3 FACES OF BOGART

A Successful Campaign! A tremendous thank you to everyone who participated, donated, produced, attended, chaired and committee’d Fort Arbor Acres’ Operation CARmed Forces. Did anyone star in more classics than Humphrey Bogart? Starting in gangster roles, then becoming an unlikely romantic lead, Bogart was one of Hollywood’s iconic leading men from the 1930s until his untimely death in 1957. Three of his best films, all in High Definition, are on October’s schedule of Friday Night at the Movies with Jim Shertzer in Fellowship Hall. Among his leading ladies were Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Jennifer Jones and, of course, Lauren Bacall – whom he met when she was 19 while filming “To Have and Have Not” and soon married. “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” and “The African Queen” – both directed by Bogart’s close friend John Huston – will be shown Oct. 10 and 17. “Sierra Madre” presented Bogart with one of the greatest roles of his career as a likeable drifter who becomes a paranoid killer obsessed with gold while prospecting in 1920s Mexico. As boozy river rat Charlie Allnut chugging down river with prim missionary Katharine Hepburn, Bogart won his Best Actor Oscar. Handsomely restored, the Technicolor film was mostly shot on location in the Belgian Congo. “Casablanca,” everyone’s favorite movie love story, will screen on Oct. 24. Bogart is Rick Blaine, a cynical American running a café in wartime North Africa, who encounters Ilsa, a past love played by Ingrid Bergman, and is forced to choose between love and duty. This Oscar-winning Best Picture ranks No. 3 on the American Film Institute list of the best American films ever made. Classic Warner Brothers cartoons satirizing Bogart and his classic roles will be on each program.

This unique build provided participants a tangible, uplifting, and–above all–hopeful way to process their grief. Working alongside others who had experienced the death of a loved one offered an innovative and active way for participants to channel their grief. At the same time, a concrete, meaningful, and enduring treasure was created–a symbol of hope and a home for a family. Fall Golf Croquet Tournament Monday, October 13 – Wednesday, October 15 Rain date Thursday, October 16 Monday & Tuesday – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Teams/individuals play single elimination matches. See pairings sheet for times. Wednesday – 2:00 – 5:00 pm – Semi-final and final matches The Arbor Acres Croquet Club celebrates a most successful season with the second annual Golf Croquet Tournament, and all resident players are invited to enter the single and doubles competition. Non-players are invited to observe all matches, and to enjoy refreshments during the semi-final and final matches on Wednesday.

For those who’d rather cheer on the players, come out at any time, but don’t miss the semi-finals and finals on Wednesday afternoon. The rain date for semi-finals and the championship matches is on Thursday, October 16. Questions? Call Charles Duckett (722-2295) or Chan and Winborne Chandler (725-8208).

The matches will include singles and doubles golf croquet for both men and women. Doubles players will choose their partners and sign up by calling the Concierge, Annie, at ext. 1210 by Tuesday, October 7. Pairings with assigned times for play will be posted on Thursday, October 9. All players should have some experience and be familiar with the golf croquet game and rules of play. Times for play will be assigned, but players may exchange with other players who mutually agree. Players who exchange time-of-play are responsible for correcting the pairings board at the Croquet Shed immediately. The match may have to be forfeited by not showing up at the assigned time. Competition is meant to be fun and relaxing, but it is very important for everyone to help us keep it running smoothly. 15
