Christmas

Wishing You A Blessed Christmas! Along with some of the usual information we provide each week (mass intentions, events, etc. which are found on page 6) we offer you three special pages about Christmas to enhance your celebration and to add to your knowledge of this feast of faith. Read on and enjoy!

God, Loving Giver of all we have today, we celebrate the gift of your Son to us. As we share these tokens of our love for each other, help us to be mindful of your goodness to us in sharing Jesus with us. He has shown us how to love. Keep us aware that our greatest gift to anyone is a heart full of joy and compassion. Make us grateful for what we receive. Amen.

Did you know…? It has been said that the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written to help Catholics learn and keep their faith in a time of persecution. Read and see what you think at: http://www.cresourcei.org/cy12days.html

A Child’s Christmas in America.

We take for granted many of the customs that surround Christmas in the United States. As you will see below, Christmas is celebrated differently in other countries. Let me share with you a few personal memories of Christmas as a child. In our home a lighted Christmas crib was always set up with care and I delighted in each of the figurines, especially the baby Jesus who arrived on schedule every year. Orange lights would appear in the windows but only as we got closer to the Big Day. Artificial trees didn’t exist yet so we scoured the lots looking for one that would fit our house and our budget. 3

Christmas

Decorating it was an art. Midnight mass was not to be missed, a very solemn event and quite special because as children my siblings and I never stayed up that late. After Mass we went straight to bed to hear once again every child’s favorite poem, “Twas The Night Before Christmas.” Then, nestled under the covers we restlessly awaited the sound of a bell. The bell meant Santa Claus had come, left his treasures, and was on his way to the next house. Within a split second we were out of bed and into the living room. Gifts overflowed under the Christmas tree and there was a mad scramble to find the ones with my name on them. When the last package was opened and the living room floor was a sea of wrapping paper we went for the Christmas stockings in search of curious little trinkets and usually a big orange. There was a threat that we would find coal if we hadn’t behaved, but surprisingly no coal ever appeared. When exhaustion finally set in we retreated to our beds and slept well into the morning, unless I had to serve a morning mass. On Christmas day dinner was made elegant with china dinnerware and crystal goblets. Before plunging into the platters, a simple prayer was said by us all. In its own special way Christmas was a well orchestrated ritual. Today, when I visit my family I smile when I see how many elements of that childhood rite have survived. Perhaps it is true: “the more things change, the more they remain the same.” Hopefully, the things that remain the same are the important ones. Memory will have to serve to keep the rest. Fr. John

A DOMINICAN CHRISTMAS.

Many of our Hispanic brothers and sisters at Saint John’s come from Dominican Republic, an island in the Caribbean shared with the country of Haiti. Here are a few ways that people in the “DR” observe Christmas. In the city of Santiago, in the center of the island, Christmas begin officially with the installation of an enormous representation of the Nativity at the National monument. In heavily populated parts of the city the streets are decorated with lights and garlands, and at the end of the Christmas season the city council awards the best and most visited display. Another characteristic activity are the “mañanitas” or “aguinaldos.” These are surprise parties (for the host). There are some during Christmas night when family members and friends exchange gifts or little angels. And of course in the midst of these festivals, lights and so on, most important of all is Christmas Eve, known in Spanish as La Noche Buena or the “Best Night” which begins with attending Holy Mass. All of the churches are packed full of faithful parishioners united solemnly by their faith. After that, we have the traditional dinner wtih roasted pig roasted (or turkey), pastelones (potatoes baked with beef and cheese), pasteles de hoja (like tamales), apples and the traditional Christmas candies, liquors of different kinds, teleras, and ginger tea. For the children of Cibao this is the night of their dreams, because Baby Jesus brings them toys to play with and enjoy on Christmas day. For the Dominicans, Christmas is the feast which brings together our happiness, our faith, our love and our hope in better times. Feliz Navidad!

Please remember in your prayers the repose of the soul of Eileen Cullen and Josephine Tierney whose funerals were celebrated in our parish. May they and all the faithful departed rest in the peace of Our Lord Jesus.

Memorial Gifts for the Eucharist This weekend the gifts of the bread and wine are given in memory of Mary and Horace Dabrieo from their loving family. If you wish to make a memorial gift of bread and wine or sacramental candles, you can call Betty at the parish center.

As we celebrate this holy season we pray with hopeful hearts that we are able to see the face of Christ in all we meet. During this week take time to look deeply into the smile of another, to listen intently when someone speaks, and to offer your hand to a person in need.

Thanks! Gracias! Merci! 9
