CEO’s Message

Dear Residents Dear residents, welcome to our December / January Newsletter. I hope you find it interesting and informative. I have been fortunate to spend quite a deal of time in the village lately, with the new Community Centre, the changes to the electricity network and management changes all reaching a crescendo of activity. It’s been quite invigorating to meet new residents, to see the more regular patrons of the Community Centre, and to introduce our village to people who wish to join us. As an added benefit, it’s also allowed me to interact more closely with our staff in our village and enable them find ways to perform even better in their roles. The recent month was a period of some upheaval with the retirement of our Village Manager Mr. Helmut Winzler. Helmut provided fine management of the village since 2005, overseeing some tremendous initiatives such as the emergency evacuation policy and repeated advocacy to Council on behalf of residents for a concessionary level of rates. A quality I most appreciated within Helmut was his ability to be calm, measured and empathetic in times of emergency or when facing distressing situations, which was a great benefit to many residents and their families. Aside from these exceptional initiatives and qualities, Helmut’s day-to-day management was always reliable with an unquestionable ethic and predictability of stridently endeavouring to look after residents’ best interests. Helmut did not want a send off, or a prolonged farewell, however please be assured Helmut has moved into retirement with our sincere thanks and the very best support. In order to find the next Village Manager we have sought the assistance from a Human Resources consultancy to search for the best possible candidate for the role. This may take several months. In the meantime, we will continue operations at the Village with a relieving Manager, Mr. Ashleigh Millar. Ashleigh and his wife Marlene have previously been full time Village Managers but more recently operate as relieving Managers, so Ashleigh comes to this temporary role with a good deal of insight into Village life. Finally on the topic of management change, I’d like to make note of a warm thanks to Debbie who has shouldered a large part of the day-to-day responsibilities during this time, and is looking forward to having a new colleague with her in the office. Community Centre Construction of the Community Centre is now drawing to an end, and arrangements are in place to start using the building from 1 February 2015. The building is looking magnificent and I have been pleased to show residents and guests through the site whenever possible. When viewing the building, you may be interested to know that we wanted the building to the impressive, to have a presence and a sense of “wow” when you first see it and walk through the front door, reflective of the central and commanding aspect of the site. However we did not want to merely create a postcard or photographic opportunity, but to create a building that has quality infrastructure that can be worked hard to accommodate your needs. I think we are going to meet all those aspirations. I hope that, when it’s completed, you can be proud of this addition to your village and that you will enjoy and exploit the facility to enrich your lives. Coinciding with the opening, for the month of February onwards, we will revert to the regular rate of service fees of $296.80 per month.

Electricity Network We have made good progress on switching to an embedded electricity network, albeit later than originally planned. Unfortunately delays arising from the processes of the distribution network have pushed back our planned 28 November changeover date, and we are now trying to re-organise a suitable date to make the change. We will write separately to each property to confirm the date at the first opportunity. Those residents who accepted the offer of the new pricing will be pleased to know that many residents have asked the comparative costs to be calculated, and we are yet to see anyone who would not realise a meaningful savings from the exercise. Finally, I would like to extend warm wishes for Christmas to you and your families . May the New Year be a positive and healthy one for all.

Kind regards Geoff Reeve

Managers Message FROM MY DESK Hello, my name is Ashleigh Millar. Geoff has appointed me to manage the village for a short season whilst he finds the best person available to be your Village Manager. My role is to ensure that our village continues its high level of service and the well established culture of generosity, respect and fun. When Geoff appointed me to this role I had to say that I could not be here during the week beginning 1 December. The reason for this was that my wife Marlene and I have booked a holiday in the city that week to celebrate forty-two years of marriage. For many of those forty two years we made our home in the Wimmera region of Victoria, where we raised three children. We now have five grandchildren which comes with a name change – our names are now Pop and Nana. As many of you will acknowledge from your own experience, our grandchildren are high on our list and love to spend quality time with them. Marlene’s interests also run to dresses (not on my list), making sure there are always flowers prominently displayed in the house, visiting and having visitors. I love the latter, in which fine wines and foods are shared, and we both are in our element giving and receiving hospitality, and helping out at church. We also have thoroughly enjoyed our numerous trips to France over the past ten years. I am already enjoying working with Debbie who has taken a large load here at the office. I’m loving hearing the thanks and expressions of appreciation that come pretty constantly through her desk. Debbie is currently trying to finish revising the list of Safety Wardens, so that this important function is in place for your security. Debbie is also busy with a variety of tasks that she will communicate to you in her report. One of my tasks is to help Geoff with upgrading our street lighting. No, I’m not going to be playing with electricity, but will be completing the task of obtaining aesthetic and economical poles that will give better illumination than what we currently have. This is the kind of job I’ll be working on your behalf until a manager is appointed. There are thirteen new households settling up in our village soon, so we’re filling up. From what I’ve seen in my short watch here these new residents will be feeling very welcome, and doubly so when our magnificent Community Centre is rolled out. Did you hear about the man who fell through the flywire door and strained himself? Thanks for the exceptionally warm welcome. God bless.

Ashleigh Millar

Dear Residents Whether you are a cricket fan or not, you would have to have been saddened by the passing of Phil Hughes. A young-25-year-old man with his life still yet to live. A pure fluke, accident, mishap, call it what you will, just goes to show none of us know what each minute in each day will present us with. Thoughts go to his family, friends and team mates, and your heart must go out to cricketers as life can never be quite the same again. For us here, at Tudor Village the year came and went in the blink of an eye and so much has happened. We farewelled one or two of our own friends and will remember them with fondness and love. We also welcomed many new faces and hope that they, as those before them, live every day to the fullest, laugh much, sing loud and dance until their feet hurt. Morning teas, afternoon teas and Happy Hour suppers a plenty. You took part in a lot of retail therapy with many and varied clothing companies paying us a visit. Many of you visited a few interesting places by hiring a coach or two and made good use of the Village bus including Coombe Cottage with its spectacular grounds and enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Caravans came and went out of the parking bays as many sought warmer pastures during our cold, cold winter. Cruises a plenty and holidays to remember - even I enjoyed a magnificent getaway, one I will treasure always. Our regular activities continued in our temporary community centre with many group numbers increasing, despite the challenge of a smaller albeit temporary space. While you busied yourselves each week, enjoying the company of friends, we watched with anticipation as the new community centre grew from the ground up evolving into a bigger and better facility than we had ever imagined - it is so close to completion, we can almost taste it! In a way I will miss the old centre although it did present its challenges for both staff and residents. The New Year will bring a new building, a new beginning and without doubt a freshness of positivity and energy - you can feel the rumbling and anticipation building; getting ready to burst. The New Year will begin a new chapter in the history of Tudor Village. We will have a new community centre but it’s you, the residents, who make this community the fabulous place it is - your individuality, the diverse characters, people from all walks of life and of all ages have created a lifestyle within Tudor that would be envied by many. I would like to take this opportunity thank everyone for their patience, kindness and support during 2014. I wish you a wonderful Christmas and hope you spend time with loved ones. To all those who have sent in jokes, poems, personal stories and old photographs (the photos have created so much interest) for the Village news: thank you and keep them coming. And finally we have also said farewell to one or two staff members and welcomed new and it is to them, but especially to the team that are still part of the Tudor family, I extend a big thank you. You have been a constant source of support to me - may your Christmas be a wonderful time spent with friends and family.

Merry Christmas

Deb

Many hands make light work - even Geoff, the CEO, is happy to lend a hand when there is work to be done. Lucky we caught it on camera!!

The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen -- Funny Christmas Carols -(To the Tune “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”)

The restroom door said Gentlemen So I just walked inside I took two steps and realized I'd been taken for a ride I heard high voices turned and found The place was occupied By two nuns, three old ladies, and a nurse What could be worse? Than two nuns, three old ladies and a nurse. The restroom door said Gentlemen It must have been a gag As soon as I walked in there I ran into some old hag She sprayed me with a can of mace And snapped me with her bag. I could tell this just wouldn't be my day What can I say? It just wasn't turning out to be my day. The restroom door said Gentlemen And I would like to find The crummy little creep who had the nerve to switch the sign Cause I've got two black eyes And one high heel up my behind Now I can't sit with comfort and joy Boy, oh, boy No, I'll never sit with comfort and joy.

HAPPY HOUR Friday Evenings 5.00pm Happy Hour finished October on a high note with a Halloween Party and a free Melbourne Cup Sweep. The costumes were more fanciful than ever with most of those attending getting into the spirit (or spirits) of the occasion. Unfortunately I didn’t take note of the prize winners but I can assure you that they were suitably horrible. It was a near capacity crowd with a lot of laughs all through the evening. November was generally a normal month with only a lucky spot until the final night. Attendances were very good, pointing out that the new centre will be put to good use immediately. There will be, of necessity, some changes to the Happy Hour format. While a few of these are being discussed with management suggestions from residents will be most welcome. It is a very important weekly social function run for the enjoyment of all residents. A Pizza Party Night was November’s final function with pizza and cream cake for everyone. This is always a popular event and there was a capacity crowd on hand. Just a word of thanks to Bubba Pizza who delivered on time and gave us a good deal on the pizzas. We encourage you to support the traders who support the Village. The big event for December is, of course, the Christmas Party on the 19th. If you haven’t as yet put your name on Farther Christmas’s list please do so at the next Happy Hour. It promises to be a great night so don’t miss it. Plans are yet to be finalized for Happy Hour in January but it would appear that it will go on in a similar way to last year’s mini happy hour. More about that later. Ernie Hicks on behalf of the Committee

In February 2015 I will be arranging breast screening for residents of Tudor. It will be on Monday 9th February and be held at Lilydale, starting at 9am. We will be using the Village bus to transport those residents who are unable to drive. DID YOU KNOW 50% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are aged 50-74. This is the reason why a breast screening mammogram once every two years is primarily recommended for women in this age group. However, women aged 74 and over are still at risk of breast cancer. If you are over 74, you are outside the BreastScreen program’s target age range for screening (50-74) and therefore won’t receive letters from BreastScreen Victoria but you are still welcome to have a free breast screening mammogram with us every two years. Our New Community Centre First there was the empty space When we moved into Tudor The Village looked magnificent Tho wondered if we ought a Promises, promises, promises re this slice of empty land Lots of talk about it Found it hard to understand Then lo’n’behold, before our eyes Movement on the ground Witnessed from our doorway There’s equipment moving round And workmen day after day Then slow realization Lordy, our Centre is on its way! Lots of thoughts among us Just maybe we can plan Dare we think this Christmas? Of course; we surely can! Let’s put all our energies And concentrate on schemes Plan a special Christmas there Which we thought just a dream There’s been no one among us Who’d thought of such GRANDEUR Let’s wish us all good health And ability to make it Thru That very special door! Sadly a ‘PS’ is needed When plans go away Seems the guns been jumped As our ‘open day’ plans pass us by Those doors just won’t be opened But none of us should cry We oldies have much patience All from family raisin’ – gone by Tis but a little hiccup We will soon be giving cheers As we walk through those doors And give a loud three cheers.

A special and fitting contribution from Lillian Valintine Thanks Lillian—especially for the ‘PS’
