It has two terminals: Terminal 1 services low-cost airlines; Terminal 2 is divided between Terminal 2A (the departure and arrival point for flights of Malév Hungarian Airlines) and Terminal 2B (hosting all international carriers’ flights, including some of the budget airlines). Fly Balaton Airport, located in Sármellék at the western shore of Lake Balaton, meets the international airport rules of the EU and allows international border crossing, operates all year round and receives scheduled and charter flights, as well as small planes. www.fly-balaton.com Airport Debrecen meets EU standards and international requirements and is completely equipped to handle both civilian and commercial traffic on a regular basis. It is situated 2.5 km from the centre of Debrecen and thanks to the highly developed road and rail connections, the airport can serve as an intermediary logistics centre. www.airportdebrecen.hu Gyôr-Pér Airport is located 15 km from the centre of Hungary’s fastest-developing region (West-Danubia), from Gyôr. The airport handles charter flights, air taxi and sightseeing flights. www.gyor-perairport.hu Pécs-Pogány Airport is located approximately 210 km from Budapest and can be reached within ten minutes (10 km) from downtown Pécs. The aerial border crossing is open to international air traffic; there are border guards here. Industry Organisations Tourism Office of Budapest The official company representing tourism in Budapest is responsible for marketing activity, concentrating primarily on promotion of the city abroad. The official website – www.budapestinfo.hu – is the first online stop for potential visitors to Hungary. It contains commonly requested practical information, including details of hotels, restaurants, general ‘facts and figures’ (currency, weather, population, etc), press pages, sightseeing highlights, and much more. The information is available in 17 languages and there is an events calendar in six languages. In addition, the office provides an important information network for visitors in the city. There are six Tourinform offices – found in the city centre, on Castle Hill and at the airport. Several official (and free) publications are printed annually. The Budapest Guide, for instance, is a comprehensive and useful booklet; such publications are distributed to all hotels, tour operators, local and countrywide Tourinform offices and other tourism-related sights. They can also be downloaded from the website. Another product offered by the Tourism Office of Budapest is the Budapest Card, a discount card offering reduced prices on sights, tours, restaurants and baths, as well as free travel on public transport. HUNGARIAN INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES If you pick up the telephone and answer “hallo”, then you’re using a Hungarian word. Tivadar Puskás, the inventor of the first telephone exchange, was Hungarian. When testing his new invention, he excitedly shouted “Hallod?” – “Can you hear me?” in Hungarian – into the mouthpiece. This expression was then adopted by telephone exchanges around the world! There are clues to the origins of a familiar form of transportation in the Hungarian word “kocsi”. The English word “coach” and German word “Kutsche” derive from this. Coaches were first made in the Hungarian village of Kocs in medieval times, and the village gives its name to the Hungarian term. Ernô Rubik was creator of the “magic” Rubik Cube, voted the toy of the year in 1981; so popular was the puzzle that a world championship was organised for devotees.

The ball-point pen was invented by László József Bíró, who drew on his knowledge of printing presses to devise a writing implement that didn’t leak. János Neumann invented the computer. Albert Szentgyörgyi extracted Vitamin C from paprika (Hungarian red pepper) in 1930. Further Hungarian discoveries and inventions include the hologram, the dynamo, the safety match and the helicopter. HISTORICAL BUILDINGS Matthias Church didn’t enjoy the best of days during World War II. Not only was it rammed by tanks, but it was used in turn as a field kitchen by German soldiers and a stable by the Soviets. The beautiful Chain Bridge bears a resemblance to England’s Hammersmith Bridge. Not surprising really because the British engineer William Thierry Clark was responsible for designing both of them. There was a British hand in the construction too, which was overseen by Scotsman Adam Clark. The strategic importance of Buda Castle means that it has been at the centre of many struggles over the years, and has suffered numerous sieges – indeed, it has changed hands over 30 times. The neo-Gothic Parliament building was modelled on England’s Houses of Parliament, and contains 40 million bricks. NATURAL WONDERS Lake Balaton is the largest lake in central Europe – 77 km long but just 1.5 km wide at its narrowest point. Lake Hévíz is the second-largest thermal lake in the world, and bathers can enjoy a warming wallow at any time of the year – even in deepest winter. In autumn 100,000 cranes alight to feed on the Great Plain during their spectacular migration – a must-see for bird lovers.

Fashion A Haunting Show Past During those dark days behind the Iron Curtain, enormous statues dominated the streets and squares of eastern Europe. They were instruments of power, hated symbols of red repression, and most were ripped apart and melted down after the fall of communism in the 1990s. However, the Hungarians were more canny. Instead of destroying the monuments, they moved them to Statue Park – an outdoor museum on the outskirts of Budapest. Go way back to Hollókô

You will find a healthy slice of yesteryear at Hollókô. This little village of just 400 people – tucked in a valley 100 km from Budapest and surrounded by forested hills – is caught in time, living the life and preserving the folk traditions of a bygone era. The villagers speak with the Palóc peasant dialect and often wear vivid, homemade Palóc costumes; their houses have wooden verandas and contain three rooms, just as they have since the 17th century. So valuable is this breathing piece of history that the village – with its hilltop castle and 67 buildings – has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. You will be greeted at delicious scones served hot from the oven, before enjoying a performance by local singers in traditional dress. A lady in your group will even have the chance to try on one of the peasant costumes, comprising up to ten layers of skirts!

After passing beneath a mighty portcullis into the town’s castle, you will climb 130 steps to the top of the 13th-century tower and its breathtaking views over the Danube Bend. It was a Hungarian who first succeeded in riding five horses at once, a remarkable feat that became known as the ‘Puszta Five‘. The world-champion coachdriving Lázár brothers run the Lázár Equestrian Park. After being welcomed to the park with a fresh scone and a fruit brandy, settle back for a show like no other you will have seen; riders attempt death-defying acts of daring by jumping through fire, and horses perform fascinating tricks such as lying down or sitting on command. After that, the group can ride some of the horses themselves and take a carriage trip through the surrounding forests before enjoying one of several programmes on offer. Gödöllô Palace ranks among the best-preserved and most notorious aristocratic houses in Hungary. It was a favourite spot of Queen Elizabeth, the pretty wife of Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph. Today, every nook and cranny of the palace preserves the queen’s memory. It has been carefully restored to its original glory, and the surrounding 26-acre park and elegant Grand Hall can be rented for private concerts or gala dinners. Why not make the event extra special by arranging for guests to arrive at the palace aboard an early-20th-century steam locomotive borrowed from Budapest’s Railway Heritage Park? Then take the coach a short distance to the Budavár Funicular Railway, which rattles its way up the steep hillside to the Castle District. There you and your group can participate in a teambuilding game during which you will be tested with a series of tasks as you navigate yourselves around the district’s cobbled streets. Round the day off with dinner in the heart of the city aboard a 75 m-long docked boat!

Day 2 The day starts with a trip to Gödöllô, and a stroll around the town’s royal palace, which is one of the largest and best-preserved Baroque mansions in Hungary. What more sumptuous and elegant setting for a cup of tea and a piece of cake? An absolute must at some point during the programme is some entertainment that properly reflects Hungary’s equestrian tradition. The original ancestral tribes arrived here on horse back, and a love of horses runs very deep. You will have the chance to watch an incredible horse show, take a ride in a coach and guzzle a tempting lunch at the Lázár Equestrian Park. On returning to Budapest, take in a concert (modern or classical) at the fabulous Palace of Arts, and then continue the musical theme at the truly intriguing Belcanto – a restaurant where the waiters sing snatches of opera! Day 3 There is a great deal to look forward to on Day 3. Once There is a great deal to look forward to on Day 3. Once breakfast is finished, take a drive to Szentendre on the beautiful Danube Bend. This scenic little town

oozes Mediterranean charm, and is famous as a centre for culture and arts, with museums aplenty and some gorgeous Baroque churches. Not only will you enjoy some sightseeing, but there will also be the opportunity to do a spot of shopping. Move on with a tour through the Pilis to Visegrád, once the residence of Hungarian royalty. There you will enjoy a royal feast in the Renaissance Restaurant. The dishes are based on genuine medieval recipes, and are served on special earthenware plates by waiters in period costume to the accompaniment of lute music. After the meal you will take part in a real knights’ tournament in the town’s lower castle. The day’s crowning glory is a magnificent black-tie gala dinner in the Metropolitan Szabó Ervin Library (the one-time Wenckheim Palace), rented out specially for your event. The lavish evening promises an elegant ambience, superb cuisine and relaxing classical music. Day 4 Having gathered a treasure trove of memories, leave for the journey home – promising to return soon for a holiday with your family and friends!
