North Hollywood Captain’s Corner: As the new commanding officer at North Hollywood, I am pleased to report that there has been a drop in crime across our division. This is certainly very good news. However, our biggest struggle remains in the area of property crimes. This is particularly true in regard to burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles. I have taken a number of steps to combat this problem, the first of which is the formation of the new Crime Suppression Task Force. This task force’s

primary function it to target problem locations within the division, particularly those with spikes in the aforementioned vehicle-related crimes. Although the Crime Suppression Task Force has only been in place a short time, it has already resulted in a reduction in crime. I would also like to take an opportunity to introduce Captain Duane Hayakawa as your Commanding Officer, Patrol Division. In his previous assignment, he was the Commanding Officer of Mission Patrol Division. I look forward to working with Duane in partnership in making North Hollywood Area a safer place to work and live.

On April 12, 2010, the 23rd Annual East Valley Police Activity League Supporters (PALS) Golf Tournament will be held at the Moorpark Country Club. This is a fun day of golf that raises money to support North Hollywood’s PALS program. The East Valley PALS is a civilian-run, volunteer organization that funds many of the activities that take place at North Hollywood Area, including our police cadets, our Jeopardy program, and our Junior DAPs program. PALS is an active and extremely positive organization that funds numerous community activities, from our various holiday give-aways to the underprivileged, to our annual open house and Halloween “haunted jail,” to purchasing much-needed equipment for our station. If you’d like to attend the golf tournament, or just lend your support to PALS, please contact Police Officers Harry Van Vorst or Heather Kowalczyk, at (818) 623-4001 for tickets.

Crime Prevention Tips As technology advances we have found better ways to communicate with each other. The LAPD has decided to utilize a new system which will allow us to distribute information quickly, with the ability to post pictures, including persons we may be looking for. This new system is called NIXLE. You can register on this system by going to LAPDonline.org and clicking on the NIXLE frame on the lower right side of the webpage. This will take you to the NIXLE log on page. You can register both your home email and cell phone (if email compatible). This program has already proven to be successful, as we have been able to send numerous notifications out which has helped us on our quest to fight crime. Sign up today! Residential parking structures, even secured, are not exempt from being victimized. It goes without saying, if you live in or frequent the area, secure all personal property inside the trunk of your vehicle. This is one crime that can be greatly reduced with the help of the community being informed and educated.

Basic Car 15A67 Senior Lead Officer Robert Benavidez Cell Phone (818) 634-0978 [email protected] Current Crime Trends Based on the statistics for this period, my area’s overall numbers were about the same as last month. We continue to see a steady occurrence of burglary theft from vehicles in the NoHo Arts district. The area south of Magnolia Boulevard picked up during the first part of the month, however, we did see a reduction in this area during the last week of the month. This may be due to the deployment of additional police resources in and around the Metro Red Line Station. Grand theft auto, robberies and thefts did not change much from last month. Residential burglaries remained down. There were two homes broken into in the Toluca Lake area on the same day during the first week of March. Officers

Current Crime Trends In looking at the crime numbers for Studio City, crime is slightly up from the last period. The major problem continues to be burglary theft from motor vehicles. There is a heavy concentration of crimes in Reporting District 1586. This is south of Moorpark Street to Ventura Boulevard and east of Tujunga Avenue to the 170 freeway. On a positive note, I have seen a significant decrease of crimes in the Fryman Park area.
