Freight is a big CO2 emitter Carbon dioxide emissions from all domestic transport and road freight now account for 8%

carbon dioxide emissions.

92% of domestic transport emissions are from road modes

– Carbon Pathways DfT 2008 Rail freight produces 70% less carbon dioxide per tonne carried than the equivalent road journey Rail freight produces almost 90% less PM10 emissions than road freight and up to fifteen times less NOX emissions – DfT Logistics Perspective Dec 2008 P8 paragraph 10

Energy efficiency is directly related to carbon dioxide emissions, rail is significantly more

energy efficient than other modes with the exception of shipping. a tonne of goods can

travel 246 miles by rail as opposed to 88 miles by road on a gallon of fuel

Source Network Rail Value of Freight July 2010

Rail freight emits 75% less greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of freight moved compared to the road freight transport sector. Investing in energy efficiency further enhances rail transport’s competitiveness as economies transition to a low carbon future.1
