CONNECTION_DIRECTION: (Optional) You can control the direction of data flow between the Nasuni Desktop Client and the Nasuni Filer. For bi-directional data flow, enter 3. This is the default. For data flow from Filer to Client, enter 1. For data flow from Client to Filer, enter 2. Warning: If a file changes on the Nasuni Desktop Client and synchronizes with the Nasuni Filer, the Client version of the file overwrites the Filer version of the file if it already exists. To recover an earlier version of the file, use File Browser. Warning: When considering synchronizing data in existing folders, especially when the folders already contain data, verify that you want them synchronized. If you want the data to be separate, creating another directory or share that is not synchronized might be preferable.

INSTANT_UPLOAD: (Optional) To allow uploads of smaller files to the Nasuni Filer before the expiration of the Sync Frequency, enter 1. To disable Instant Upload, enter 0 (zero). If Instant Upload is enabled, enter MAX_FILE_SIZE_UPLOAD in MB. The default value is 2 MB. Note: If you increase the “Maximum file size”, then data already in the target directory that is now smaller than the new “Maximum file size” does not upload to the Nasuni Filer before the Sync Frequency expires. However, new data in the target directory that is smaller than the new “Maximum file size” does upload to the Nasuni Filer before the Sync Frequency expires.

MAX_ALLOWED_DISK_CAPACITY: (Optional) Enter the percentage of the local disk to use.

c. Save and exit the Config.ini file. 4. At the command prompt, execute this command a second time: /usr/bin/nasuni-desktop-client & This launches the Nasuni Desktop Client. Warning: Do not delete the .Config.json file that is created during this process. Tip: A command similar to the above should be executed whenever the computer reboots. Continue with “Using the Nasuni Desktop Client (Linux)” on page 31.

Nasuni Desktop Client controls (Windows and Mac OS X) You can perform a number of actions using the Nasuni Desktop Client controls. To access the Nasuni Desktop Client controls, click the Nasuni Desktop Client icon on your screen.

Figure 1-24: Nasuni Desktop Client icon.

The color of the Nasuni Desktop Client icon indicates the state of the Nasuni Desktop Client, as follows: •

Red: Indicates critical conditions, including service not responding, unable to access the Nasuni Filer, and authentication failure.

Yellow: Indicates connection-specific conditions. A yellow icon with yellow information indicates conditions such as an invalid connection. A yellow icon with a yellow cross indicates conditions such as quota exceeded and client space limit exceeded. When the icon is yellow, the Manage Connection option in the menu has a yellow information overlay, and the menu itself is blue. Note: If the icon is yellow because a previous sync attempt exceeded the quota of the Nasuni Filer, and a smaller file that does not exceed the quota is synchronized, the icon might temporarily turn green before reverting back to yellow again.

Green: Indicates synchronization states. Green with a green check mark indicates that the application is In Sync. Green with a blue check mark indicates that the application is Out of Sync. Green with a white check mark indicates that there is no connection.

The Nasuni Desktop Client control menu appears.

Using the Nasuni Desktop Client (Windows and Mac OS X) After the Nasuni Desktop Client is installed and configured, you can use it to easily copy files to and from the Nasuni Filer. Warning: The Nasuni Desktop Client is intended for single user systems. Do not use it for multiple users on the same system. Warning: Even if Case-Sensitive Paths is enabled for a share, file and folder names might be treated as case-insensitive. That is, file names such as “ABCD.txt” and “Abcd.txt” might be judged as identical. Avoid file and folder names that are caseinsensitive versions of other file and folder names. Warning: Because Microsoft Windows considers certain file names to be special, such as AUX, LPT1, and names containing special characters, avoid using such files with the Desktop Client.

Using files or folders from the Nasuni Filer In step 3 on page 19 you selected a source share on the Nasuni Filer. Any files or folders in that source share are available in the target directory you selected in step 4 on page 19. To use files or folders from the Nasuni Filer, follow these steps: 1. Navigate to the target directory you selected in step 4 on page 19. 2. Within the target directory, navigate to the files or folders you want to use. On this display, there are several different kinds of icons: •

Green with checkmark: This folder or file has synchronized with the Nasuni Filer.

Red with exclamation point: This folder or file has not yet synchronized with the Nasuni Filer.

Tip: If the icons are not what you expect, try refreshing the display. 3. You can perform actions on any of these files or folders, including opening, copying, and deleting. Note: The specific results of some actions depend on the Connection Direction chosen in step c on page 21.

Warning: When considering synchronizing data in existing folders, especially when the folders already contain data, verify that you want them synchronized. If you want the data to be separate, creating another directory or share that is not synchronized might be preferable. Note: If you create a large directory structure on the Nasuni Desktop Client and then immediately attempt to rename a file or folder in that structure, you might receive a message that a file or folder is currently open by another process. This is expected behavior. To add files or folders to the Nasuni Filer, follow these steps: 1. Copy files or folders. 2. Navigate to the target directory you selected in step 4 on page 19. 3. Within the target directory, navigate to the folder where you want to add files or folders. 4. Paste the copied files or folders in the target directory. On this display, there are several different kinds of icons: •

Green with checkmark: This folder or file has been synchronized with the Nasuni Filer.
