; How shall we show our love to thee, Giver of all? Thou didst not spare thine only Son, But gav’st him for a world undone, And freely with that Blessed One Thou givest all. Thou giv’st the Spirit’s blessed dower, Spirit of life, and love, and power, And dost his sevenfold graces shower Upon us all. We lose what on ourselves we spend, We have as treasure without end Whatever, Lord, to thee we lend, Who givest all. Amen.

*Congregational Petitions and the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)

Scripture Lesson Sermon

Acts 15:22–35 (ESV p. 924) “Love at Work”

The Lord’s Supper

The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord’s Supper.

Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. Please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who You are. Give me an understanding of You that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that You promise. Amen. Draw us in the Spirit’s tether; For when humbly, in thy name, Two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluya! Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment’s hem. As the brethren used to gather In the name of Christ to sup, Then with thanks to God the Father Break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluya! Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living Make as sacraments of thee, That by caring, helping, giving, We may true disciples be. Alleluya! Alleluya! We will serve thee faithfully. Harold W. Friedell

*Congregation sings verse one. Verse Two (Choir) Lobe den Herren der alles so herrlich regieret, Der dich auf Adelers Fittichen sicher, Dich sicher gefüret, Der dich erhält, wie es dir selber gefällt; Hast du nicht dieses verspüret? *Benediction +Silent Prayer

Send, we beg you, Almighty God, your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that he may direct and rule us according to your will, comfort us in all our afflictions, defend us from all error, and lead us into all truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen. Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, Our light and comfort from above. Be Thou our guardian, Thou our Guide Over every thought and step preside. Lead us to Christ, the living Way, Nor let us from His precepts stray. Lead us to holiness, the road That we must take to dwell with God. The light of Truth to us display, And make us know and choose the Way. Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from Thee may never depart. Lead us to Heaven that we may share Fullness of joy forever there. Lead us to God, our final rest, To be with Him forever blest. Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, Our light and comfort from above. Words by Simon Browne (1680-1732)/John Purifoy

Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek “Jesus,” XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, “Christ;” NIKA means “He conquers.” The symbol then reads “Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross” or “Jesus Christ Victor.”

Men of Faith Spring Breakfast We are pleased to have Dr. C. John “Jack” Collins address us at our annual men’s breakfast Saturday May 21st at 8 am.  Dr. Collins is a professor of Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.  He once was an intern here at FPC during his seminary days.  He also served on the translation committee for the English Standard Version and will speak to us on that subject.  Please sign up in the narthex so we know how much food to buy and prepare.  The cost is $8. Adult Sunday School • The Women of Faith Class I (WIC Room 117) We are reading Sensei, by Russell Hitt.  This fascinating biography is about Irene Webster-Smith, an Irish woman born in 1888, who became a missionary to Japan, rescuing prostitutes and geisha girls and leading them to Christ. Join us in the WIC room if you’d like to read and discuss this book together. • The Women of Faith Class II (Room 301) We are studying together the book of Luke. • The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) We are watching a DVD series entitled “Only Two Religions”. Dr. Peter Jones examines the worldview and fundamental religious convictions that drive modern culture. He demonstrates that in the final analysis, there can be only two religions – worship of the Creator or worship of creation. Elder Paul Darby leads our discussion. • High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) The high school class continues in its series on a Christian understanding of gender and sexual identity. • Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) This class led by Tim Bentson and Andrew Milton is going through What Christians Believe, an ESL Bible study by J. Wesley Eby. Music Ministry: Choristers Choristers is FPC’s children’s vocal ensemble program that provides musical training for treble voices.  Participants must be able to read simple English and be responsive to general classroom expectations.  They meet each Wednesday evening, 7:00 – 8:15, in the Choir Room.  Commonly they are preparing for singing periodically in FPC’s worship services.  For more information, contact Choristers Director Melissa McMillan. Music Ministry: Free Recital This Saturday, 2:00 pm Make Saturday, May 21, 2:00 p.m. an artistic afternoon for you, your family, and friends. Sydney Jarrard, daughter of former FPC members Jamie and Rebecca Jarrard, will play a piano recital in the sanctuary. Sydney is an excellent musician, dedicated church musician, and student at the University of North Carolina (Greensboro). The recital is free and open to the public. Donation accepted at the door for the Alliance of Christian Musicians. Music Ministry: Summer Singing Camp Registration will soon be open for the ACM Children’s (ages 5 +) Summer Singing Camp directed by Melissa McMillan, July 11-15, 9:30-11:30 a.m., at FPC. Sonia King from Pilgrim Bible Church will assist in the camp’s leadership. The camp will conclude with a final concert on Friday, July 15, 7:00 p.m. Register online at acmusicians.org.
