Convenor’s Report 1. Orienteering Clubs, Orienteering Victoria & Orienteering Australia We were very fortunate to have the most valuable assistance of David Jaffe and Nicola Dalheim (Melbourne Forest Racers), Blair Trewin (Orienteering Australia), Bruce Arthur, Mark Hennessy and Ruth Goddard (Orientering Victoria), Mark Valentine & Ian Chennell (Eureka Orienteers), Debbie and Ian Dodd (Dandenong Ranges Orienteering Club) for pre-championships organization and during the championships. The above-mentioned individuals were able to assist with advice and direction in the key aspects of the Schools organisation. 2. Schools Events Organisers. Two clubs in particular put in a tremendous effort to organize and run the schools events. The sprint event was run by the Eureka Orienteers, with a special mention to Roch Prendergast (Organiser) and Blair Trewin (Controller) as well as all the helping hands on the day. The Individual and Relay events were run by the Melbourne Forest Racers, with thanks to David Jaffe and Nicola Dalheim (Organisers), Clare Baker and Kirsten Fairfax (Course Planners) and Mandy Hennessy (Controller). The events would not have been possible without the hard work of Ian Chennell (Sport Ident), Debbie & Ian Dodd (Entries) and Christopher Naunton (commentary, GPS tracking and results). These people made the event run smoothly and created an exciting experience for all competitors and spectators. 3. Host Clubs Thanks again to the following clubs, who planned, organised and successfully facilitated the Schools events – Melbourne Forest Racers and Eureka Orienteers. 4. All Australian Teams Selectors Thank you to the All Australian Teams Selectors – Rohan Hyslop, Bridget Anderson and Stephen Bird for all their contributions in their roles as selectors of the All Australian teams. 5. Jury Thank you to the Protest Jury Neil Simson, Anthea Feaver, Mike Dowling and Ian Dalton for putting their hands forward.

Jeanetta provided tireless support, from organizing program printing, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, facilitating the educational excursion as well as being a fount of good advice. Howard was a vital help and provided invaluable advice. Thanks also to Jude Maguire and Rob Carroll (President) for speaking at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and assisting with medal presentations, and for Brad Allen (SSA) for lending authority to the Opening Ceremony. A huge thanks goes to Ian Dalton (National Secretary) for his advice and assistance with competition rules, results and scoring. 8. Team Officials Thanks to all team officials for their cooperation & patience. All team management was very easy to get on with and had an excellent attitude to the competition and the Championship in general. 9. Presentation Dinner The Victoria Bowls Club was an excellent venue for the Team Officials’ Dinner. A huge thanks to our guest speaker on the night in Steven Monaghetti, champion Australian Marathon and cross country runner. His words were fascinating, motivating and highly entertaining, and much praise was received for his speech following the ceremony. Thank you to David Jaffe (Melbourne Forest Racers) for his assistance in acting as the Master of Ceremonies & Ian Dalton (National Secretary) helping make the night a success. 10. 11. Educational Excursion The Educational Excursion involved a morning at Sovereign Hill, including lunch. The Educational Excursion for the 12 years & under involved going to Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. Thank you to Jeanetta Rodwell for all her assistance in the organization of the tour. Feed-back from all teams was very positive. 12. Team Members The team members were fantastically behaved, both during and after competition. Their behaviour throughout the week and the spirit in which competitions were run was a credit to them all and their team coaches and managers. 13. National Secretary’s Report The 2015 Australian Schools Orienteering Championships was held at the Federation University (Mt Helen) and Deep Creek, Cambelltown. This was the first time the championships hosted three events as part of the championships. The weather for the schools competition and excursion was far better than was anticipated for the week with all three schools competition days being greeted with perfect orienteering weather. The schools individual sprint event was hosted at Federation University and was a great introduction for the Sprint Championship. The course planners made good use of the facilities placing the finish area in a small courtyard that provided perfect spectator access not only for seeing the finishing competitors but also the starters and also competitors mid way through their courses. Some of the winning times were under the expected winning times but most officials thought it was not a big concern considering the big workload the student competitors would have for the week. Competitors were presented with terrain that would test them both physically and navigationally. The three championship events would see a great battle between ACT and Tasmania for first place as they both tied for the first 2 days leaving the relay to decide the final outcome. Queensland, Victoria and South Australia were left to battle out third place over the three days. The overall result saw Tasmania win on 62 points with ACT settling for second with 61points and Victoria Sharing third with Queensland on 54points. In the Southern Cross Challenge NZ as per usual took a commanding lead with a total 89pts to have a commanding win over ACT and Tasmania who both tied for second with 63 points. Victoria held off Queensland by 1 point to take fourth spot on 56 points. This year again saw live streaming of results and footage from the uni and forest to viewers around the world, but with and added bonus of GPS tracking. Competitors were given the opportunity to race with European Technology allowing spectators and coaches an insight into how the competitors handle the stress out on course. The viewing provided some exciting racing and also some spectacular errors from competitors as well! A big thankyou to the Eureka Orienteers, Melbourne Forest Racers and specifically Christopher Naughton and Jim Russell who provided the equipment and know how to allow this to happen. Its fantastic that this technology is loaned to us for the benefit of parents who can’t travel with their children but want to follow the results closely from elsewhere. The visit to the Sovereign Hill was enjoyed by the students and officials with most enjoying the opportunity to stroll around after such a hectic few days of racing.. Orienteering VIC were excellent hosts. My thanks go to all association members, in particular Aislinn Prendergast (Schools Liason) Mark Valentine (Canival Director) David Jaffe, Course Setters and all the volunteers throughout the 9 day event, for their work and for providing such high quality courses and terrain, throughout the week.

My thanks are extended to Jeanetta Rodwell from School Sport Victoria for her contribution to the success of the championship as well as Howard Louis who did all the preparation prior to the championships. Jeanetta, Howard and Aislinn Prendergast did an excellent job throughout the lead up to the event and were always on hand to ensure the smooth running of the tournament. Their committee was at all times mindful of sport’s needs and was a step ahead in the necessary organisational requirements as well as also assisting team officials with every request. I would like to acknowledge the significant number of parents and supporters who were in attendance for the entire championship. They were so supportive of the competitors and were equally impressed with the organisation and running of the event. It was also fantastic to be able to recognise the contributions of all of the team officials at the official dinner. Particular mention must be made of the guest speaker Steve Moneghetti, Australian Marathon Representative, who spoke of this commitment to running and how hard work is required and that there are no short cuts to success. He was able to provide a little insight into how his training philosophy can flow into Orienteering. His speech was well received, probably more so by all the officials who would have watched him raced over his career!! I would especially like to thank everyone associated with this tournament as part of the organising committee, or as a team official from the competing teams. It has been a pleasure to work with a group of people whose aim has quite obviously keen to provide a quality competition for the secondary school orienteers in all states, territories and New Zealand in an environment which I think is a credit to the organisation of school sport in this country. This interaction has strengthened the tie between the 2 orienteering countries and has pushed the standard of orienteering higher within the Junior Ranks. This interaction has allowed ex school orienteers from both countries to go on and win gold medals at the Junior World Orienteering championships over the past 10 years. It has been an absolute pleasure to be involved as National Secretary for the past 9 years and I look forward to seeing Orienteering take on a new leadership.

    

Thankyou to SSV, Orienteering Victoria and especially Aslinn putting in the third event. Ian is standing down as of the end of this year and we are looking for someone to step up. Ian will send out the nomination form so those who may have not seen it, receive a copy. A big thankyou to Rohan and Anna Hyslop who took the international team away. Ian has approached Orienteering Australia about having Orienteering added to the Pacific School Games in 2017. It is currently sitting with the OA board. Ian thanked all the course setters for the event.

7.

Most juniors were happy to wear a gps tracker. Those that didn’t had their allocation passed onto another. Most were in favour of the flower ceremonies introduced this year. It was a great way to recognize the winners on the day and at the venue. Concerns were raised about the interaction between spectators and competitors at the sprint event. Some suggested having a dedicated sprint area. Suggestions and guidelines to be investigated Afternoon model worked well. Priority for School Sport sprint in each state. Ian will send out surveys to students and officials to gauge the new addition. 3.1.1 12-15min winning time. Consideration for next year to have closer winning times to the outlined 12-15min. As new event there was no prior knowledge of previous winning times to go by. Consideration may need to be given to delayed starts between the junior and senior categories. Maybe juniors start 10min earlier. Quarantine needs to be so that you cannot see the map and surroundings. Classic event and the relay went really well. Technology – GPS trackers on a voluntary basis. All team managers moved a motion of formal thanks to Orienteering Victoria and Toph Naughton for their efforts. General Business
