Change your clocks back one hour on Sunday Nov. 6

When it’s time to “fall back” and change our clocks back one hour on Sunday, Nov. 6, make sure to change the batteries in all of your smoke alarms as well…it could save your life! Having a “working” smoke alarm reduces a person’s chance of dying in a fire by half. For the very best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside every sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or ceilings, and tested monthly. It’s important to replace smoke alarm batteries at least twice a year, unless they’re 10-year lithium batteries. Even if your smoke alarms are hardwired, replace the batteries in case of a power outage. Have a home escape plan and practice your plan with your family, this includes having a designated meeting place outside. Stay safe!

El Cajon Police Station Grand Opening & Dedication

The official dedication celebration of the new El Cajon Police Station will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 100 Civic Center Way in downtown El Cajon. The Granite Hills High School Choir will be singing the National Anthem during the dedication ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Visitors will see law enforcement displays, including SWAT and other specialized police units located in the parking lot, and tours will be given of the new high-tech facility. This day, November 12, also marks the City of El Cajon’s 99th Birthday!

Help for the holidays – East County Toy & Food Drive

Do you need help during the holidays? Now through November 23, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. - applications will be accepted by the Salvation Army for those requesting holiday assistance of food and toys from the East County Toy & Food Drive. he Partners Therapeutic Horse Show and BBQ was held Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Lone Oak Ranch in Lakeside. The fourth annual horseshow and barbeque featured talented students displaying their horsemanship skills. One of the riders, now 23-years-old, has been with the program for 10 years progressing from simple commands on horseback to having his own driver’s license, attending community college and helping Partners with the horses. The barbeque, provided by the Lakeside Optimists, was served to more than 200 people. Attendants were treated to games, carnival booths for the children, and auction items to benefit the Partners Program. For information call (619) 561-6375.

Starbucks Grand Opening

Starbucks Grand Opening will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the new Lakeside shopping center at 15511 Winter Garden Blvd. The theme for the event is “Coffee’s from around the World.” A coffee seminar with

pastry pairing, sampling and other events are scheduled.

New Fire Station

Saturday, Dec. 17 is the scheduled date for the grand opening for the new fire station 2 on 12216 Lakeside Ave. in Lakeside. The Eucalyptus Hills Station number 2 will be closing. The nearly 50-year-old station opened in early 1960s. When the station first opened it was run by one firefighter. Now there are three firefighters with two apparatus, one engine and one bush engine. The engine has advance life support with an on board paramedic. The firefighters stationed at the Eucalyptus Hills station expressed they have enjoyed the community atmosphere of the Hills, but are looking forward to the new station with state of the art equipment. Sixty people attended the last open house at the Eucalyptus Hills Station where they were given a tour with firefighters explaining the inner workings of the two apparatus and how the station itself works. Fire paramedic Brian Moore showed the advance life support equipment to parents and children and explained how quickly help can be administered during an emergency.

The City of El Cajon’s Special Events Committee is currently coordinating a drive to collect items for Care packages that will be distributed to military members before the holidays. The theme is “They serve our country – let’s serve them!” City employees have expanded their collection efforts to the community. Items to donate include: new pairs of heavy duty socks, foot powder, baby/body wipes, deodorant, books and DVDs, toothpaste, toothbrush, toiletries, assorted snacks (sorry – no chocolates due to melting) hard candy, gum, sunflower seeds, corn nuts, etc. Monetary donations are also being sought to mail these care packages to military members serving overseas. Ghosts and goblins along with plenty of trick-or-treats will be evident during the upcoming Halloween weekend as the BLM launches another recreation season at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA). As visitors return from a summer off from dunes recreating, BLM officials are quick to emphasize key messages that ensure a safe visitor experience. “We look forward to the thousands of visitors having a fun safe season.” says BLM El Centro Field Manager Margaret Goodro. “The start of the season is a perfect time to remind folks to stay safe and have a great ride.” As part of the key messages and safety effort, the El Centro Field Office will add a new twist to its continuing education and outreach program by distributing thousands of brightly colored Frisbees sporting safety messages. These messages remind visitors of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, encourage visitors to wear seat belts/harnesses both on and off road, and to slow down to 15 mph within 50 feet of camps or people. These events are also opportunities to provide nutritious snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Below are tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.

• Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation.

Going trick-or-treating?

• Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. • Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. • Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

• Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. • Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.

• Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. • Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well. • Enter homes only if you’re

ake a moment and reflect how the past may be holding you back from enjoying today and being able to set goals for the future. In my practice I’m often asked about past life regression. This is a method that is done at the client’s request only. Let me explain why. Continuing to look back for reasons of current behavior only tends to keep a person stuck. Sometimes focusing on past experiences gives the person an excuse to stop moving forward. People often continue to blame their parents for bad parenting skills well into their adult life. Inspiration The illusive art of catching up Rev. James L. Snyder

I

s it just me, or do others have trouble catching up? Just when it looks like I am almost caught up with some project or my to-do-list, something happens setting me back a few paces. One step forward, as they say and for me 17 steps backward. Or, so it seems. I don’t have any problem whatsoever catching a cold. I once even caught a fly in my mouth while preaching, and it is as easy as New York style cheesecake to catch the dickens from the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. Catching up is another matter all together. Two things happened last week that brought this to my attention. First, I took someone out to lunch. That in itself is not outstanding. My wife tells me I am out to lunch all the time. Have you ever tried to impress someone by taking them out to lunch and insist on paying for lunch? That is exactly what I did this past week. Why I ever try to impress anyone is beyond my wife’s wildest imagination, but I try, much to her chagrin. With a couple of hours to

spare, my friend called me. Immediately I set into action a plan to meet him at the restaurant for lunch – on me. We had a grand time catching up on each other’s life. Personally, I was thrilled to Catch Up on something. Unfortunately, I thought I was on a roll with ham and cheese. It was delicious to enjoy this brief time if only for a moment, but all good things do end. Things were about to turn ugly. No, someone did not bring me a mirror. Instead, the affable waitress brought me the check. Normally, this would not be a problem. I would accept the check after some friendly banter with the waitress complaining about the amount and threatening not to tip her and she threatening to tell my wife. We all smiled and then it happened. I casually reached around to my back pocket to extract my wallet containing my credit card with which I would pay the check. My back pocket was as empty as a politician’s promises.

My friend was no different. He just looked at me and said, “OK, what’s wrong?” I may have trouble catching up but I have no trouble whatsoever being caught with my pants down. Well, maybe not quite down but certainly empty. Nothing is sadder than a man wearing empty trousers. “Did you forget your wallet?” my friend asked with delight dancing in his eyes. He happily paid the tab but I will never live it down. The second incident also had to do with my wallet. Although this time, I did not forget my wallet. I had an early morning meeting across town. I knew my car was running on fumes but no need to worry. I left the house early enough to stop and gas up.

At first, a slight streak of panic raced through my person causing me to freeze in petrifying fear. My first thought, I had someone else’s trousers on. But whose? More important, where was the man wearing my trousers?

Pulling out of my driveway, I noticed the gas gauge was lower than I remembered it being the night before. A tinge of terror gripped my mind and I earnestly prayed I would get to the gas station on time.

I smiled one of those smiles that says, “Oops, I’m in trouble but I don’t want anyone to know.”

I sighed with relief as I approached a gas station. The station had just opened and the sign on the pump informed me I needed to pay for the gas before pumping it.

My friend sensed something was wrong; friends are like that. Looking at me he said, “Is anything wrong?” Being the truthful person I

No problem. I ambled in, presented my credit card and purchased $20 worth of gas.

There is a good feeling associated with a schedule well in hand. I glanced at my watch and noticed I was two minutes ahead of schedule. With a whistle on my lips and air between my ears, I got into my car and drove away. Two miles later, I glance at the gas gauge and noticed it had not moved. I tapped the gauge and nothing happened. At that time, the car sputtered and coughed ominously. Then, like a bolt of lightening, it struck me. I had paid for the gas and drove away without pumping it into my car. By this time, the car engine stopped and I had just enough momentum to pull to the side of the road. I sat there a few minutes pondering my dilemma. I knew what I had to do but I did not want to do it. Slowly, I picked up my cell phone and dialed the dreaded number. The phone rang and in a moment, I heard myself speaking into the phone, “Honey, can you…” Waiting for my wife to bring a can of gas I thought of a verse of scripture. “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (James 4:17 KJV). Volunteers working to collect 8,100 gifts for needy kids this Christmas W

hile many El Cajon families are busy with holiday activities, a group of local volunteers is focused on filling empty shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, hygiene items and notes of encouragement for needy kids overseas. El Cajon families are participating in the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind—Operation Christmas Child—an effort that has hand-delivered 86 million gifts to kids worldwide since 1993. This year-round project of Samaritan’s Purse is coming to its peak, as local businesses, churches and schools prepare to collect gift-filled shoe boxes during National Collection Week, Nov. 14-21. Volunteers can drop off their shoe box gifts at one of three bustling locations in the area to help kids in 100 countries know they are loved and not forgotten. Full of action, adventure and the ever popular ticking clock, Niccol provokes an even more intriguing world in the future where no one ages past 25. That would be great if it wasn’t also a world where everything is run by hours and minutes, including how long someone might live. The rich can buy time from the bank, but the poor are left to barter or steal.

One day Will does not meet his quota at work, so he receives no time. He realizes he must find his mother quickly since she gave him her time when he left for work and was supposed to give it back. While frantically looking for time, Will aids Henry (Matt Bomer), a rich man, from a gang who’s looking to steal time. Henry – now 105 – has tired of this world, so as he and Will hide out and sleep, he downloads a century of time to Will. With only minutes left, Henry falls off a bridge and dies.

Anyone who questions if Timberlake could take on a role that at one time would have gone to Bruce Willis need not worry. Every minute he’s on screen here, Timberlake appears exciting and believable as Will.

The Academy Award-nominated Gattaca (1997), which he wrote, was also his first directing debut and a favorite of sci-fi fans. The offbeat The Truman Show (1998), starring Jim Carrey and written and produced by Niccol, received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Screenplay. With In Time, Niccol taps into one of the world’s biggest obsessions – remaining young.

Director Niccol thought Timberlake was just right for the role. “I love Justin’s work ethic, which is one of the important traits he shares with his character, Will Salas,” Niccol said. “I don’t think Justin himself has taken a day off since he was 12 years old.  There is no reason he won’t be a successful ac-

he mere idea that the work of William Shakespeare is not really his own writing is almost scandalous. Not to mention attacking someone’s validity 395 years after his death. But maybe there is right to question this as he was the son of an illiterate tradesman who had only a village school education. Even his death in 1616 was met with silence, and his illiterate wife and children were bequeathed only his “second best bed” – no money – and even more shockingly, his will mentions no books or manuscripts of any kind. Could he

have authored literary masterpieces such as The Merchant of Venice, King Lear, and Henry V? That’s the premise behind Director Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous. The film begins as a man (Derek Jacobi) lumbers into a theatre in modern time in New York to deliver the prologue and epilogue of a play titled Anonymous. He announces that Shakespeare did not leave a single manuscript when he passed and that the real writer of those works was Edward de Vere, seventeenth Earl of Oxford. Transition to early England

where The Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans) has penned marvelous plays and poems written in brilliant dialogue, but who does not want anyone to know he is the author. So he sends them to the theatre by Ben Jonson (Sebastian Armesto), another playwright. The narrator of the plays, a Globe actor by the name of Will Shakespeare (Rafe Spall), reads the plays and since no other name is attached, and they draw great favor from the queen, professes that he wrote them. Eventually politics raises its head and someone wants those plays. Will is questioned, even beat and tortured by the Queen’s royal guard to confess where they are hidden. He maintains they were burned in the fire. But were they? From here on screenwriter John Orloff (A Mighty Heart) delivers a beautiful visual of a story, however it often had me lost with the back flashes away from the Elizabethan time period to the past and trying to keep up with who is king and who is bedding the queen. From one castle to another, from loving someone then condemning them to die, Anonymous is filled with intrigue, danger, double cross-

ings and death – to some by a mere command. The cast, which often must have two performers for the old and younger characters, is fabulous. Seasoned film veteran Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson play the younger and older Queen Elizabeth. While Ifans is polished and distinguished as the elder Earl, Jamie Campbell Bower possesses the sexual charm as the younger Earl to entice his way

into the queen’s bed. Spall is excellent as the rascally actor who takes on the identity of the Duke’s work. Although the film never answers the question it presents, my interest was always kept alive by Anna J. Foerster’s wonderful direction of photography and Lisy Christl’s majestic costumes. These elements along with fine performances made the movie enjoyable, but I was still confused about the characters and their stories.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING PROPOSED SEWER SERVICE RATE INCREASE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that at 7:00_p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, the El Cajon City Council will hold a public hearing in the City Council Chambers located at 200 Civic Center Way, El Cajon, CA to consider: Proposed Five-Year Sewer Service Rate Increase The rate adjustment is required to ensure the current level of maintenance of the sewer system and to protect the environment. This rate adjustment is the first in El Cajon since 1999. The City is part of the San Diego Metro Sewer System, and is legally required to generate sufficient revenue from sewer service charges to fully fund its sewer program. Revenues derived from sewer fees are used solely for costs and expenses related to operating the City’s wastewater utility. If approved, the first increase in sewer rates would take effect beginning with bills mailed on or after January 1, 2012. Additional sewer rate adjustments would take effect on July 1 of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. A table reflecting the proposed rate increases is available for review at the City Clerk’s office during regular business hours. Written protests may be submitted to the Office of the City Clerk of the City of El Cajon by 5:30 p.m. on November 8, 2011 or in the City Council Chambers during the public hearing so long as they are received prior to the close of the public hearing. W

hen I think of a car as a work horse I think of Camry and Ford Taurus for the domestic side. Don’t take this negatively; in fact it’s just the opposite. Drivers are hard on their cars and these two models have been stellar for the last 20 years of burning up the road. Fast forward to today. Anyone who needs a five-pas-

senger 4-door sedan should add the new Camry to the list. It’s been awhile since I tested a Camry. Although it’s an excellent car, I never had much new to talk about even with the car’s reliability. Toyota has spruced up its workhorse, and the XLE is the perfect choice. My tester came with the 3.5-Liter V6 DOHC 24-Valve Dual VVT-I producing 268 hp @ 6200 rpm and torque

of 248 lb-ft @ 4700 rpm. Or another choice is the more efficient engine package that’s a 2.5-Liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-Valve Dual VVT-i producing 178 hp @ 6000 rpm and torque of 170 lb.-ft. @ 4100 rpm. The V6 averages fuel mileage of 21 MPG city, 30 freeway and a combined mileage of 25. However, opt for the 4-cylinder and expect 25 city, 35 freeway and combined mileage of 28. I did my own mileage run and I averaged a combined 29.8 MPG burning Chevron regular gas. So it’s a matter of choice. Another improvement in the Camry lineup is attention to detail. The stitched leather, wood grain treatment, comfortable seating also includes great features for a family car such as navigation, back up camera and 10 air bags. Yes 10! Driving the 2012 Camry is a pure joy. It handles the mountain roads with ease or just going to the grocery store it’s a fine ride. Need storage?

No problem. The Camry has 15.4 cubic feet of trunk storage space along with features such as Projector-beam halogen headlamps with auto on/off feature, integrated fog lamps, a sport front mesh grille, integrated front and rear underbody spoilers and sport side rocker panels. There’s more – powered color-keyed heated outside mirrors, a power tilt/ slide moon roof with one-touch open/close with jam protection, driver and front passenger illuminated vanity mirrors, and rear-seat reading lamps. The washer-linked intermittent windshield wipers and rear window defogger with timer High Solar Energy-Absorbing (HSEA) glass are a few features worth looking at. The 4-cylinder Camry bases as little as $21,995, plus tax, license and freight. My tester came in around $30,000, but owners can pick from the L, LE, XLE, Hybrid LE and Hybrid XLE. ast Sunday at Met Life Stadium, formerly known as the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., the New York Jets rallied from an 11 point halftime deficit to defeat the Chargers 27-21. With the win the Jets improved their record to (43), while the Bolts dropped to (4-2).   “We are extremely disappointed,” said Chargers head coach Norv Turner. “We came in here and thought we were well prepared. We had a lot of energy early. We made plays in the first half that gave us a chance to win. And obviously, we made some plays in the second half that kept us from winning.” This was a game of two halves. On the road the Bolts quieted the crowd in the first half by overpowering

the Jets dominating the line of scrimmage. This caused two turnovers created by the defense. Getting off to a fast start, the Chargers got out to an early 7-0 first quarter lead, thanks to linebacker Donald Butler’s strip and 37-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. Bolts free safety Eric Weddle promptly intercepted Mark Sanchez pass in the end zone halting a New York touchdown- scoring drive in the first quarter. Score after quarter one, San Diego Chargers 7 - New York Jets 3.

After a Mike Tolbert oneyard touchdown run near the end of the second quarter with the Chargers winning 21-10, it was all New York with help from San Diego. The Chargers committed 13 penalties totaling 95-yards.

Second quarter action saw Chargers All Pro tight end Antonio Gates catch his first touchdown pass of the season. A favorite target of quarterback Philip Rivers, Gates – although not 100 percent – reminded us how valuable he is to the Chargers offense, especially in red zone scoring situations.

Number 17, Plexico Burress receiver for the Jets, had a stellar performance tying a careerhigh three touchdown reception. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had one of his worst performances as a pro. He completed 50 percent of his passes 16-of-32, 179 yards, one touchdown to Gates and had two horrible interceptions.

Although the Jets scored two touchdowns and a field goal in the second half of play the Chargers were still in a position to win it with a minute to play. That hope ended when Philip Rivers threw the ball erratically and the Chargers offense managed the clock poorly.

Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez had similar numbers completing 18-of-33, 173 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. For the second consecutive week the Chargers defense gave up a 100-yard rusher. This time it was to New York Jets runner Shonn Greene who rampantly ran for 112-yards, on 20 carries.

This was a painful loss for the Chargers leaving their fans pessimistic. Closing comments from an optimistic Chargers head coach Turner were, “We are going to be a very good team. It hurts to lose this football game, but we’re going to grow and get better from it.” Last year’s AFC West champions, the Kansas City Chiefs host the San Diego Chargers under the national spotlight of Monday Night Football at 5:30 p.m.
