MIM & MIM-I ACADEMIC MENTORING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2014-2015 mim.wustl.edu

Mentors in Medicine Provides Internal Medicine residents at Washington University with a comprehensive and structured career development program and mentoring relationships in all phases of their training. All interns are paired with faculty and upper level residents based on common interests. This allows the participants to closely interact with faculty to facilitate long-term career development. Upper level residents assist interns with integration and adaptation to the rigors of residency in the initial months of training. For those interested in a research project, faculty mentors provide research mentorship.

Mentors in Medicine International This program allows residents interested in global health research to conduct a research project in another country. Research projects are coordinated by the residents with assistance from Washington University faculty and international mentors.

Career Mentors Career mentors serve as advocate and advisor for the mentee. They offer support and help establish goals and develop a plan to help the resident succeed in their chosen career path. 

Mentors and mentees are encouraged to set three to four appointments during the course of the academic year to discuss goals and career plans and to develop a long-term relationship.

The career mentor is expected to help expand the professional network for the mentee, suggest and provide resources, and foster the understanding of the academic, political and social environment at Washington University.

The mentee should be willing to seek advice when needed and have realistic expectations of the mentor’s time.

The rewards of mentorship are mutually beneficial: Mentors have the opportunity to share and observe their mentee’s growth in all dimensions and to feel the pride and satisfaction that comes as their career flourishes. The mentees will benefit through the personal and individualized interactions with their career mentor.

Resident Mentors Informal mentorship of interns by upper-level residents is an integral part of the program. The primary role of resident mentors is to help the intern make a successful transition into residency training. Resident mentors will offer both professional and social support to the new interns particularly through the first year of their training. Long-term professional relationships frequently develop.

Research Mentorship The program supports and encourages the pursuit of academic careers in the areas of basic, translational, clinical research, medical education, quality improvement, health policy and others. The program accomplishes these goals by: 

Providing research support through a competitive grant application program that fosters the development of critical thinking, grant writing skills and a mentored research experience.

Providing exposure to successful faculty mentors and academic role models at Washington University and elsewhere.

Encouraging mutually-beneficial research collaborations within and beyond the university community.

Mentees will have opportunities for formal research presentations.

Steps to Submitting a Successful Application: 

Identify an appropriate research mentor.

Identify an important research question and formulate an appropriate hypothesis.

Provide specific background information and significance of the question to be addressed.

Outline the project design, intervention (if any) and outcome measures.

Describe the approach that will be taken to analyze the data.

Provide a reasonable budget request.
